Plot summary

As they travel to Hivebase-1, Chelli Lona Aphra's crew discusses the grim work of Doctor Cornelius Evazan, the "techflesh artist" responsible for one crewmate's cybernetics and the creation of the mutilated Decraniated. Upon arrival, they use the captured General Hera Syndulla to feign a trade with the Imperials. Hera warns the crew that following Aphra will only lead to ruin, but Aphra reveals her true plan: she intentionally activated Hera's hidden tracker, luring a Rebel Alliance ship into a firefight with Imperial TIEs. Using the ensuing space battle as a distraction, she lands their ship inside the base.

They enter a chilling bay filled with the frozen rejects of the Tarkin Initiative—grotesque fusions of flesh and technology. Syndulla identifies it as an archive for experiments too costly to mass-produce but too successful to destroy. While Aphra marvels at the "science" of a Wookiee with a railgun for a head, Hera is horrified by the experimental subjects.

Meanwhile, aboard the attacking Rebel ship, Imperial Inspector Magna Tolvan seizes command. Her superior, Commander Yewl, orders her to initiate the vessel's self-destruct sequence to eliminate the Rebel rookies. Aphra contacts Tolvan, expressing shock that she would commit such a murder, revealing she only cares about Tolvan's safety. Citing an obscure Imperial doctrine, Tolvan cleverly defies the order, choosing instead to capture the ship while also alerting Yewl to Aphra's infiltration of the base. In response, Yewl orders the rejects to be defrosted. As the monstrous experiments stir to life, Aphra's crew is thrown into chaos when Tam Posla, the lawman, refuses to attack them, viewing them as victims. The rejects advance, revealing their orders: capture General Syndulla and kill everyone else.
