Rebel sentries[2] were Rebel Alliance personnel who monitored incoming and departing starships from the top of a watchtower near the Great Temple, the Rebellion's headquarters on Yavin 4.[1] In 1 BBY,[3] a Rebel MP wearing the uniform of a Rebel sentry led Jyn Erso, who was recently freed from Imperial captivity by Extraction Team Bravo, through the Great Temple to bring her before the Alliance leaders.[4]
Behind the scenes
The Rebel sentry first appeared in the first Star Wars film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, released on May 25, 1977.[1] The sentry was played by Industrial Light & Magic's Lorne Peterson, who said that he conducted the dangerous job of standing in the watchtower because he was the only one in the special effects crew who had no children. The device that Peterson was holding during the scene was a pair of light meters taped together.[5]
The Rebel sentry made a re-appearance in the first Star Wars anthology film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,[4] released on December 16, 2016.[6] The part was played by the film's co-producer, John Swartz,[7] while the MP seen leading Jyn Erso was played by Bronson Webb.[4]
