- "We fight for a cause, but what we're really fighting for is each other. That's why our pilots fly into fire instead of abandoning a wingman and our commandos stand their ground rather than leave a flank unguarded. It's because they care for each other. We fight for duty, yes. But we also fight because we love each other. And that's something even more powerful."

The Alliance Military, formally identified as the Alliance Armed Forces or as the Rebel Alliance Military, and more informally addressed as the Rebel military and Alliance military forces, comprised the military forces of the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Imperial Era and the Galactic Civil War. The Alliance Military had a number of principal branches to achieve its goals and objectives. It was divided into the Alliance Army, Sector Command and the Sector Forces, the Rebel Alliance Navy and its Rebel Alliance Starfighter Corps, the Rebel Alliance Intelligence Service, the Rebel Alliance Special Forces, Ordnance and Supply, and Support Services. There were many other departments of the military, including the Rebel Alliance Corps of Engineers, Alliance Military Research and Development, and others.
Senator Mon Mothma, who served as the Alliance Chancellor, served in the capacity of Commander-in-Chief of the Alliance Military in addition to her role as Alliance Chief of State. The civilian branch of the Alliance to Restore the Republic, the Alliance Civil Government, maintained multiple ministers who contributed to the capabilities and responsibilities of the Alliance Military, including the Minister of War, the Minister of Finance, the Minister of Industry, the Minister of Education, and the Minister of State. The Supreme Commander of the Alliance Armed Forces also held command of the military, with the Alliance High Command serving as the principle authority by which the Alliance Military operated.
The Alliance Military operated in the nascent rebel network known as "the Alliance" prior to being formalized in the Declaration of the Rebel Alliance, which officially declared the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The Alliance Military served as the principal adversary in the Galactic Civil War against the Galactic Empire, including emerging victorious at the pivotal Battle of Scarif and the Battle of Yavin. These Alliance victories paved the way for the Assault on Cymoon and various Alliance operations, including the Mid Rim Offensive. These operations in the Mid Rim Territories of the galaxy were eventually thwarted by the Empire, and with the loss of a large portion of the Alliance Navy during the Battle of Mako-Ta, the Rebel Alliance was in retreat. The Battle of Hoth further splintered the faction, although several rebel campaigns allowed for a strike on the Empire at the Battle of Endor.
The defeat of the Empire on Endor resulted in the death of Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine, his enforcer Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader, and numerous officers of Imperial High Command. In the subsequent moments, the Empire splintered in to various warring factions including the Imperial-Royalist coalition, the Yomo Council, the Chadawan government, multiple remnants like Kenner Loring's faction, Ubrik Adelhard's Imperial remnant, and the loyalist Imperial forces led by Counselor to the Empire Gallius Rax. During this splintering, the Alliance transformed itself into the New Republic, and the Alliance Armed Forces transitioned into the New Republic Defense Force. Eventually, the war ended at the Battle of Jakku and the signing of the Galactic Concordance.
Description
Role and function
The Alliance Military,[1] formally titled as the Alliance Armed Forces[2] or as the Rebel Alliance Military,[17] and informally referred to as the Rebel military,[18] and Alliance military forces,[19] was the military arm of the Alliance to Restore the Republic and its Alliance Civil Government.[1]
Administration, command, and control
Overview of High Command
Alliance Chief of State Mon Mothma acted as the military's Commander-in-Chief.
The Alliance Military was overseen by the Alliance High Command, which was a military and civilian leadership council of the Rebel Alliance's command staff. Consisting of both military commanders and ministers from the Alliance Cabinet, the Alliance High Command made the most important decisions for the military and the Alliance to Restore the Republic as a whole. The Rebel Alliance High Command was led by Senator Mon Mothma, who governed the Alliance Civil Government as Chief of State and commanded the Alliance Military as the Commander-in-Chief.[1]
Additionally, the Supreme Commander of the Alliance Armed Forces was part of the command hierarchy.[2] The civilian component of Alliance High Command was composed of the Secretary of the Cabinet, the Minister of War, the Minister of Supply, the Minister of Industry, the Minister of State, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Education.[7] Shortly prior to the Battle of Scarif, the Ministers of Finance, Industry, and Education were respectively Senator Nower Jebel of Uyter, Senator Vasp Vaspar of the Taldot sector, and Senator Tynnra Pamlo of Taris.[1] Other types of ministers were used by the Alliance for anti-Imperial speeches and could also serve in a combat capacity, and were eligible to be transferred military ranks such as captain.[20]
The military portion of the Alliance High Command consisted of the commanders of Rebel Alliance Starfighter Command, Ordnance and Supply, Support Services, Rebel Alliance Special Forces, Rebel Alliance Intelligence Service, Rebel Fleet Command, and Sector Command.[7] By the time shortly prior to the Battle of Scarif, the commanders of these units were General Antoc Merrick, General Baccam Grafis, General Dustil Forell, General Pitt Onoran, Chief of Intelligence General Airen Cracken, Admiral Raddus, and General Jan Dodonna.[7] While the military bloc of Alliance High Command consisted of the overall branch commanders, many Alliance officers were also part of the High Command. General Davits Draven of Intelligence represented General Cracken in the High Council when absent,[1] and Colonel Haxen Delto and Major Capin Harinar, who oversaw the Alliance Intelligence communications and technology efforts respectively, were also members.[21]

Another High Command member was Colonel Bandwin Cor, who oversaw the daily operations of Alliance Starfighter Command,[1] and was promoted to general after Merrick's death.[21] After the death of Admiral Raddus, Admiral Gial Ackbar became the leader of the naval branch of the Alliance[22] and eventually achieved the position of supreme fleet commander.[23] Other officers who were not the leaders of command branches and were members of the Alliance High Command included General Bob Hudsol, General Leia Organa, General Vanden Huyck Willard, General Hera Syndulla, Commander Lajaie, Captain Garazeb Orrelios, and others.[21]
Officer Corps
Alliance officers originated from a variety of human, near-human, and alien cultures from across the galaxy. Officers who joined the Alliance Military usually brought with them generations of their native military culture and heritage. While some Rebel officers worked effectively from their command theater of a starship or the command and control center of an Alliance base, others led their troops personally. While the Galactic Empire believed that the best officers originate from the upper class of human society, the Rebel Alliance drew its leaders from an abundant variety of people in the galaxy. Significant contributions to the Alliance Military's efforts came from individuals from a spectrum of class, species, gender, language, and other categories. The Alliance believed that a good leader could come from anywhere.[2]
Although not all promising officer candidates were destined to lead fleets of the Alliance or command thousands of ground troops, the Alliance believed that a strong capacity for leadership was necessary at every level of operation, including small specialist squads to larger security detachments, to units assigned to support roles. New recruits were monitored by their superiors for the qualities to take on leadership positions.[2]
Droids were used as military advisers, due in part to their quick, analytical droid brains and ample databanks which could store the entirety of galactic military history. Initially serving in the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars, very few T-series military strategic analysis and tactics droids remained in service during the Imperial Era. These T-series tactical droids served in the rebel officer corps within the Alliance Military, as they could perform as competent military advisers.[2]
Leaders of individual Rebel cells are similar in many ways to Alliance commanders, although they have fewer resources, fewer personnel, and, some might argue, take vastly greater risks. These people operate inside enemy lines, attempting to undermine the Empire's interests anf foment dissent against its rule. The environments in which these cells operate are spectacularly hostile toward any form of rebellion, and capture almost invariably results in death. Typically, the acts of a Rebel cell involve espionage and sabotage. It is necessary for Rebel cells to maintain a low profile in order to avoid drawing too much scrutiny to themselves; bringing the attention of the imperials down upon the local populace is a good way to alienate potential recruits and tarnish the reputation of the Alliance as a whole. Rebel cell leaders often have blind connections to other Rebel cells, making it possible to pass information between cells, but protecting individual identities should one cell be compromised. Cell networks vary greatly in size and scope. Cell leaders must operate with faith in the accuracy and validity of the information and orders they receive. They must also react immediately when their cell is threatened and protect the integrity of the network at all costs. [sic] a Rebel cell leader could command their efforts against the Empire. The cell leader can provide missions and intelligence briefings passed along from someone higher up the chain. The cell leader and cell members together determine the best way to carry out individual missions and local logistics.[19] (Rewrite)
Echo Base High Command
Originally, the rebel cells that amassed in the Great Temple on Yavin 4 combined to form the core of Alliance High Command,[1] while previously, a central command headquarters on Dantooine served as a meeting point for high-level discussions.[7] Following the retreat from Yavin, Alliance High Command moved to various locations and were often located within Alliance fleets.[24] Eventually, a portion of the Alliance Military was headquartered on the ice planet Hoth at the constructed Echo Base. The resulting command unit was Echo Base High Command, which consisted of General Carlist Rieekan and General Leia Organa. They were supported by a cadre of officers, including several generals,[14] General Pharl McQuarrie[25] who served as second-in-command,[26] Colonel[27] Ledick Firest, Major Bren Derlin,[14] Captain K-3PO,[28] Lieutenant Cal Alder,[29] and others.[14]
Branches
Alliance Army
Of all of the Alliance Military's armed branches, the Alliance Army was considered to have the slimmest prospects. The Army was expected by Alliance High Command to launch critical raids and defend Alliance military installations against the near-limitless resources of the Imperial Army. Rebel soldiers assigned to defend bases usually spent more of their time fortifying the facility and conducting evacuation drills. When a rebel cell established its headquarters, its members spent days or weeks on creating evacuation protocols if they were discovered. In such an instance, it was the members of the Alliance Army who confronted Imperial forces to stall and create time for other rebels to escape. Army personnel were usually the last to evacuate, and as a result, usually had the highest fatalities.[30]

Army soldiers also organized and launched guerilla strikes that were based on the Alliance starfighter's hit-and-fade strategies. Elite units targeted vulnerable Imperial supply depots, military installations, and starships for daring raids, acts of sabotage, and operations of asset denial. Unlike the Alliance's starfighters, rebel soldiers could not evacuate quickly, and these operations resulted in high casualties. In the army, any individual who only had a blaster and the feeling of hope had the distinction of being referred to as a rebel soldier.[30]
The Alliance Military was considered large,[31] as the Alliance Army utilized armies[30] and by the time of the Mid Rim Offensive, hundreds of battle groups comprised the military.[31] These battle groups included the Twenty-First, the Thirty-Second Infantry, Sixty-Eighth Infantry "Fisheye Company," Bitter Pill Company, and the 61st Mobile Infantry Company. The 61st was headquartered on a rebel corvette that was escorted by a gunboat, and conducted strikes throughout multiple locations.[31] Companies could also be stationed as base security, such as the company that provided security for the Rebel Refueling Base on Vrogas Vas.[32] Other units included second platoon and its Delta Squad,[33] as well as the Ground Defense Command and its own Squad Seven.[34] The Alliance Army additionally employed battalions, with one such battalion serving as reinforcements for the forces on Vrogas Vas.[32] Maintenance battalions were part of the Alliance's structure, and contained scores of mechanics.[6]

Alliance Starfighter Corps
The Rebel Alliance Starfighter Corps was the starfighter branch of the Alliance Armed Forces and was a key asset
The Rebel Alliance's starfighter corps was one of its greatest assets. There were nearly as many stories as there were pilots: Rebel starfighters were flown by Imperial defectors, reformed mercenaries, adventure-seeking farmboys, and daredevils who only truly felt alive in a cockpit. Regardless of their backgrounds, Rebel pilots learned to work together, relying on their wingmen as well as their training in countless battles against the Empire. (Rebel Pilots databank)

Alliance Intelligence Service
Predating the official creation of the Alliance,[46] the Rebel Alliance Intelligence Service was the intelligence-gathering arm of the Alliance Military.[1] Headed by the Chief of Intelligence,[16] the Alliance Intelligence waged their war against the Empire with indirect methods such as sabotage, infiltration, and assassination.[47]
The Rebel Alliance Intelligence Service collaborated closely with the Alliance Minister of Education who received reports on Imperial atrocities[1] and worked with the Chief of Rebel Intelligence to release counter-propaganda to gain sympathy from resistance groups.[7] The service maintained spy networks throughout the Outer Rim Territories[1] and had several subdivisions such as Alliance Intelligence Operations[19] and Retrieval.[1] A number of special forces teams fell under the auspices of the intelligence service, including Strike Team Misericorde and the Andor team.[48] The Rebel SpecForces unit Extraction Team Bravo answered to intelligence.[49]
Alliance Intelligence utilized agents with the title of Fulcrum in various aspects. Fulcrum agents gathered and distributed intelligence to various cells,[50] recruited new members to the Alliance cause within a sector,[1] investigated Imperial activity, dispatched subordinates on missions, directed Rebel forces as commanders, and served as overseers of certain Alliance cells.[51]
Alliance Sector Forces and resistance groups
The Sector Force was one of the principal Alliance Military formations. It was created when larger resistance groups that were successfully integrated into the Alliance were regularly combined with other regional forces. Some Sector Forces were established from outside of the Alliance, though it was uncommon. Usually, a Sector Force was built around one of the larger resistance operations in the sector. Sector Forces were much closer to regular military assets, containing a command structure and a political hierarchy. They had a number of bases to defend and contained thousands of personnel, though they were usually spread thin across the sector. Mission types varied on the local capabilities of resistance forces and the targets. Under a Sector Force, these were more commonly better planned and contained more accurate intelligence about the targets. Personnel of a Sector Force were also more likely to be trained for their particular role, with Sector Force soldiers having a common military experience, barracks, assigned duties, regular trained military units, and an overarching command structure.[30] Bob Hudsol and Vanden Huyck Willard served as sector commanders.[52]
Rebels operated in the Imperial Capital, Coruscant.
