Plot summary
Commander Zahra and Lieutenant Gorr watched from the bridge of the Imperial Star Destroyer Tarkin's Will as a Rebel starship was obliterated. Gorr noted their lack of new leads on the remaining Rebel fleet's location. Zahra, however, remained confident, assuring him that she had many plans already in motion.
Gorr then suggested that the ship’s hull was in dire need of repair. Zahra reacted with fury, reminding him that the vessel was not just a ship—it was a monument to the Death Star's destruction and an instrument of vengeance for all who died with it. She expressed her rage at Leia Organa's "traitorous insurgency," which had caused the deaths of countless loyal Imperial subjects. The explosion also claimed the lives of many on nearby vessels. Zahra explained that the ship had been hit by Death Star debris, suffering catastrophic damage. Though it was slated for scrap, Darth Vader offered her any ship in the fleet as her flagship. She chose this one, had it restored, and gave it a new name, vowing that the Rebels would learn to fear its sight.
Meanwhile, in the Outer Rim, Lando Calrissian, Luke Skywalker, and Leia Organa flew a ship through the clouds toward Cloud City. Lando was certain he could help Luke find his lost lightsaber, explaining that the city had an automated system for sorting mechanical debris from ordinary trash. Leia, however, was skeptical, stating she was only there because she didn't trust Lando.
When Luke asked why he wanted to return, Lando revealed he had left someone behind—someone he owed a debt to. As their ship was approached by Cloud Cars, Lando managed to convince the pilots not to shoot them down. He then pressed a button, causing Cloud City's defense turrets to malfunction.
After they landed, their ship suddenly exploded, sending them flying. As stormtroopers approached to terminate them, Lando pressed another button, and a nearby gate slammed shut, crushing several troopers. Lando instructed Luke to go to smelting core D-52 to look for his lightsaber before excusing himself to repay his mysterious debt. Leia, who also had an errand of her own to run, let him go. Lando warned everyone to be ready for a quick escape.
The three of them went their separate ways. Lando found Lobot hooked up to a series of wires connected to the city's central processing core. An Imperial technician realized he had been locked out of the mainframe. Elsewhere, Leia was ambushed by two stormtroopers near a carbon-freezing device and was blasted with a stun shot.
Lando, now also under attack by stormtroopers, called for Luke's help. Luke had just reached the smelting chamber where his lightsaber was supposed to be, only to discover it was a massive hangar filled with garbage.
At the same time, Captain Tanch was informed that a saboteur, possibly a Rebel, had been captured. Tanch angrily chastised the ensign for the trivial interruption, reminding him that protocol dictated all prisoners taken in occupied territory be sent to the nearest Imperial Security Bureau outpost for interrogation. The stormtroopers who captured Leia, having received new orders, successfully froze her in carbonite for transport.
