Helm officers,^[1] also called helmsmen,^[2] were naval officers in military forces who acted as pilots of large starships. In the Chiss Ascendancy, helm officers worked closely with the young sky-walker navigators of the sky-walker corps and as a result often grew close to them.^[1]

Tohna was a helm officer before joining the Alliance to Restore the Republic's 61st Mobile Infantry as a commander.^[3]