Sector Forces transferred individuals between local units in order to have mission-appropriate personnel where it was needed. As a result, some units and personnel operated in other sectors at times. Local resistance cells were the most basic form of assignment, and usually began as localized and unaffiliated operations composed of a variety of individuals who fought the Empire. Soldiers were usually recruited locally rather than assigned to such resistance groups from elsewhere. Command structures of rebel cells were very flexible and were ad hoc in nature. When a group joined the Rebel Alliance, outside personnel were assigned to increase its operations and defenses. Specific mission types at an exact location varied on the group's area of operation, local targets, and personnel abilities. For soldiers stationed with a rebel group, there were always locations to be guarded at a minimum. Sabotage missions were the most common, and soldiers usually provided additional firepower rather than attacking targets directly. Despite this, the Alliance Military at times required high profile attacks, which usually required soldiers to be at the vanguard of the attacks.[30]
There were many examples of regional sector units and local resistance groups, especially at the time of the nascent Alliance. The Atrivis Resistance Group was a major sector-wide resistance force in the Atrivis sector under the command of Travia Chan. After the defeat of the local Liberators on the Atrivis sector planet Mantooine, the ARG decided to join the Alliance rebel network, before the official declaration of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. The ARG successfully integrated into the Alliance Military structure.[7] In the Colonies region of the galaxy, the Commenor Underground was allied with the Rebel Alliance while active on the planet Commenor.[53] A rebel cell on the Imperial Capital of Coruscant was active, and led by Quartermaster Ko-Tun Feralo.[54]
The Tynnan intelligence-gathering Deep Current was active in the early years of rebellion, and the Alliance believed that if they offered the data, they would be able to provide protection for the resistance group.[7] A resistance force on Duro was active, and the Alliance dispatched agents to help activate the cell and organize its operations.[55] Due to Imperial subjugation, a resistance movement began on Elom, with the Elom and Elomin coordinating with Rebel Alliance military assets to undermine Imperial operations.[30] Volunteers from Polyneus left their world to serve in the Alliance, and were dubbed as the Hundred and Twenty.[42] Rebel sympathizers on Kyuzo recruited like-minded individuals into the Rebel Alliance in hopes of strengthening the Alliance at large, while also establishing a resistance force on their planet.[30] The Virgillian Free Alignment was one of the earliest allies of the Rebel Alliance, and operated in the Virgillia system.[56]
The Phoenix Cell was an Alliance sector fleet that operated in the Lothal sector. It eventually inducted the Spectres, a group of rebels that were active on the planet Lothal.[7] Following operations by the Spectres, the Lothal resistance group was established on the Outer Rim world under the command of the former Imperial Governor Ryder Azadi. The group conducted various operations against Imperial forces.[57] These groups were inducted into the Rebel Alliance when it was officially established,[58] though the assets of Phoenix Cell were absorbed into the Massassi Group following the cell's destruction.[59] The Massassi Group was the core of Alliance High Command and was composed of many rebel cells.[1] Massassi Group accumulated from several splintered Alliance units into a solid command structure, which was more organized than was the norm in the Alliance in the past. Massassi Unit's personnel were organized by a historic Alderaanian military model, with the standard ranks and service divisions aggregated from several splintered units into a command structure, the leadership of the Massassi Base was more organized than the rebellion was a few years earlier. Despite this, Massassi Group was flexible enough to adapt and evacuate.[52] A rebel network was active on Ibaar and was supported by early Alliance units including Phoenix Cell.[60]
The Partisans were an extremist militant group led by Saw Gerrera since the start of the Imperial Era. They were initially allied with the Salient Battle Group before eventually conducting their own independent operations. Eventually, they were allied with the Rebel Alliance, but the pact fragmented due to the Partisans' harsh and brutal tactics.[1] The Partisans split into various sub-cells following Gerrera's death such as the Dreamers[61] before one remnant on Jedha briefly realigned itself with the Alliance.[62] The Mon Cal and the Mon Calamari Exodus Fleet were Mon Calamari resistance forces that escaped the subjugation of Mon Cala. The Exodus Fleet was inducted into the Alliance Military as the basis for its naval branch.[7] During the Galactic Civil War, a resistance was formed on Coyerti and were allied with the Rebel Alliance.[31] Various Mid Rim revolutionaries that aligned with the Rebel Alliance were active during the war, including the Saurin resistance.[7]
The Alliance's Talz resistance fighters launch an attack
Other resistance groups during the war included the Sullustan resistance, active on the Outer Rim world of Sullust and led by Nien Nunb.[31] A resistance force of local Talz was active on Orto Plutonia and led by an Alliance officer,[30] as was a major Rebel Alliance cell on the planet Tatooine which conducted major operations in the surrounding area.[63] A rebel network of multiple cells was active on Trivar II and supported by the Alliance,[55] as well as a rebel group in the Truwel system and allied with the Alliance Military.[6] A rebel cell operated in Imperial space but was eventually destroyed.[64] The Uprising consisted of various organizations that were blockaded in the Anoat sector, and fought on behalf of the Alliance.[65]

Alliance Special Forces
The special forces branch of the Alliance Military was the Rebel Alliance Special Forces, or Alliance SpecForce for short. The best Alliance personnel served in the SpecForces, and their mission types reflected their prestige. SpecForce soldiers,[30] known as Rebel Commandos,[63] guarded the Alliance High Command and its bases of operations, wherever they were at a given time. High-value leaders usually warranted a SpecForce guard, especially if they participated in military operations and missions. SpecForces were expected to conduct high-risk, high-profile missions without direct supervision or contact with their commanders. Being a member of the SpecForces was considered to be both a great honor and extremely dangerous.[30]
The SpecForces were divided into multiple units such as divisions, regiments,[1] companies,[2] platoons, squads and other groups. The Yavin 4 Special Forces division was composed of the entirety of SpecForce personnel at Yavin 4, and was led by General Pitt Onoran. The 4th SpecForce Regiment was also active at Yavin.[1] The 32nd Commando Unit was another unit within the SpecForces, as was the Stardust unit and the Vapetailers unit.[7] The SpecForces was also composed of the Marine Corps, of which there were multiple members and units of. One such unit was Extraction Team Bravo[48] and a platoon led by Captain Ette Shi'lou. Rebel Marines could be organized into battalions, companies, and platoons.[2] The Special Forces Trackers Unit, more commonly known as the SpecForce Pathfinders or as the Alliance Pathfinders, were a specialized SpecForce unit[48] who used guerilla tactics to infiltrate target areas.[7] One platoon of the Pathfinders was led by Lieutenant Taidu Sefla and contained four squads.[48]
Alliance operatives infiltrate the Imperial headquarters on Coruscant.
