Plot summary
A rookie X-wing starfighter pilot is informed he is in a training simulation after his ship takes critical damage. Shortly after, Dr. Chelli Lona Aphra and her crew arrive at the secret Rebel Alliance flight school, located in a former Trade Federation Lucrehulk-class battleship, explaining they tracked them using old jump signatures. The Rebel commander recognizes one of Aphra's crew, Tam Posla, as a famous lawman who went rogue, but remains suspicious of the others.
When one of Aphra's pet tookas escapes, it leads them directly to General Hera Syndulla, who greets Aphra with a drawn blaster. Distrustful of the mercenaries, Hera has them thrown in the brig.
That night, a disguised Inspector Magna Tolvan breaks into Aphra's cell. She shares a theory from her mentor about how a strict desire for order can mask inner chaos. The two share a brief kiss, but Tolvan's demeanor hardens as she demands to know Aphra's real name, her mission, and why Darth Vader personally redacted her files, threatening to shoot her. Before Aphra can answer, an electrical shock incapacitates Tolvan, causing her blaster to misfire. Aphra shoves the unconscious inspector back into the ventilation duct she came from.
Believing they passed a test of character by not escaping, Syndulla releases the crew. Aphra then pitches her plan to infiltrate the Imperial Hivebase-1. Her crew suddenly stuns the Rebel guards and abducts General Syndulla. As they escape, Aphra receives another message from the droid Triple Zero. Meanwhile, Tolvan recovers and finds a holo-communicator within the base's ductwork. The scene ends with Aphra's ship being hailed by Imperials, with Syndulla tied up beside her as a bargaining chip.
