- ""Liberators" seize Imperial garrison on Mantooine."
- ―A statement on the armed rebellion in the Atrivis sector
Mantooine was an astronomical object located in the Atrivis sector where the Jedi Master Yoda once took his Padawan Dooku between 86 BBY and 80 BBY. During the Galactic Empire's reign, an Imperial garrison was based there. As an armed rebellion grew in the sector, the Liberators, a resistance group based on Mantooine, captured the local garrison in 5 BBY, but were defeated by the Imperial Navy shortly after.
Description
- "Imperial Navy restores order on Mantooine."
- ―A statement on the armed rebellion in the Atrivis sector
Mantooine was a terrestrial astronomical object[4] located in the Mantooine system of the Atrivis sector, within an intersecting portion of the Outer Rim Territories[1] and the New Territories.[2] It lay in the grid square L-5 on the Standard Galactic Grid.[1]
History
- "After due deliberation, Madame Chan of the Atrivis Resistance Group agrees to the terms of partnership with Senator Mothma of the Alliance. May our factions be stronger together than apart. No more Mantooines! Down with the Empire!"
- ―Atrivis Resistance Group member Catta Dionize, in a message to Mon Mothma's rebellion
As a padawan, Dooku (pictured) was taken to Mantooine by his master.
Sometime between 86 BBY and circa 80 BBY,[5] during the time of the Galactic Republic, the Master Yoda took his padawan, Dooku, on a voyage to Mantooine, which the latter eventually chronicled in his journal.[6]
During the reign of the Galactic Empire, an Imperial garrison was established on Mantooine. However, an armed rebellion against the Empire developed in the Atrivis sector,[4] with Mantooine having its own resistance group[7] known as the Liberators. Another rebel cell known as the Atrivis Resistance Group was also active in the sector, based at Generis Station, but operated apart from the Liberators.[4] In 5 BBY,[8] the Liberators seized the Mantooine Imperial garrison, but were crushed by the Imperial Navy shortly afterwards. The events on Mantooine were covered by news reports. As a result of the Liberators' demise, Travia Chan, the leader of the Atrivis Resistance Group, was prompted to agree to terms of partnership with a larger organized rebellion against the Empire, secretly headed by Senator Mon Mothma, that same year.[4]
In light of the Liberators' defeat on Mantooine, the leadership of Mothma's rebellion introduced an award called the Mantooine Medallion, which was presented by members of the high command to rebel personnel that showed exceptional bravery in the face of an enemy force. The medallion was first issued to surviving members of the Liberators in the aftermath of their cell's defeat, but continued on to be the fourth highest decoration awarded by the high command, being presented numerous times to those that made exceptional contributions towards the readiness of the rebel military.[7]
By 2 BBY,[9] Mantooine became a regional headquarters and operations sector for Mothma's rebellion. It was marked as such on a map of the galaxy that listed rebel safe worlds, starfighter hubs at level five or higher, regional headquarters and operations sectors, and deep space caches.[4] That same year saw the rebellion's formalization as the Rebel Alliance.[10] By 1 BBY,[11] the rebel UT-60D U-wing starfighter/support craft had been used as a troop transport on Mantooine thanks to the influence of General Antoc Merrick.[3] The U-wing's use there was noted in a report from Merrick to Mothma in which he proposed the wider use of U-wings as a multi-role starship. That report, as well as the map of rebel locations, were soon incorporated into an archive of non-electronic documents known as The Rebel Files by archivist Hendri Underholt.[4]
Behind the scenes
Mantooine was first mentioned in the form of the "Mantooine Medallion" and "Mantooine resistance" in Fantasy Flight Games' 2016 canon sourcebook Lead by Example.[7] It was later introduced individually in Daniel Wallace's 2017 reference book Star Wars: The Rebel Files.[4]

- ↑ Dooku: Jedi Lost establishes that Yoda took Dooku to Mantooine when the latter was the former's padawan. Star Wars: Timelines dates Dooku's induction as Yoda's padawan to 86 BBY and Dooku's undertaking of his first padawan to around 80 BBY. Therefore, the voyage to Mantooine took place between those times.