Cracken's Crew, named after the head of the Alliance Intelligence Service, was an elite group of Rebel Commandos that specialized in surgical raiding operations, and were considered among the best of the Alliance's heroes.[30] Another group was the Endor strike team, which was made up of various commandos from different units and, at its core, the Heroes of Yavin.[7] The Heroes of Yavin was the term given to the group of Alliance heroes, Han Solo, Princess Leia Organa, the Jedi Luke Skywalker, the Wookiee Chewbacca, and the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, which had participated in many pivotal campaigns and missions for the Alliance.[66] Renegade Squadron was a special forces squadron that launched missions for the Alliance.[67]
Rogue One was the name of a group of rogue rebel soldiers who disobeyed Alliance High Command orders and decided to infiltrated the Imperial Center of Military Research on Scarif in an attempt to steal the Death Star plans. It was composed of various commandos from a range of units.[1] Rebel Alliance SpecForces included mechanics and technical specialists to maintain and repair starships. Some members of the SpecForces served in Procurement and Supply divisions.[8] SpecForce infiltrators were members of the Alliance Special Forces and deployed in stealth environments with disguises.[19] Rebel elite commandos served in the Alliance Armed Forces, and could be organized into platoons.[2] Personnel could further be divided along several specializations, including Urban Guerrillas, Heavy Weapons Specialists, Technicians, and Wilderness Fighters.[7]
Alliance Special Operations
The most unusual and diverse mission units in the Rebel Alliance were the Special Operations groups,[30] designated as the Rebel Alliance SpecOps.[10] These special forces units were composed of individuals who were greatly skilled but did not otherwise fit into a military hierarchy due to social eccentricities or attitudes. They often served the Rebel Alliance in a near-freelance capacity, and received unusual missions or pursued their own efforts with even greater autonomy than the common Alliance operative.[30] Like SpecForces, SpecOps also used infiltrators in special missions.[10]
Rebel Alliance Special Forces conducted stealth operations.
Soldiers in unusual circumstances, or who had atypical skill sets, could be assigned to a SpecOps unit. Soldiers were also likely in receiving temporary assignment to a SpecOps group in order to reinforce the unit's combat abilities or to protect them in uncommon circumstances. Special Operations groups were infamous for ignoring formal military ranks except when extremely necessary, which irritated soldiers that had adapted to military discipline.[30]
Other branches and departments
In addition to the combat and intelligence branches, there were also support and logistic branches for the Alliance Military. Ordnance and Supply (O&S) was one such branch of the Alliance Armed Forces. Led by General Baccam Grafis, O&S oversaw the procurement of essential material that was vital to the Alliance. The branch sought new lines of supply for starship-grade fuel and weaponry. Another was the Support Services branch, which was responsible for the Alliance's transportation network. The branch was overseen by General Dustil Forell and included less than twelve GR-75 medium transports and a light freighter while the High Command was stationed on Yavin 4.[1]
In addition to the principal branches of the Alliance Armed Forces, the military was also composed of other departments. One such department was Alliance Military Research and Development, which focused on scientific research and operations.[10] Project Shantipole, a starfighter research initiative, was also part of the Alliance Military's structure.[51] Procurement and Supply was an Alliance Military department that consisted of multiple divisions and whose objective was to retrieve ordnance, supplies, fuel, and other materials from Imperial-occupied worlds.[8]
The Rebel Alliance Corps of Engineers specialized in engineering and construction, and was responsible for building Alliance military installations and structures.[5] The Logistics and Supply Corps was responsible for ensuring that Alliance personnel received the necessary combat gear to participate in a battle.[30] Signals Intelligence was an intelligence organization within the Alliance's military arm. Its technicians gathered secret information from Imperial electronic signals such as encrypted communications chatter,[1] and reported it to base commanders.[49] The group made use of the military rank of private.[1]
Industry and logistics
A small electronics venture that was founded in the last decade of the Clone Wars based in the Corporate Sector, CryonCorp specialized in high-resolution sensor systems for multiple uses, including for personal, commercial, and industrial operations. CryonCorp was staunchly anti-Imperial, and its board of directors dedicated itself to providing the Rebel Alliance with high-quality and low-cost sensor equipment during the war.[2]
Slayn & Korpil was a starfighter manufacturer that was sympathetic to the Rebel cause shortly prior to the formal declaration of the Rebel Alliance[60] and continued to manufacture starfighters for the Alliance Military.[68] Following the Imperial takeover of Baktoid Combat Automata, the Alliance granted asylum to many of its employees, with executives and leading engineers forming Baktoid Industrial Systems. The new company was rumored to have donated its products to the Rebel Alliance as appreciation.[30]
A number of SoroSuub Corporation engineers that were sympathetic to the Rebel Alliance produced airspeeders for them in small batches.[2] Eventually SoroSuub switched allegiances and joined the Rebel Alliance.[69] The Underground Engineers was a network of engineers that were allied with the Rebel Alliance and created their RZ-1 A-wing interceptors by reworking a batch of R-22 Spearheads.[70]
Governments and politicians
The Alliance to Restore the Republic was supported by various planetary,[71] star system,[6] and sector governments.[51] The Royal House of Alderaan, albeit an active member of the Galactic Empire, secretly supported a resistance movement led by Viceroy and Alderaanian Senator Bail Prestor Organa. The movement by the Alderaanian royal was secretly assisted by the security forces of Aldera, Alderaan's capital. The Alderaan military was also involved,[51] as was the Royal Alderaan Civil Fleet. The Alderaanian civil fleet often sent out starships to rebel cells to supply them.[72] The Alderaan military's traditions, uniforms and structures made its way into the Rebel Alliance.[51] Calima Squadron undertook missions to sabotage Imperial outposts.[73] Following Alderaan's destruction, remnants of Alderaan's armed forces such as the Alderaanian consular security were absorbed into the Alliance Military.[9]
The Bright Tree tribe was the Ewok tribe of the Bright Tree Village on the Forest Moon of Endor. During the Galactic Civil War, the Bright Tree tribe joined the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the Battle of Endor, when its Ewok warriors bolstered Alliance Special Forces in destroying the Death Star's shield generator.[9] After King Amand and his people on Molos rose against Imperial occupation, an army made up of a civilian militia and the king's palace guard was created with the assistance of Alliance Army personnel.[2]
Subjugated early during the Imperial Era, the monarchy of Mon Cala was overseen by Regent Dors Urtya. Following the mutiny on Mon Cala by the Mon Cala Mercantile Fleet, the Mon Calamari officially joined the Alliance to Restore the Republic, providing many starships of the Alliance Navy.[74] The Royal House of Naboo joined the Rebel Alliance following the Imperial defeat at Endor. Joint forces fought in the Battle of Theed against the Empire, emerging victorious.[75] The government of Tibrin and its fleet joined the Rebel Alliance following a mission by Alliance members.[71] The government of the Truwel system and its subordinate planetary government were aligned with the Empire, but secretly supported the Rebel Alliance.[6] Following the dissolution of the Imperial Senate, a rare few Imperial senators sought to aid the Rebel Alliance.[19]
Doctrine and operations
Strategic doctrine and philosophy
As a result of facing the most extensive military organization created, the Alliance was forced to operate in the shadows, working with small groups to achieve minor objectives with the hope of creating a larger and more impactful victory in the future. As a result, the Alliance Military had to ally itself with criminals, and although most Rebels didn't have issues working with such characters, some within Alliance leadership objected to such connections.[19]

The greatest difficulty facing the Rebellion is its lack of resources. What resources it does possess are carefully measured and dispensed with absolute scrutiny for their purpose and intent. Some, even some among the Alliance's ranks, look at the fleets of ships and the hidden bases that the organization commands and wonder why even minor resources like blaster packs are so rigidly controlled, but the Rebellion can survive no other way. Quartermasters, like their more formal military counterparts, are tasked with managing the Alliance's meager resources and ensuring there is never a shortage of any essential commodity. Quartermasters are, by necessity, extremely strict and somewhat brusque, dealing with a never-ending stream of requests by frustrated personnel, all of whome believe that their request is, of course, completely valid and of the utmost important. As a result, quartermasters are seldom popular among their fellow Alliance personnel. Every Rebel base and starship has some form of quartermaster. Major logistics bases might have entire squads of them overseeing large amounts of material. Typically [sic] making requests for equipment do so through their commanding officer, but they might also try to work a back channel with the quartermaster to get more or better supplies. Propaganda
Propaganda pieces such as Fly For Freedom prominently featured the Alliance Military.
While other groups within the Rebel Alliance were charged with the dissemination of propaganda, including the Minister of Education[1] and the civil government's Propaganda Bureau,[76] the Alliance Military also played a role. The Minister of Education coordinated counter-propaganda activities with the military's Rebel Alliance Intelligence Service[7] and imagery of Alliance armed forces was utilized by Rebel propaganda. Military vehicles were used on pieces such as the Stay on Target and Fly For Freedom posters, while other pieces such as Join the Tide of Victory! featured Alliance Army personnel.[76] Military equipment, such as the colorful flight suits worn by rebel pilots, became synonymous with the idea of freedom and the rebel cause.[77]
Personnel
Overview
During the Galactic Civil War, the Rebel Alliance needed to create and maintain its own armies to expand to new territory and protect its small, yet vital, military bases and locations sympathetic to the Alliance. Despite being outnumbered greatly and usually outgunned by the Imperial Armed Forces in nearly every category, rebels knew that every small victory advanced their cause and inspired new allies to join the Rebel Alliance. The Rebellion believed that although the odds were against them, bravely battling those odds were just another struggle to overcome. The Rebel Alliance deployed its soldiers into different operations and tasks that were outside of their units or expertise as the Alliance was short on resources and in need of equipment, ordnance, and personnel.[30]
Honors
An Alliance officer presents a medal to a rebel-allied family.
The Alliance Military had a wide range of honors and awards bestowed for varying kinds of military service and gallantry. The highest such decoration in the Alliance Armed Forces was the Kalidor Crescent. The Kalidor Crescent could only be awarded by either the Alliance Chief of State or the Supreme Commander of the Allianced Armed Forces. The recipient could only be nominated after an extreme act of heroism and gallantry against an overwhelming force, and only by a superior officer or civilian government representative. The Kalidor Crescent had five embellishments. The first was the Bronze Cluster, followed by the Silver Talons as the second, the Silver Scimitar the third, the Golden Wings as the fourth, and Diamond Eyes as the final embellishment.[2]
The second highest honor was the Corellian Cross, which could only be awarded once by Alliance High Command. A prerequisite for the Corellian Cross was an individual must have distinguished themselves in action or in allied operations by taking extremely heroic actions at the risk of life, which was sufficient enough to set them apart from their comrades. The third highest honor was the Illudium Star, which was awarded to those who displayed actions above and beyond their call of duty. Other requirements were that if a pilot was nominated, they must have achieved ace status. Any crew member who served alongside any pilot nominated for the Illudium Star were also eligible to receive it. The fourth highest honor was the Mantooine Medallion, requiring those bestowed with it to have displayed exceptional bravery and service. It was usually bestowed upon supply officers, intelligence agents, and others who ensured the Alliance's readiness. It was also provided to members of the Mantooine resistance. The fifth highest honor was the Star of Alderaan, awarded to those who demonstrated courage during combat.[2] Other honors included the Bronze Nova for Conspicuous Gallantry that could be awarded to pilots for their actions,[78] as well as the Medal of Bravery, a high honor bestowed upon members of the Heroes of Yavin.[9]
Each military specialization had its own badge for honoring its personnel, with one example being a badge for artillery operators. Aviator's wings were awarded to certain pilots, while the infantryman's badge was bestowed upon Alliance soldiers who completed their first combat mission. Despite this, the infantryman's badge was usually given to those who bled for the Alliance, and was worn by junior and senior officers. Starship technicians had their own badge as well, like all other military specialties. The Redbird was given to those who were wounded in battle.[2] The Distinguished Flying Medal was given to combat and civilian pilots who demonstrated heroism, gallantry, and prowess while operating a starship or airspeeder in support of combat operations. It was not only provided for military pilots, but also rebel smugglers and pilots who ran blockades. The army equivilant was the Distinguished Service Medal, issued to combat and non-combat military members and civilians who provided aid and material support to the Alliance and relayed acts of exceptionalism and heroism.[2]
Luke Skywalker and Han Solo receive the Medal of Bravery following the Battle of Yavin.
