For other uses, see Commander and Chief.

Commander-in-Chief was the title held by a person who exercised supreme control over a military force, typically reserved for a Head of State of a government. During the Clone Wars, Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine was the Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic.[1] The Kaleesh cyborg warlord General Grievous held the title of Supreme Martial Commander and, therefore, acted as commander-in-chief of the Separatist Droid Armies during the Clone Wars.[2]

During the Imperial Era within the Alliance to Restore the Republic, it was Chancellor Mon Mothma who held that title.[3] Recognized as a leader[5] even before being ultimately elevated to the position of Supreme Commander of the Imperial Fleet,[6] Sith warlord Darth Vader acted as the de facto Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Armed Forces[4] due to being empowered by Emperor Palpatine.[7]
