Plot summary

Lieutenant Magna Tolvan jolts awake in a detention cell, a stormtrooper guard standing watch. She had been dreaming. In the dream, a voice from outside her cell door told her that her incompetence at Eadu, Yavin, and Someilk had earned her three demerits, a sentence of execution by auto-inquest. She was told to step back from the door, which then exploded inward, revealing Doctor Aphra with a blaster.

Meanwhile, on the planet Son-tuul, in the privacy of his relaxation suite, the droid 0-0-0 is using a probic agonizer and other tools to torture a prisoner.

At the same time, on the streets of Son-Tuul, Aphra walks with a member of her crew, Rexa, who holds a hologram of 0-0-0. The droid tells Aphra he is sending her on another deadly mission. Aphra explains that she has been testing a slicer rig and cloned a Tooka, a creature she holds in her arms and had as a pet when she was a kid. She also mentions that she retrofitted some droids in the lab.

0-0-0 informs Aphra that her mission is to retrieve archaeotech. He threatens to reveal to Darth Vader that she is still alive if she tries to run. He scoffs at the idea that the Imperials would ever believe a droid is running the Son-Tuul Pride. He makes it clear that if she isn't actively working for him, she is no longer useful.

Rexa walks Aphra to her shuttle, where she tells her the mercenaries are waiting. She gives Aphra an Aug scanner, which provides information on whatever she scans. The rest of the crew is a motley bunch:

  • Hallio Bas: a Skakoan guide in a suit designed for pressurized hydrogen sulfide.
  • Tam Posla: a former cop who went rogue to chase down a criminal.
  • Caysin Bog: a victim of the criminal Posla was chasing.
  • Dek-Nil: one of the weird droids Aphra mentioned, a retooled Droideka with probability tech.
  • The Violet Ghost: a mysterious and highly moral sword fighter.
  • Sister Six: an assassin kicked out of her cult for giggling.
  • Glahst Omera: a passive-aggressive predator with an unusual shadow trick in its fur.

Aphra tries to fly the shuttle, but it's too heavy. Rexa explains that 0-0-0 wants her to decide who stays behind. Suddenly, stormtroopers surround the ship and order everyone to exit with their hands up.

On the Imperial Internal Affairs Outpost on Dendada XVII, Tolvan faces a firing squad, telling the stormtroopers to "be better" in her final moments. Just as they are about to fire, an officer arrives with a report, explaining that the late Inspector Thanoth named Tolvan his legatee. Because of this, she has been reassigned to the Inspectorate. The officer explains the delay in the report's arrival was due to the loss of Scarif slowing down all nonessential business.

Back at the Son-Tuul Spaceport, as more stormtroopers arrive, Aphra makes her choice of who to leave behind. She deduces that the mission is to raid the home of a dead Techno Union master. The crew arrives at Skako Minor, and as they walk, they discuss how the Techno Union was the strongest separatist faction.

The crew is soon surrounded by stormtroopers and an Imperial Officer, who reveals it was a trap. Aphra uses a code word, and the Tooka she was carrying explodes, creating a large blast that disperses the troopers.

Meanwhile, at the Imperial Inspectorate HQ on Coruscant, Tolvan tries to find information on Aphra. After a little effort, she decides to search Thanoth's personal files. It is there she discovers that Thanoth was working directly for Darth Vader.