Supplementing military specialty badges, honors were also provided for an individual's role in a specific battle or campaign. For Alliance Military personnel who participated in the Battle of Yavin, the Defense of Yavin medal was provided. For starfighter pilots who participated in the engagement, they were also provided with the Death Star medal. The Defense of Hoth medal was given as an honor to all military members who were stationed on Echo Base and fought in the Battle of Hoth. Continuing this, the Battle of Endor campaign ribbon was given to Alliance army and naval personnel who fought in the Battle of Endor, and pilots could supplement it with the Death Star II medal for those who fought in the naval engagement above Endor.[2]
Military culture
The cause
- "We are a volunteer militia, which means the majority of our fighters do not consider themselves military. They fight for a cause, not a flag."
- ―Chancellor Mothma
Alliance soldiers were aware that they were fighting against an overwhelming enemy, yet were dedicated to bringing down the Empire.
The individuals who joined the Rebel Alliance were aware of fighting against an overwhelming adversary, and were usually uninterested in pursuing promotions or political power, but rather seeking to change the galaxy. The soldiers of the Alliance were aware that they were heavily outnumbered, and that while they had the advantage in smaller conflicts or specific missions, the vast Imperial Military may ambush them at any moment. They understood that they had few secretive allies, but even fewer public ones. Despite the challenges and great personal risk, Alliance soldiers were commonly dedicated to tearing down the forces of the Empire and its leader. They usually believed that their faction was more agile and flexible in engagements, and that they were more personally motivated in becoming victorious against the Empire.[30]
Although not necessarily correct at all times, rebel soldiers were more autonomous than average Imperial troopers. This enabled the rebels to perform in more unusual ways that were not afforded to Imperial combatants, and keeping the Empire off-balance was key to the Rebel Alliance's survival.[30] Although similar in terms of equipment and roles as the Galactic Empire, what separated the members of the Alliance Military was their motivation. Alliance soldiers, whether in a military installation or in a starship, believed that they were not fighting for themselves (continue expanding)[19]
Although a military force, most members of the Alliance Military did not consider themselves as such, rather describing themselves as a volunteer militia.[79]
The Force
The Force was the field of energy that bound the galaxy together, connecting life forms together.[80] The Force was central of the Jedi, of which several had joined the Alliance military's efforts against the Empire.[81] The phrase, "may the Force be with you" was thus not only used by the Jedi who fought for the Alliance,[14] but also became adopted by non-Jedi rebel members themselves.[15]
Military justice
- "Both may call witnesses, cross-examine and otherwise operate in accordance with the procedures outlined in the Corellian code of military justice. Once each side has presented its case, we will deliberate and offer a ruling and then a sentence."
- ―Admiral Ackbar describes the procedures of a trial
Alliance High Command conducts a military tribunal.
The Alliance Military followed the Corellian code of military justice, which established the governance of a military tribunal, including its formation, procedure, and its composition. The tribunal had the authority to prosecute an Alliance Military officer of crimes including treason, mutiny, and insubordination. Such capital offenses were eligible for the death penalty.[79] A trial that followed the code required three Magistrates, as well as a advocates for the defense and for the prosecutor.[82]
Both groups had the ability to call, cross-examine, and question witnesses on various issues related to the tribunal's trial. After each side presented its case, the three Magistrates then deliberated and offered a ruling and sentence. The procedure of a trial began with the prosecution presenting its arguments, followed by the defense, and ending with closing arguments from both groups. Only the advocates were able to sidebar with the Magistrates, and paralegals were also involved.[82] Furthermore, a mistrial could be declared if one of the three Magistrates were incapacitated to the point that proceedings could not be concluded within a necessary quorum. Trials under the code concluded at the sentencing.[83]
Ranks
The Alliance Army utilized a variety of ranks within its structure. Such ranks included that of general, which could lead entire Alliance rebel cell groups.[9] Subordinate to that was the rank of colonel,[34] followed by major[5] and commander.[31] Lower ranking army officer ranks included captain[84] and lieutenant.[31] Junior ranks including master sergeant,[55] and sergeant major.[5] First sergeants acted as the link between more senior officers and their troops,[31] while logistics sergeants were responsible for directing the flow of supplies and materials,[2] and standard sergeants were used as well.[31] The rank of corporal and private were also used.[1]
The Alliance Navy consisted of various ranks including that of admiral, who could also be given the position of supreme fleet commander[23]—also known as chief commander of the naval forces of the Alliance[85]—and fleet commander.[52] The Alliance Navy also utilized the rank of commodore, which was below admiral[86] but above the rank of naval commander.[87] Commanders could lead small sector fleets comprised of multiple sub-capital ships[81] and command frigates,[88] carriers,[81] corvettes,[89] and gunships.[31] Captains in the navy could command frigates,[16] as well as corvettes[20] and transports.[90] Below captains, the ranks of lieutenant[1] and ensign were used throughout the naval forces.[91]
In the Rebel Alliance Starfighter Corps, the rank of general could be bestowed to officers,[1] and could serve as the commanding officer of a military installation's entire starfighter force.[92] Generals were above the rank of captain,[93]
and captains could serve as squadron leaders.

Recruitment
Joining the Alliance to Restore the Republic was not a simple task. Rebel installations were secretive and hidden, and their supporters were cautious. Rebel agents, sympathizers, and recruiters operated covertly across the galaxy to prevent attracting the attention of the Empire. Imperial scrutiny usually required leaving precise hints at the correct moments so that an individual could join the Alliance. In other cases, a rebel agent could find a potential recruit before that person had seriously considered enlisting. Other individuals were more direct, as the rebellion consisted of small pockets of resistance fighting across the galaxy, this fragmentation of forces was at its peak at the start of the Galactic Civil War. Any rebel group that succeeded in conflict with the Empire without bringing forth large reprisals or committing their own acts of terror usually attracted Alliance recruiters who sought to bring resistance groups into the fold.[30]
Regardless of the method in which they were recruited, once an individual successfully enlisted in the Alliance, an array of variety of roles were available. Trained fighters were useful within the Alliance Military and in covert operations. Some roles were more highly traditional military posts, while others were less strict and defined and were not built into the military hierarchy and structure.[30] Mercenaries were also employed by the Rebel Alliance.[63]
Training
- "You all need to understand that the White Book—all those procedures and regulations High Command vomits at us—it's cooked up by generals who think they're running a government instead of a rebellion."
- ―A rebel warns his new recruits about the White Book
A Rebel Alliance drill instructor
Rebel army and fleet soldiers were trained for a number of contingencies and arenas, and were assigned to similarly organized military units.[19] They could be trained for a specific type of combat, but the Alliance Military needed its personnel to adapt to rapidly changing assignments and responsibilities. For personnel that weren't expected to be on the front lines of combat, they were still trained with basic weapons and self-defense training. Personnel received training corresponding to their intended assignments and positions. The extent and type of training was usually determined by the availability of qualified instructors and suitable training grounds. It was considered impossible to have consistent training within the Alliance due to a wide variety of locations and circumstances.[30]
Despite the challenges, the Rebel Alliance dedicated itself to training individuals to a very high degree. With fewer soldiers than the Empire, the Alliance depended more on the quality of their troopers and for them to be better prepared and have a higher survival rate than its Imperial adversary. The Alliance also trained its troops to conduct unusual missions against the Empire. With Alliance tactics centering on hit-and-run attacks and highly accurate strikes, rebel training usually focused on these types of missions.[30] Theoretically, all Rebel soldiers were trained the same way, using a field guide known as the White Book. According to the White Book, training was to be divided into three to four phases; the first two were identical for every soldier, while the third had two types, one for ground forces and another for space forces. The fourth phase was used to train special forces.[31] Special forces Pathfinders were trained by formal Imperials.[94]
In reality, only base troops actually underwent a formal training as suggested by the White Book. In some units, training consisted of little more than being shown how to utilize a blaster. Alliance Special Forces training taught a number of skills, including using antique slugthrowers, disarming proximity mines, and rappelling off of ray shields. A number of field officers believed that rebel recruits who read the field guide had wasted their time, as it was written by generals who acted in the sense of running a government instead of a rebellion.[31] Another field manual used by the Alliance was Combat Tactics: Rebel Field Manual, which described guerrilla warfare tactics and provided in-depth descriptions of a variety of stormtrooper variants deployed by the Galactic Empire.[7]
Large-scale training exercises were usually difficult to conduct without receiving the attention of the Galactic Empire, but it was still possible to conduct war games due to the many isolated star systems. Additional hindrances to such training events were limited supplies, travel restrictions, Imperial scrutiny, and the availability of competent transportation. More so, isolated resistance groups usually had higher difficulty in preparing their personnel, or transporting recruits to secret training hubs in the sector or the galaxy at large.[30]
Soldiers, staff, and manpower
Combat specializations
The Alliance Armed Forces had a multitude of disciplines and specializations in terms of combatants.[63] Rebel troopers served as the backbone infantry of the Alliance forces,[67] and as a result had further expert fields for different environments. Rebel troopers that were trained and equipped for arctic climates were designated as Cold-weather Soldiers, and respectively those for arid terrain were known as Desert Soldiers.[63]
