"An intelligence officer of Teller's skill would know better than to leave his ship to be found, much less his fingerprints."
―Darth Vader discussing former Republic Intelligence officer Berch Teller[7]

An intelligence officer was an individual who analyzed information for a government or organization.

History

Galactic Republic

During the Clone Wars, Republic Intelligence officers failed to crack a new encryption code being used by the battle droids of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, which had used the encryption across a region of space. Once the Republic discovered a message involving General Grievous that its intelligence officers could not decrypt[1] in 20 BBY,[8] the Republic dispatched D-Squad, an undercover squad of droids, to recover the encryption module responsible for the new message scrambling.[1] Berch Teller was a skilled Republic intelligence officer who held the rank of captain. In that capacity, Teller helped train and organize anti-Separatist partisans for combat on the Separatist-held moon of Antar 4.[7]

Galactic Empire

"What's more urgent than a renegade intelligence officer? Imagine if everyone in this room played as loose with the rules as you."
"Excellent suggestion, Blevin. I'm wondering where we'd be right now if everyone here showed the same endeavor as Supervisor Meero. I'll have to think about that. "
―Blevin and Major Lio Partagaz discuss Dedra Meero[9]
Dedra Meero was an ambitious intelligence officer who bended the rules to her advantage.

Dedra Meero was an ambitious intelligence officer who bended the rules to her advantage.

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, personnel of the Imperial Security Bureau such as ISB Supervisors and Colonel Wullf Yularen served as an intelligence officers. During a meeting of the ISB Supervisor Board, Supervisor Blevin accused his fellow intelligence officer and supervisor Dedra Meero of acting in a rogue manner, noting how she had found a way to locate sector data without filing any report through his office. However, Major Lio Partagaz, the leader of the board, was impressed by Meero's initiative and praised her for it, even suggesting the rest of the board should follow her example. Further, he awarded her oversight of Blevin's Morlana sector,[9] greatly helping her investigation into the rebel figure she identified as "Axis."[10]

By her own admission, Meero was a scavenger who needed to put together information as she found it, including data that she was not supposed to have access to. In fact, Meero's habit of bending the rules would prove to be her undoing. After discovering the Galactic Antiquities and Objects of Interest was the headquarters of the Axis network and that "Axis" was the antiquities dealer Luthen Rael, she called a raid on the building, effectively taking over the investigation from her former protege Heert by waiting for his day off and rushing into the raid herself. After Rael managed to outsmart Meero by stabbing himself to prevent himself from falling into custody, Meero would be arrested by Heert and an ISB Marshal over concerns that she had leaked information about a secret project, as fellow ISB Supervisor and the secret rebel spy Lonni Jung had used her code certificate to learn about the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station, with her files having included information she was not supposed to have kept nor been forwarded.[11]
