Ranats were a species of sentients rodent-like humanoids. Ranats had long tails, sharp teeth including large incisors, elongated whiskers, and a keen sense of smell. Ranats were found throughout the galaxy and worked in various occupations including as bounty hunters and soldiers.
Biology and appearance
The species of sentients rodent-like humanoids possessed long tails, long incisors which protruded from their lower jaw, elongated facial whiskers,[1] and two brown ears on the sides of their heads.[2] Their eyes could perceive the infrared spectrum and their teeth were strong enough to chew through duracrete plate. Ranats also had a sharp sense of smell.[3]
Ranats in the galaxy
Ranats often encountered prejudice in the galaxy, even during the time of the New Republic.[3]
In 5 BBY,[4] a Ranat bounty hunter and his Nimbanel colleague attempted to collect a bounty on the Trandoshan bounty hunter Bossk on the Outer Rim planet of Lothal, which had been issued by the corrupt Imperial Security Bureau Lieutenant Jenkes. However, Bossk overpowered them and knocked them unconscious.[1] A few years before the Battle of Yavin[5] three Ranat were seen in the audience of a droid-fighting arena. Later, another Ranat, Nevar Yalnal, was spotted at Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina on the planet Tatooine during Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi's fateful encounter with the smuggler Han Solo and his Wookiee companion Chewbacca.[6]
During the Battle of Jakku, the Ranat soldier Musmuris Reetgeet was part of a predominantly human boarding party that captured the Immobilizer 418 cruiser Glaciate. Reetgeet personally disabled the cruiser's reactor governor.[3] In 3 ABY[7] a Ranat[8] Bartender restrained a thief on the run from the Empire.[9]
Behind the scenes
The Ranats first appeared in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope in 1977 as a background costumed character.[10] The alien head prop was crafted by Stuart Freeborn, using rigid foam covered with synthetic hair. The head opened into two sections to allow the performer to wear it, and once closed, it remained securely in place through magnets embedded within the foam structure of the skull.[2]
The Ranats also appeared in the non-canon 2017 LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures episode "Return to the Wheel." In the episode, a group of Ranats attack the B1-series battle droid Roger after he stops one of their group from stealing a datapad during a mission to obtain an energy matrix activator.[11]