Beyond environmental specializations, there were also specialized rebel troopers for different roles. Heavy Soldiers who served as heavy infantry units provided additional firepower via Z-6 rotary blaster cannons in an infantry support role, and were also provided dedicated environment specialists such as Cold-weather Heavy Soldiers and Heavy Desert Soldiers, while Rebel Vanguards specialized in anti-vehicle roles. The Alliance's personnel additionally included troopers with technicalized equipment such as the jetpacks used by the Jetpack Troopers[63] and rocket-jumpers.[41] While Jetpack Troopers were more static aerial units with built-in blasters on their jetpacks,[63] rocket-jumpers used jetpacks to boost over enemy troops and deploy missile launchers.[41] Aerial infantry also had specialized troopers for different environments. These included Arctic Jetpack Troopers, Desert Jetpack Troopers, and Forest Jetpack Troopers.[63] Other troops with specialized equipment included special-weapons flamethrower troopers, who worked to destroy fortifications.[7]
Rebel Marksmen were rebel troopers that served as snipers.[67] Naval security was provided by Fleet Troopers, specialized rebel troopers that were based aboard starships and protected them.[95] Rebel troopers that specialized with deploying mounts in combat were designated as Bantha Riders, who rode Banthas into combat and tore down fortified defenses, and Tauntaun Riders, troopers that used Tauntauns as mounts on Hoth and used them for reconnaissance.[63]
As the Alliance Military was composed of different species, some species were deployed as specialized troopers.[63] Ishi Tib Jetpack Troopers used were Ishi Tib aerial infantry that used jetpacks and personal energy shields along with blaster rifles, while Sullustan Demolition troopers were Sullustan soldiers that specialized in the use of explosives.[96] Sullustans also served in dedicated reconnaissance and sniper units, with these Sullustan Rebel troopers designated as Sullustan Recon Sharpshooters.[63] Sullustans were joined in this specialization by Rodian Sniper units.[96] Wookiee warriors served as brute heavy infantry personnel that were armed with bowcasters, thermal imploders,[41] and Ryyk blades.[97] Due to the biology of their species, Iakaru Warriors were effective in tracking hostile defenses. Named as Bufopel Protectors, these Bufopel soldiers possessed immense strength and were used in close combat.[63]
Elite units and commandos
Elite rebel troopers included Rebel Honor Guardsmen, who were the bodyguards of vital Alliance individuals[98] and Rebel Commandos, the special forces infantry of the Alliance,[63] as well as Rebel elite commandos.[2] Commandos included Alliance marines[99] and Alliance pathfinders.[100] Other special forces commandos included heavy weapons specialists.[7] Other commandos included Drabatan Saboteurs, as well as Ithorian Infiltrators. These infiltrators were equipped with personal shields and blasters.[63] Other infiltrators served in the SpecForce[7] and SpecOps branches.[10] Rebel commandos could be designated as Urban Guerrillas, heavy weapons specialists, technicians, and as Wilderness Fighters.[7]
Criminal forces
While not officially part of the Alliance's Military formal structure, a wide range of irregular combatants and proxy forces–including arms dealers, smugglers, mercenaries,– were part of Alliance Military operations across the galaxy.[19]
The Alliance Military made use[63] of mercenaries, or hired guns,[101] for combat and support operations. Er'Kit mercenaries known as Luggabeast Munitioneers used their luggabeasts as a mobile armory. Human mercenaries known as Orbak Marauders and Elite Orbak Marauders rode orbaks into combat with their blasters as a cavalry unit. Another cavalry mercenary unit were Fathier Riders, who were Tognaths that rode armored Fathiers. Other Tognath mercenaries included Tognath Marksmen, using their ranged weaponry to strike from a distance. Heavy mercenary infantry units included Gigoran Fighters that were armed with heavy repeating blasters, mercenaries identified as Dowutin Hunters utilized modified starfighter cannons, and Twi'lek Incinerators used heavy flamethrowers. The Alliance Military also employed Gamorrean Warriors as close-ranged troops.[63] Besides these mercenaries, the J'kari Thunderers were a mercenary starfighter squadron that were open to being convinced to join the Alliance.[102]
Smugglers were considered a vital pillar of Alliance military logistics. They were transport and freighter pilots that were proficient at bypassing trade laws by avoiding customs or sneaking contraband. Black marketeers were essential to providing the Rebel Alliance with stolen military-grade equipment, parts, and droids. Additionally, the Rebel Alliance was dependent on arms dealers to provide weapons and support Rebel operations, and could have knowledge of Alliance military supply chains.[19]
The Alliance also employed shipjackers, thieves who exclusively stole starships for resale, as special forces privateers, using them to steal starships and bolster their naval forces. Forgers produced credentials that allowed agents free movement across restricted areas for a fee. Forgers could specialize in creating counterfeits of credits, licenses, permits, identifications, ship transponder codes, and military orders. A number of forgers found work within the Rebel Alliance.[19]
Non-combat disciplines
Other specialist Alliance soldiers included Alliance Engineers, which included combat engineers and sappers, experts that constructed and destroyed installations.[6] Alliance drivers were Rebel vehicle pilots that handled a large variety of Alliance vehicles. Assignments given to Alliance drivers were usually mundane, but could turn into a risky mission if exposed to Imperials, criminals, and other authorities.[19]

Species in the Alliance Military
Abednedo—Duros
The Abednedos and their planet were loyal to the Alliance,[41] with a number of the species serving in the armed forces,[103] with at least one as a technology specialist.[16] Most Balosars joined the Alliance simply from a desire to survive. Balosars had a natural charm to them, and for those who tolerated the idealistic rhetoric of the Alliance were seen as valuable and rare assets. Others hoped to find a purpose among their new allies, as they discovered a renewed spirit and an unexpected sense of belonging.[55] Besalisks joined the Alliance Military, including Gadren, whose family was persecuted by the Empire.[31] Due to Clak'dor VII's alignment with the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars, the Galactic Empire constantly persecuted the Bith species, forcing them to join the Rebel Alliance. Despite this, some Bith saw the Alliance's actions as terrorist attacks and were uncomfortable.[6] Bothans served as spies under the Rebel Alliance, and were able to steal valuable information.[104] The large-bodied Bufopel joined the ranks of the Rebel Alliance during their struggle against the Empire, and warriors of the species were known as Bufopel Protectors.[63]
Several Cereans joined the ranks of the Alliance, including Quartermaster and rebel cell leader Ko-Tun Feralo,[54] as well as communications specialist Kidi Aleri.[16] Many Chagrians defected to the Rebel Alliance after deducing that the Empire was a cruel regime, and proved irreplaceable in the liberation of waterworlds. Because of the Chagrian fondness of adhering to the rule of law, including military code, Chagrians served as excellent officers, diplomats, soldiers, and spies, though there were few Chagrian engineers as they were not technologically savvy. In Chagrian society, military combatants used the "color of war" to distinguish themselves. This encouraged solidarity between Chagrian rebels, and identified their dedication to the Rebel Alliance cause.[2]
Many Duros served in the armed forces of the Rebel Alliance in a variety of roles.
The Coyerti were extremely resistant to the Empire and its efforts against their species. Due to their complicated biology, however, they were extremely vulnerable during their mating season, a weakness the Empire sought to exploit. As a result, Coyerti requested aid from the Rebel Alliance, and the combined forces allowed the Coyerti to be protected throughout their mating season.[31] At least two Devaronians were part of the Alliance, one being Cikatro Vizago,[105] while the other was Tress Hacnua.[106] Another, Au B'ree, considered joining the Alliance.[107] The Rebel Alliance made a treaty with the Dorneans, after which numbers of Braha'tok-class gunships entered Alliance service.[52] Dowutins served as mercenaries during the Imperial Era, with many, known as Dowutin Hunters, joining the Rebel Alliance to fight the Empire.[63] After the Empire's crackdown of Pipada, many Drabatans joined resistance groups,[51] with at least one, Pao, joining the Alliance Military as a commando[49] while others that joined the special forces of the Alliance became known as Drabatan Saboteurs.[63]
Many Dressellians joined the Alliance's armed forces, as the species were previously loyal to the Galactic Republic and thus joined the Rebel Alliance after its demise.[108] As Duros became fugitives following the Imperial occupation of their world, many joined the Rebel Alliance. Duros served as prominent leaders, such as Shriv Suurgav,[41] as well as spies like Bot,[109] and as pilots such as L'ulo L'ampar[110] and Jamman.[111] One Duros, Massa, served as an admiral in the Alliance's navy.[16]
Elom—Human
The Eloms and Elomin were driven to the Rebel Alliance due to the Imperial abuses of their world and others. Most Eloms that joined the Alliance had already left their homeworld, the planet Elom, whether they were forcefully moved or had ambitions of their own, and were motivated to fight due to their witnessing or experience of Imperial crimes and transgressions. Several rebel Eloms returned to their homeworld to instigate resistance efforts where they could, and despite their pacifist nature, dedicated Eloms were capable Alliance soldiers. The Elomin where much more motivated to fight the Empire, especially the individuals who escaped forced labor in Imperial mines. Many Elomin who are inclined to fight, however, were unable to join the Rebel Alliance because they were trapped on Elom.[30] At least one Elomin, Aran, served the Alliance as a secret informant.[112]
An Elomin soldier of the Rebel Alliance
The Rebel Alliance supported the Eloms' and Elomins' struggle against the Imperial occupation of Elom, and the Rebellion dispatched Elom and Elomin agents and operatives to support resistance efforts, though there was hardly any organized or effective resistance operation. Individual agents recruited and resisted, and sought methods to maximize their effectiveness. Rebel Elom agents freely used the planet's underground cavern networks, though the winding underground travel was never as direct as overland or air travel. This difficulty became a major weak link that had the potential to expose secret entrances to each cavern and forced Rebel agents into the open. Elomin agents, however, had much greater access to Imperial plans on the surface, and were able to frequently witness Imperial efforts. Despite their movement being more limited, they were able to gather more important information for the Rebel Alliance and other resistance operations, and were more easily able to transmit or transfer intelligence offworld.[30]
Several members of the Er'Kit species served as mercenaries for the Rebel Alliance, becoming known as Luggabeast Munitioneers.[63] Falleen also took part in the conflict, with at least one, U'il, serving in the Rebel Alliance as an undercover operative.[113] Gamorreans were also employed by the Alliance as mercenaries, with the rebels recruiting cadres of Gamorrean Warriors.[63] Considered a peaceful species, Gigorans that fled the Imperial slavery operations on Gigor usually turned to a vengeful lifestyle that became violent as they became mercenaries, resistance fighters, or bounty hunters.[51] The Gigoran Moroff served in the Partisans,[49] while other Gigoran mercenaries joined the Rebel Alliance and served as heavy front-line infantry, becoming known as Gigoran Fighters.[63] Gran members joined the Alliance, with a number becoming infantry soldiers.[114]
