Plot summary
- "They ignored you, and now so many suffer. But it's your fault too, isn't it? You let them ignore you. Even though you know they're weak. Even though you know you're strong. And now you grieve. I can feel you pain. Your guilt. It's too much. But it doesn't have to be this way. I can't put a vision into your mind. But I feel you forming one already. Just imagine if you gave yourself permission to fly away."
- ―Darth Sidious to Luke through the Force
A 49AX3 Imperial Heavy cruiser, now under rebel control, approaches Imperial Refining Platform M36. The rebels aboard the cruiser discuss that the station is not filled with organic life-forms, but security droids roam the platform instead. Concerned for the challenge ahead, the rebels are joined by Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker, who tells them to hold back and wait for his confirmation of safety. Luke leads the rebels into the facility, and destroys the security droids with his lightsaber. With the facility completely under rebel control, they can easily access and steal fuel from the refinery. The Major, who is leading the mission, is slightly uneasy to the theatrics of Luke Skywalker, having only seen similar techniques used by the Sith Lord Darth Vader.
Across the galaxy, Darth Vader and Darth Sidious communicate by Hologram, discussing how Skywalker manages to elude his father. Vader decrees he will continue to hunt down the Jedi, but Sidious dismisses his apprentice to ponder on Skywalker. Aboard the refinery, Luke senses a presence, prompting him to ignite his lightsaber. The Major is concerned for the sudden ignition, telling him that there is no hostile presence, and Luke brushes it off as nothing. The rebels return to the heavy cruiser and begin to depart, slowly followed by Luke in his X-Wing. The Major holds off on jumping to Lightspeed to get through the surrounding debris field. Luke feels that they need to jump immediately before Imperial reinforcements arrive. The Major disagrees, stating that if they jump directly into an asteroid, they would lose an entire year's worth of fuel and their lives. Sidious reaches out with The Force to communicate with Luke, while the Major continues to dismiss the feelings of dread. Suddenly, an Imperial Star Destroyer jumps out of Hyperspace and deploys TIE Fighters to deal with the rebels. Sidious continues to play on Luke's mind, guilting him into believing that he is at fault for the suffering, sensing his mind developing a vision of the future, when the heavy cruiser is destroyed by the Empire. Upset at the loss of so many comrades, Luke flies away, leaving the war and the way of the Jedi behind. Travelling to a nearby settlement on a planet, Luke helps out the villagers with collecting the last harvest before the storm season sets in. Luke decides to stay and help the villagers from now on, helping to grow and expand the village he now resides in.
Luke suddenly reawakens back at the battlefield, as TIE Fighters attempt to board the launch bay. Skywalker launches the attack, destroying the enemy fighters, and coming to the rescue of the rebels. He attempts to get them to evacuate the ship, but the Major told them to continue the fight. The Major has gone to bay seven, where he keeps his own private escape transport, which Luke believes to be a cowardly act to save himself. Questioning his actions, the Major explains that he is sending out a beacon to lure the imperial forces from the cruiser and let them escape. The Major then punches Skywalker out of the transport to save precious time, however, Luke traps his lightsaber into the door, stopping it. Luke joins the Major as his pilot, successfully luring the imperial forces away from the cruiser, and foiling the Emperor's plan. Arriving safely with the group, the Major is cheered as a hero, and Luke dismisses any ownership of the glory.
