Plot summary
Pirate ambush
- "Take your shots now and circle around—we're outgunned. Badly! Sandrin—get everyone back, now! This is a disaster!"
- ―Rynn Zenat, upon the ambush sent by the pirates
At the edge of the Fenril sector, Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker and New Republic pilot Rynn Zenat are flying their X-Wings to cut off a group of pirates attempting to raid a New Republic Supply ship. Chasing after a vessel that raided Pirros, they are lured into the presence of an Imperial Star Destroyer, leaving the whole squadron of starfighters confused. The squadron is ambushed by more pirates, picking them off one by one, severely outgunned, the squadron attempts to get back and evade the attackers. The pilot Sandrin is coming under heavy fire from three pirate vessels, Luke tries to get the squadron into a position to assist her, but his efforts are wasted, Sandrin is killed by the pirates.
Luke orders a retreat, since the firepower of the pirates is unlike anything they'd experienced before. Rynn sees a pirate ship crashing to the unknown planet below, thinking this is the last opportunity to learn about the pirates, she chases after the ship. Luke orders the remaining fighters back to Chandrila to inform Ackbar what they are up against, while he follows Rynn down to the planet to provide support. Rynn runs off to the wreckage while Luke lands on the planet himself. Skywalker ignites his lightsaber after sensing a darkness he hasn't felt since his confrontation in the caves of Dagobah. Catching up with Rynn, she has her Blaster pointed at the pirate, who survived the crash.
Meeting with the Pirrosi
- "Believe me, I understand—the stories from the front lines were devistating. But we can't lose our sense of urgency either. This trade summit is a pivotal moment, Mon. We didn't fight these battles—these wars—to merely sit back and savor the victory. There's work to be done. And the onus is on us to spread the ideals that we hope to build this New Republic on. We've got to welcome the galaxy into our fold. And it won't always be easy—it never is."
- ―Leia Organa, to Mon Mothma
On Chandrila, Leia Organa Solo and Chancellor Mon Mothma discuss the membership of Pirros within the New Republic. Mothma isn't certain that the new Pirrosi leadership will share the same cooperation as the leadership in the Galactic Republic, but Leia states that the battles and wars that they have both fought within were for nothing if they don't take the initiative to build up this Republic and benefit in an upcoming trade summit. Entering the conference room, Councillor Kith Alaytia introduces the two to the Pirrosi Delegation and its leader, Prime Minister Kezrin Almovar. Not wasting any time, the two political bodies begin discussions.
Almovar begins talks by suggesting that the desperation for Pirros to join the New Republic is the efforts of desperate bullies. Leia finds this proclamation to be unfair, and that their intentions are to help make a better and safer Galaxy, and Mothma adds that combining the resources allows for unity, better trading, and defense. Almovar feels like the only people benefitting is the New Republic, since the supplies (sent as a gesture of goodwill) are always being intercepted by pirates, finding this to show how weak they truly are. Almovar also thinks that this would be an easier agreement if the New Republic was coming from a position of power, not reeling from the consequence of the Battle of Jakku and Moff Adelhard's last stand. She also turns to Alaytia, bringing up the fact that she used to be an imperial Lieutenant. Leia is very unhappy with such comments and an unnecessary attack on Alaytia, telling her that she should be more mindful of the gossip she holds close to her, and wary of the enemies she makes, especially those who wish to be friends.
Trouble at all ends
- "As of this moment, the planets of the Fenril sector have united under one banner. Trade with the New Republic is suspended until a new treaty is agreed upon, and any trespassers into our territory will by dealt with—and met with lethal force."
- ―Kezrin Almovar, to Leia Organa
Meanwhile, in Alshuey Town on Guat'a, Beilert Valance is thrown out of a local cantina by a gang threatening to teach him a lesson. However, Valance tells them he will not beg for mercy, since no one will die today. Both parties begin firing at each other, but Han and Valance duck behind cover. Attempting to get the upper hand in the situation, the two fire at a generator, creating a large explosion. The two take this opportunity to run to the Millennium Falcon and escape the Zantarrk Gang.
Back on the unknown planet in the Fenril sector, the pilot of the crashed ship attempts to attack Luke and Rynn with a Knife, but he uses the Force to knock and disarm the pirate. The pirate ushers Luke closer to him, and tells him something. In response, Luke is visibly shaken, begging for more information, Rynn tells him to get back as the pirate reaches for something, unleashing a large explosion between them. From the explosion, Luke is injured and knocked unconscious.
On Chandrila, Leia is informed that the New Republic has been expelled from the upcoming trade summit, but Pirros and their allies are adamant that they don't need the New Republic. Communicating with the Prime Minister of Pirros, she suggests that the New Republic isn't needed as much as they think, she suspends all trade between the newly united planets of the Fenril sector, threatening any New Republic trespassers will be met with lethal force. On the edge of the Fenril Sector, a group of fighters from Pirros intercept the Nechrim's Wake and begin firing on the New Republic corvette.