As humans were the most populous intelligent species in the galaxy,[65] they were plentiful in the Rebel Alliance's armed forces.[9] Humans hailed from numerous worlds under threat by the Empire,
- Human
- Alderaanian (Carlist Rieekan, Leia Skywalker Organa Solo, Bail Prestor Organa)
- Chandrilan (Mon Mothma)
- Corellian (Han Solo, Crix Madine, Bob Hudsol)
- Lothalite (Ryder Azadi)
- Polynean
- Humans from Contruum (Airen Cracken), Commenor (Jan Dodonna), Virujansi (Antoc Merrick, Garven Dreis), Sulorine (Vanden Huyck Willard), Ralltiir (Pharl McQuarrie), Tatooine (Jennica Pierce), Majoros (Anj Zavor)
Iakaru—Lasat
Mandalorian—Quarren
The "soul" of the Alliance, the Mon Calamari were a[115] gentle[116] amphibious species pressed into conflict against the Galactic Empire following the subjugation of their homeworld. In retaliation, the Mon Calamari became one of the vital species of the Alliance Military, supplying the Rebel Alliance Navy with vital warships[115] and their determination to restore freedom to the galaxy.[116]
Mon Calamari shipwrights were skilled and artisanal engineers, and groups of them served aboard Alliance starships due to the prominence of their warships in Alliance Military forces. These engineers repaired battle damaged and maintained naval ships to their renowned levels of quality despite the scarcity of Alliance resources. Other Mon Calamari shipwrights designed new ships directly for service.[19] Mon Calamari also served in the Alliance Armed Forces as officers aboard warships
A number of Muuns, famous for their control of the InterGalactic Banking Clan and role in the galactic economy, transferred funds to Rebel Alliance treasuries, with the aim of their people becoming truly independent if the Rebellion succeeds against the Empire.[117]
Pau'ans served in the armed forces, with one Pau'an serving as a major.[118] Although they shared their homeworld with the Mon Calamari, many Quarren were reluctant to join the Rebel Alliance. As a result, many agitators attempted to bring their people into the Rebel Alliance.[19] Eventually, various Quarren joined the Alliance military forces as heavy gunners,[96] troopers, specialists, and officers.[41]
Ranat—Twi'lek
At least one member of the Ranat species, Musmuris Reetgeet, served in the Alliance Military.[23] Many Rodians were recruited into the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and served as infantry soldiers.[41] Rodian Snipers were specialized Rodian infantry units that utilized long-range weaponry.[96]
Talz—Zabrak
Droids
- 3PO-series protocol droids
- C-3PO
- Captain K-3PO
- Droid from Lead by Example
The Rebel Alliance relied on an abundance of droids to assist with many duties, including the repair and maintenance of starfighters. Astromech droids served for navigational instruments and for technical support on starfighters, but also served alongside industrial maintenance droids to run diagnostics, conduct repairs, and install upgrades on starfighters.[8] Part of why Alliance starfighters were more advanced than their Imperial counterparts was due to the astromechs used. In-flight repairs by astromech droids allowed Rebel starfighters to remain active in combat.[19]
2-1B surgical droids and other medical droids were used by the Alliance Military to aid their wounded personnel. As trained medics and doctors were rare, the Alliance deployed medical droids in their stead. More sophisticated models also had more expertise and bedside manners that provided quick recovery for Alliance military personnel.[19]
Equipment
Uniforms
Officers
Uniforms in the Alliance Military were a broad array of native military uniforms, de-badged Imperial Military surplus, and diverse civilian and governmental attire modified for military use. Dress uniforms were worn for ceremonial purposes, and were an assortment of formal attire from a variety of worlds and functionally military uniforms. Similar to standard working uniforms within the Alliance Military, dress uniforms were a mix of Imperial surplus and a mix of uniforms from Alliance member species. Although they existed, official dress uniforms were rarely worn by rebel personnel due to the lack of common standard and the reluctance of some Alliance member cultures of giving up the traditions of their own militaries. After some time, that began to change as the Alliance Military became more organized and uniform guidelines filtered from Alliance High Command. Some examples of standardized uniforms included the Rebel Commander's Uniform and the Rebel Instructor's Uniform.[2] Rebel command insignia were used on officer's uniforms to denote their military rank and service branch. The insignias used a metallic square adorned with a number of colored pips.[119]
Ribbon racks were typically worn with a dress uniform in order to display the varying decorations earned by the owner. Rather than displaying the full bulky and heavy medallions that were unfavorable for daily wearing, most Alliance Military personnel preferred the ribbon racks that were issued with their commendations. This was because they were usually small, horizontal bar ribbons that were a few centimeters in length with the same color pattern as the ribbon with the full-sized medallion. These smaller ribbons were made to fit into the ribbon rack and could be unproblematically rearranged as the wearer gained more commendations.[2]
In most native cultures that Alliance officers brought with them, commanding officers and non-commissioned officers usually carried an item that represented their lawful command of their subordinates. This ranged from a ceremonial sword worn across a dress uniform, to a megaphone, to a stun crop. Whatever the item was, it symbolized the power of an individual's command and the officer was rarely found without it. When Chagrians joined the Alliance, many chose to imbed the "color of war" into their uniforms, usually as epaulettes, piping, combat webbing, or a mix of all three.[2]

Within the Alliance's long-range sniper rifle arsenal were multiple models of firearms. Rodian Snipers were equipped with DLT-20A blaster rifles,[96] which were manufactured by BlasTech Industries.[120] Another model was the IQA-11 Blaster Rifle,[121] which could be further altered with modifications.[41]
Heavy blaster cannons
Few Clone Wars-era reciprocating quad blaster cannons were used by the Rebel Alliance, their short supply due to their rarity and expense in the black market, and the difficulty in capturing one from fallen Imperial units. The Republic Z-6 rotary blaster cannon, which saw widespread usage and as such was easily located in the black market, became the weapon of choice for heavy rebel specialists.[30] The Vulk TAU-6-23 "Blastmill" rotary blaster cannon[1] was used by Rebel Gigoran Fighters.[63]
Mounted blaster weaponry
Mounted, turreted blaster cannons were deployed by Alliance forces throughout the galactic conflict. J-10 dual blaster cannons were captured from hidden Separatist arsenals and became common in Alliance outposts despite their low quality.[30] Other weapons included the E-Web heavy repeating blaster cannon[122] and its variant, the Mark II EWHB-10.[14] The "Roba" M-45 repeating ion blaster was used aboard Alliance U-wing transports[1] but could be carried as a hand-held firearm.[41]
Heavy ordnance
Against infantry, armor,[49] and fortifications,[63] Alliance personnel use a variety of heavy ordnance. In terms of projectile launchers, the Rebel units deployed models of varying size and capability, including pistol-sized launchers[30] to heavy shoulder-mounted anti-vehicle launchers.[41] For pistol-sized launchers, Rebels used weapons such as the CSPL-12 projectile launcher, which was a pistol-sized launcher that was retrofitted by Rebel personnel to launch unconventional payloads beyond frag grenades,[30] and the M9 "Boomer" heavy pistol used by Alliance Engineers which fired fin-stabilized grenades in its role as an anti-personnel weapon.[6]
The MPL-57 multi-purpose launcher was used by Alliance troops, and was versatile as it could launch either three grenades, an ion torpedo, a homing missile, or an acid grenade.[96]
Rebel Alliance shoulder-mounted launchers included the large anti-vehicle HH-12 rocket launcher,[49] the rocket/missile hybrid Smart Rocket launcher which could lock on to hostile vehicles and infantry.[96] The RPS-6 rocket launcher was used by Alliance cells against Imperial vehicles.[57] The Alliance's PLX-1 portable rocket launcher used by vanguard forces to bypass deflector shields.[63]
The Golan Arms Mk VIII Gravitic Mortar Launcher was a portable tubed mortar system used by Alliance engineers to clear minefields and target personnel and vehicles using gravitic mines.[6]
Grenades and explosives
Grenades and other hand-held explosive weapons carried by infantry were used in the Alliance arsenal. Models of grenades included the BKX-4 "Shockwave" Grenade that caused damage by overpressure and shockwaves,[6] impact grenades which detonated upon physical contact,[41] C-35 fragmentation grenades,[1] and KF-2 grenades.[52] Thermal detonators such as the Class-A were used.[41]
Other specialized hand-held explosives used by Alliance forces included dioxis grenades which released a mildly toxic dioxis cloud over an area, proving lethal over a period of time. Contrastly, the bacta bomb exploded into a mist of bacta, a healing fluid. Flash grenades were non-lethal charges that temporarily blinded and disoriented individuals within range.[41] C-10 stun grenades were non-lethal disorienting grenades also used by Alliance forces.[98] Smoke grenades released a cloud of dense smoke, ion grenades which primarily damaged electronics with an electrical shock, Sonic Imploders that released sound waves, and thermal imploders which compressed and heated the surrounding air and created a vacuum which eventually imploded with devastating effect.[41] The WP-19 incendiary grenade saw service in more radical rebel partisan groups.[10] The Alliance Engineers' WW-41 CryoBan grenade sprayed CryoBan after exploding, which damaged organisms with frostbite, nerve damage, and shock.[6]
7-PrG proton grenades were timed charges used by the Alliance.[10] Detonite charges were also used by the Alliance, as well as the similar-looking proximity bombs that served as mines. Different types of mines included laser trip mines,[41] proximity mines,[31] and anti-vehicle mines.[10] Other types of explosive devices included Flex-5 Detonite Tape that was used for precise demolition by Alliance Engineers,[6] and LX-9 slap charges.[52] Other devices included Molten Magnet bombs and quillbombs.[123]

Space stations and support vessels
The Rebel Alliance Navy employed a multitude of space facilities to support naval operations, and were extremely vital.[6] A FireStar II-class Orbital Defense Platform, the Sentinel Flare, was brought into Rebel Alliance control in the Truwel system. The Alliance Navy also fielded two Harbor-class Mobile Space Docks, the Sanctum and the Reserve. The Space Docks were designed as a traveling drydock and starship maintenance facility, and had the capability of supporting a fleet or battle group. Because the stations were vulnerable alone, they were usually escorted by at least one or two frigates, or composed part of a larger battle group. The Alliance also had multiple Mk IX Orbital Maintenance Depots that served as an important part of the logistical supply chain, serving as a shipyard. As such, they were all priority targets for destruction.[6]
Other shipyards included the Mako-Ta Space Docks, which performed as the headquarters of the entire Rebel Alliance prior to its destruction.[125] Mon Calamari Shipyards[68] and the Telaris rebel stardocks both manufactured and refitted Mon Cala warships for rebel service.[7] Trading Post Sh'ung-tesk briefly served as a base for the Rebel Alliance,[126] and Sunspot Prison served as the Alliance's space-bound penitentiary for the worst Imperials they captured.[127]
The Rebel Alliance Navy was able to procure a train of two Field Secured Container Vessels and nine fuel spheres designated Black Ice. The train was more than five Star Destroyers in length and carried nearly one billion metric tons of starship fuel. Black Ice was eventually destroyed in a collision.[128]
Capital ships
The Rebel Alliance Navy made common use of multiple classes and models of capital ships. Dreadnoughts, battleships, battlecruisers, and heavy cruisers were deployed by the Alliance. The rebel fleet had at least one modified Providence-class Dreadnought in its service,[129] as well as at least one Lucrehulk-class Battleship named Lucrehulk Prime.[130] At least one Maelstrom-class battle cruiser, the Simoom, was also used by the rebels.[2] Multiple Marsheem-class heavy cruisers were part of the rebel navy.[71] Alliance forces were also briefly in control of an upgraded[131] Imperial I-class Star Destroyer,[7] the Harbinger before its destruction.[132]
The Star Cruiser series of the Mon Calamari served as the foundation of the Alliance Navy.[133] A diverse amount of ship types were derived from the Mon Calamari cruisers. Heavy cruisers included the MC80 Star Cruiser, which included the MC80A Home One Type Heavy Star Cruiser, the MC80 Liberty Type Heavy Star Cruiser,[134] and a wingless variant of the Liberty Type.[15] Cruisers like the MC75 Star Cruiser[49] and its sub-variants the MC75 Armored Cruiser[135] and MC75 Ordnance Cruiser were deployed by the naval arm of the Alliance.[136]
Additionally, other cruisers included a cruiser with three engines and two large wings, a cruiser with three prongs,[137] another type of Mon Calamari cruiser,[15] the cruiser type the Yavin's Hope belonged to,[137] a cruiser with small wings,[74] and the Geist type cruisers.[137]
Other capital ships in service to the Rebel Alliance included at least one modified Recusant-class light destroyer,[129] Dreadnought-class heavy cruisers[102] like 49AX3,[118] and carriers. Examples of carriers included different models[137] of Quasar Fire-class cruiser-carriers[81] and Neutron Star-class bulk cruisers that were converted into carriers used by the Alliance Starfighter Corps.[102]

Auxiliaries and transports
Many craft served the Alliance Navy as support ships. The Ainik-class scientific survey vessel was deployed by Rebel naval forces and conducted scientific missions.[30] Fuel ships such as the Golan Ribbon tanker supported Alliance operations,[128] as did many transports such as the Spirit of Jedha[138] and GR-75 medium transports, which were widely used by the Alliance in a variety of additional roles, including as hospital ships, rescue ships, communication ships, resupply ships, fireships, and as troop transports.[7] These ships could also be combat retrofitted.[139]
The Alliance utilized various models of troop carriers to deploy its forces, including the CR20 troop carrier[63] and its derivative, the Caisson-class engineering troop carrier.[6] The CR25 troop carrier was deployed to transport ground forces, as was the E-9 Explorer.[63]
Shuttles and freighters
Shuttlecraft were widely used, with the Taylander shuttle serving as a transport and cargo vessel.[140] THe E-50 Landseer was a model of shuttle used as an ambulance ship, providing medical and repair payloads unto battlefields.[63] Stolen Lambda-class T-4a shuttles such as the Antarra[141] and the Tydirium saw use by Alliance forces, especially for infiltration missions into Imperial territory.[15]
Freighters like the Atom Edge were used by Alliance forces to ferry supplies, while other freighters such as HWK-290 light freighters were modified to serve as bombers.[63] Freighters and light spacecraft were used by rebel cells such as the Spectres[81] and specialized Alliance teams like the Heroes of Yavin for various mission roles.[142] These ships included Inyusu-class Star Yachts like the Mellcrawler and Mellcrawler II, J-type 327 Nubian royal starships, Kom'rk-class fighter/transports, Lancer-class pursuit craft,

Locations
Overview
- "We lack the military power to stand up to the Empire in an all-out fight. We can't match the Empire's growing network of military bases, garrisons, and space stations, but we have our own secret bases spread across the galaxy that give our forces safe places to train and rest. The galaxy is enormous, and we have used that fact to successfully stay hidden."
- ―Bail Organa, in a rebel dossier to Mon Mothma
The Rebel Alliance established secret bases, temporary outposts, and supply caches in many sectors throughout the galaxy during the Imperial Era. In order to prevent hostile forces of the Alliance from discovering these locations, Alliance field agents and scouts sought worlds that were in remote, and at times, uncharted territories. These locations were far from Imperial patrols and common hyperspace trade routes. Alliance bases usually contained numerous personnel and infantry units, starfighters, command and communications hubs, and equipment and material for manufacturing weapons. Local supplies and the surface terrain often influenced sites, designs, and construction techniques.[8] While searching for hidden bases, Alliance scouts located secret Separatist depots.[30]
Headquarters
Originally a regional headquarters[7] by 2 BBY,[144] base on the Outer Rim planet Dantooine was the first rebel headquarters established by the Alliance to Restore the Republic.[145] Concealed as a sap farm,[146] the first structures assembled were prefabricated living modules, which were complemented with fortifications and weapons stolen from smuggling outposts and an energy shield taken from an Imperial prison.[147] The base contained a vast enclosure that could house dozens of small starfighters, dozens of droid-charging ports, advanced communications technology, and dozens of bunks for several hundred troops. At one point, the Alliance troops planned to expand the base, starting to dig underground extensively.[12]
The next headquarters was located on the fourth moon of the Outer Rim gas giant Yavin Prime, and was located within and around the Massassi Great Temple. The temple was a pyramidal structure that was modified to the needs of the Alliance. As such, there were additional rooms constructed, an open hangar and a subterranean level. Additional survival bunkers connected with the temple were also installed. The base hosted thousands of soldiers, at least sixty starfighters, and two GR-75 medium transports.[5] Additional landing zones and facilities were located outside the base near the forests.[49]
In the Anoat sector ice planet Hoth, the Rebel Alliance established Echo Base, a military complex constructed within a glacier. The Echo Base complex consisted of Outpost Beta, Perimeter Outpost Delta, as well as Echo Station. There were also other facilities including Station 3-8, Echo Station 3-T-8, and Echo Station 5-7, as well as a deflector shield generator and a v-150 Planet Defender.[source?] Following the retreat from Echo Base on Hoth, the Alliance constructed a base on the planet 5251977. The installation was larger than its predecessor and had a large hangar housing a number of starships.[12] As Alliance forces were constantly mobile, the military used the flagship Home One as a mobile command center.[148]
Regional headquarters
By 2 BBY,[144] the Alliance maintained regional headquarters throughout the Expansion Region, Mid Rim Territories, and the Outer Rim Territories. In the Expansion Region, the astronomical object Edan II served as a regional operations headquarters. The astronomical objects Talay and Tomark in the Mid Rim were also designated as regional headquarters for the Alliance. The Alliance maintained a larger number of regional command centers in the Outer Rim, with such examples including on Brigia, Fest, Golrath, Polis Massa, Turkana, Vergesso, and the Atrivis sector locations Generis and Mantooine. (expand on these locations)
Priority starfighter hubs
By 2 BBY,[144] the Alliance depended on multiple starfighter hubs, and designated them with different levels of priority. Starfighter hubs that were level five or higher included the planet Farstey in the Expansion Region, which had a flight school. In the Mid Rim, Homon was designated as a level five or higher starfighter hub, and also featured an Alliance flight school. Also in the Mid Rim, Tierfon was another starfighter hub designated level five or higher. The Tierfon Launch Base was located on the surface of the world.[7]
Safe worlds, shadow planets, and caches
Safe worlds were planets that were designated as safe locations by the nascent Rebel Alliance, and many were allied with the Alliance themselves. In the Core Worlds, Alderaan and Chandrila were designated as safe worlds,[7](expand further, regarding Alderaan and Chandrila's involvement in the Alliance) as were New Plympto and Ralltiir. In the Mid Rim Territories, the Wookiee homeworld Kashyyyk was classified as a safe world. Ord Pardron was another safe world located in the Mid Rim. The safe worlds in the Outer Rim Territories included Gutretee, Sanctuary, Sullust, and Mon Cala.[7] Mon Cala's Dac City became a major Alliance center during the Imperial Era.[149] New Alderaan became a safe world for the Alliance, and had a civilian population.[76]
The Alliance designated two locations as shadow planets and caches. In the Expansion Region, the Reegian system was designated as such, while the planet D'Qar in the Outer Rim was designated as well.[7] On D'Qar, the Alliance Military maintained a base on the surface.[150]
Other installations
Deep Core—Mid Rim
In the Deep Core,[151] the Alliance used a Jedi Temple on the world Tython as a facility.[152] In the Core Worlds, the Alliance Military maintained a broadcast hub on Galitan[73] and the Alliance had a naval presence in the Hosnian system by the time of the Battle of Endor.[153]
In the Inner Rim, a Jedi temple located on an unnamed moon that orbited Harkrova I was used as a supply cache for the Rebel Alliance.[42] A rebel refueling station was located on Sergia, also in the Inner Rim.[154] In the Mid Rim, the Alliance maintained a presence on Charros IV, used the Tak-Beam complex on Durkteel, took over the planet Jeyell,[7] stationed personnel on Kothlis,[16] briefly used a small base on NaJedha,[155] and occupied Ord Tiddell, Pothor, and Trasse.[7]
Outer Rim Territories
The Alliance maintained a military presence in multiple locations throughout the Outer Rim Territories.[2] In the Galactic Frontier,[156] the Alliance used Rendezvous Point Lambda-Four on the surface of Ab Dalis, situated near an impact crater. Multiple tents, trenches, and structures composed the military's presence there, and could also support a landed MC80A Home One Type Star Cruiser.[34] An outpost was constructed on Aeos Prime in the planet's coral caverns, and was outfitted with multiple systems.[157] Rendezvous Point C was used in the space above Baraan-Fa, and the Alliance considered the establishment of a more permanent presence there.[24]
In the Choah Belt asteroid field, the Alliance utilized a fuel refinery among the asteroids. The refinery supported the Alliance's efforts in the entire sector.[128] Another outpost was established on the salty mineral planet Crait. The facility was constructed from a mine and outfitted with a shield generator, a tractor beam projector, a hangar, trenches, and weaponry such as v-232 artillery emplacements and v-120 artillery emplacements.[158] Dandoran hosted multiple Alliance military bases during the Dandoran Campaign against the Empire's forces and smugglers.[63] A base was constructed within the Fellio Asteroid Belt.[159] On the Forest Moon of Endor, the armed forces of the Alliance used the Bright Tree Village prior to the coming battle. After the Battle of Endor, the Alliance continued to use the village as a staging ground and expanded their presence,[15] including having a camp,[160] and taking over fallen Imperial facilities such as an outpost[161] and the remains of the Death Star's shield generator.[41]
On Horox III, a temporary outpost with multiple landing platforms, hangars, and shield generators was used by the military forces of the Alliance.[162] With the Lothal sector being a prominent battleground in the years shortly prior and after the official establishment of the Rebel Alliance, pre-Alliance and Alliance armed groups used multiple locations throughout the sector. On Atollon, the Alliance had a significant installation, Chopper Base, as the headquarters for the Lothal sector group, with the base hosting multiple ships, facilities, and structures.[81] On Lothal itself, the local resistance force used a cliff dwelling as an encampment,[163] as well as a camp in Lothal's northern hemisphere,[164] another camp located in a stone circle,[165] the LothalNet comm tower E-272 near Capital City,[166] and Old Jho's Pit Stop in Jhothal City.[58] On the Lothal sector planet Garel, the pre-Alliance resistance forces used multiple hangars in Garel City Spaceport to conceal their presence.[167]
The world Mirrin Prime was scouted by the Alliance and eventually built up.[7] Alliance military operatives were also active on the surface of Orto Plutonia,[30] and naval forces were stationed in the planet's orbit at one point.[168] On Panisia, a temporary base was established for the Alliance Navy in a valley. The base hosted multiple capital ships for resupply, and consisted of multiple structures and a deflector shield generator.[169] A temporary outpost on Reamma, LX-Robynsun V, was used as a base by the Alliance Military. The structure had a courtyard and multiple buildings.[170]
The desert planet Tatooine in the Arkanis sector saw extensive use by the Alliance in multiple instances. Throughout the Alliance's time there, the rebel forces utilized a depot in a settlement,[96] a major military complex,[63] and maintained a footprint in Mos Eisley.[41] A secret major refueling base was located on Vrogas Vas and hosted multiple Alliance squadrons.[171]
Additional locations
Beyond these outposts, installations, and bases, throughout the galaxy there were other the Alliance Armed Forces facilities in use. Asteroid Helix 13-v was briefly occupied by rebel military personnel,[172] maintained a rebel base on Asterios,[170] a base on Bayora,[73] a rebel outpost on Cassidode VI,[1] maintained the Alliance Records Office on Fusai,[173] and occupied the astronomical object Gaulus[7] and Hope Station.[31] Additionally, there was a starfighter outpost on Jamiri,[174] an outpost on Lowick,[175] as well as another outpost on Mek'tradi.[42]
On the planet Molos Alliance forces built up an army,[2] operated a secret base on Noult,[176] used a base on Paucris Major,[177] an outpost on Primtara,[7] sustained a military subsistence on Talrezan Four and Unroola Dawn,[31] had stardocks in the Telaris cometary cloud,[7] and maintained a shantytown named Traitor's Remorse.[42] A secret rebel base hosted rebel leader Leia Organa at one point.[178]
In space, there were several rendezvous points. Backup Rendezvous Point Gamma-Nine was utilized by the Alliance to regroup after Hoth,
Backup Rendezvous Point Gamma-Nine, Muster Point: Stalwart, Muster Point: Vergence, rally point Nova, Rendezvous Point Delta-Three
History
Background
Fall of the Republic
Following centuries of peace since the end of the Jedi-Sith War,[179] the Galactic Republic's Congress became mired in rampant corruption, inaction, and bureaucratic procedure[180] as senators prioritized their own interests above the common good. One senator, Sheev Palpatine of Naboo, took advantage of the Naboo Crisis to become Supreme Chancellor[179] in 32 BBY.[181] Unbeknownst to the galaxy at large, Palpatine's real identity was the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious.[179] Years later, political inaction became worse, and the former Jedi Master and then Count of Serenno Dooku delivered the Raxus Address, denouncing the Republic[182] and starting the Separatist Crisis[183] in 24 BBY.[184]
By 22 BBY,[181] thousands of star systems had joined Dooku's Confederacy of Independent Systems and sparking the pan-galactic Clone Wars between the Confederacy and the Galactic Republic. As a result of the war and the crisis that preceded it, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was awarded unilateral emergency powers to respond. Secretly, Dooku was the Dark Lord Darth Tyranus, and had coordinated the outbreak of war with his Sith Master, Palpatine.[185] Unknown to the Jedi Order, the clone troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic they came to command were secretly modified with behavioral modification biochips, forcing them to obey specific Executive Order Codes for the Grand Army of the Republic.[186] With Palpatine's executive power growing as the war waged on, a group of concerned senators formed the Delegation of 2,000 and created the Petition of 2,000 after conducting the Cantham House meetings,[7] formally protesting Palpatine's actions and demanded that he return his emergency powers back to the Galactic Senate at the end of the war.[187]
Rise of the Empire
By the end of the Clone Wars,[188] in 19 BBY,[181] Dooku had been killed as well as General Grievous, the Supreme Martial Commander of the Separatist Droid Armies. After the Jedi uncovered that Palpatine was in actuality a Sith Lord, Palpatine murdered a team sent to arrest him and pulled the Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker to the dark side of the Force, becoming Darth Vader. Moving quickly, Palpatine communicated Order 66 to his clone troopers throughout the galaxy, forcefully ordering them to execute their Jedi leadership while Vader led a siege on the Jedi Temple in Coruscant, massacring the Jedi there. Afterwards, Palpatine called an emergency session of the Galactic Senate and made his proclamation of the New Order, transforming the Republic that stood for a millennium into the first Galactic Empire, with himself as Galactic Emperor. The senate applauded Palpatine's speech, though at least two members of the Delegation, Senator Bail Prestor Organa of Alderaan and Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo were in shock and sadness over the events. Vader subsequently travelled to Mustafar and wiped out the Executive Separatist Council and shut down the Separatist Droid Army, ending the war.[188]
Beginning the day following the formation of the Empire, Imperial Intelligence and the Empire's Judicial Forces launched a wave of arrests targeting members of the Delegation of 2,000, ultimately arresting sixty-three senators. Among those arrested were Senator Organa and Senator Mon Mothma, and were both eventually released after reaffirming their loyalty to the Empire. Following his arrest, Organa publicly reconfirmed his loyalty to Palpatine, but secretly began to investigate the Empire's framing of the Jedi and work against Imperial interests. Additional meetings between the Delegation took place, the first meeting of its leadership taking place in a discreet location in Coruscant's TriOpt District to discuss how to challenge Emperor Palpatine. There, they resolved to work under Mothma's leadership.[189] Subsequent Cantham House meetings continued to take place through the Imperial Era.[7]
Underground resistance
Resistance to the Galactic Empire occurred immediately after its formation. Shortly after its creation, the Empire dispatched Clone Force 99 to eliminate former Republic loyalist Saw Gerrera and his new Partisans on Onderon as they began an insurgency. The unit failed, deciding to disobey orders and defect from the Empire instead.[190] This occurred while Separatist holdouts remained active and continued to oppose the new Empire.[191] Saw Gerrera's Partisans subsequently began a anti-Imperial campaign throughout the galaxy.[191] Other former Republic allies also began to resist the new Empire, including the Free Ryloth Movement[192] and an underground Wookiee resistance.[193] As more Imperial clone troopers wore off the effects of their behavioral chips, were more frequently replaced by enlisted TK stormtroopers,[194] and a number were experimented on by the Advanced Science Division,[195] clones began to desert.[194] Others joined the Clone Underground, fighting for the liberation of clone troopers.[52]
By 18 BBY,[196] Imperial Senator Organa had created a secret resistance movement and aided in forming some of the earliest organized resistance groups against the Empire by using the power and wealth of the Royal House of Alderaan, including royal and personal wealth. As such, he was able to obtain assets, firepower, and actively recruit anti-Imperial individuals. Organa's resistance movement kept track of insurgent activity, and sought successful groups to work with. Some units fell under his personal command, while others were more so allies that would lend support if needed. Organa was to utilize the Alderaan military for his operations, and it created a network of secret agents known as Fulcrums as well as tapping influential politicians.[51] Former Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano eventually joined Organa's movement and led its intelligence network.[197]
In these early years, an early rebellion against the Galactic Empire took place, including the Raada Uprising which was when Tano joined Organa's movement[197] and the Imperial invasion of Mon Cala. Mon Cala's invasion led to the formation of Mon Calamari resistance groups being formed, such as the Mon Calamari Exodus Fleet[198] and the Mon Cal.[7] As the Empire took control of more worlds, normal civilians became revolutionaries. Such examples were Ephraim Bridger and Mira Bridger, who sent out underground broadcasts that spoke out against the Imperial takeover of Lothal.[199] In 17 BBY, Gerrera's Partisans had allied themselves with the Salient Strategic Command, and a multi-week long battle against the Empire known as the Salient Campaign took place. At the end, the Salient resistance was crushed.[191] In 15 BBY,[200] a resistance and intelligence network led by Luthen Rael and Kleya Marki[201] was created.[200] In 14 BBY,
Creation
Nascent rebellion, civil war, and declaration (5 BBY - 2 BBY)
By 5 BBY,[202] multiple rebel groups had been formed. Such resistance forces were the Neo-Separatist Coalition that included Anto Kreegyr's group as well as Neo-Republicans such as the Maya Pei Brigade. Other insurgent groups were the Bellassan Galaxy Petitionists, the Partisan Front, the Spectres, the Atrivis Resistance Group, the Ghorman Front, the Sectorists, the Liberators, and the Partisan alliance.[source?] At this time, Organa's resistance movement joined Mothma's rebel cell,[7] creating a core element[51] of the nascent movement Mothma dubbed "the Alliance,"[7] and was known to others outside it such as Cassian Andor.[201] Despite this, Mothma continued to align herself with Luthen Rael's "Axis" network,[201] which had been stealing Imperial equipment throughout the galaxy and supplying it to rebel cells across the galaxy.[203] After the Liberators were defeated, the Atrivis Resistance Group contacted Mothma, seeking to join the Alliance network, and were successfully integrated into the military forces of the early Alliance.[7]
Within the same year, Jan Dodonna created the Massassi Group, which eventually became the core headquarters group of the Alliance.[1] Rael's network launched the Aldhani heist.
In 4 BBY,[204] the Spectres rebel group joined with Phoenix Cell, a sector fleet of the nascent Alliance[7] that worked closely with Senator Organa and Ahsoka Tano, following the action at Mustafar, which resulted in the rescue of Jedi Kanan Jarrus and the destruction of the ISD Sovereign.[205]
