A species was a group of living organisms that shared a fixed set of observable biological characteristics. The galaxy and its many planets were teeming with diverse species. Some species were sentient, capable of intelligent thinking, while others were not,[2] with more than twenty million sentient species in the galaxy.[3] The majority of known species, both sentient and non-sentient, exhibited a carbon-based biochemistry. However, a smaller subset of life forms possessed alternative biochemical structures, including silicon-based,[4] and mercury-based biochemistries.[5] All species organisms eventually died, though through the process of reproduction, new life was created to carry a species on another generation.[6] Some species had subspecies, which was group of organisms a species capable of interbreeding with similar organisms, though had traits that were distinct to some traits in other members of the species.[7]

Types of species

Microorganisms

Many types of microorganisms existed, including fungi, viruses, and bacteria, each having their own set of species. Many species of viruses and bacteria had ability to infect other species, such as the deadly Blue Shadow Virus.[8] While most species of fungus did not possess sentience, some appeared to show signs of emerging sentience[9] or were eaten by other creatures.[10]

Wheat, a species of plant, was grown on the planet Mina-Rau for use in food

"That's the trouble with plants... Pull them up or cut them down, all they need is one tiny ssscrap in the darkness... A ssseed or a root... Hidden away, out of sssight. Out of mind. They grow back, ssstronger than before. Indomitable. Unyielding."
Sskeer, to Keeve Trennis[11]

Many types of plants species, including trees, herbs, bushes, grasses, vines, ferns, mosses, and green algae,[12] which generally[13] fed of sunlight,[12] and reproduced by sprouting seeds that would develop into new plants.[14] Different species of plants were used for various purposes by sentient beings, such as being used in foodstuffs[15] or for medicinal properties.[16]

Creatures

Creatures was a collective term to describe all lifeforms with sentience. All creatures required energy to sustain themselves, often though the consumption of foodstuff, liquids, and or gasses such as oxygen to sustain itself, with different species having their own diets. Many creatures required sleep,[17] with many species using it conserve energy and function properly.[source?] Many lifeforms were categorized by unique features, such as the Mon Calamari, who were categorized as an amphibious species.[18]

Beasts

Rancors were a species of beast with emerging intelligence

Beasts,[19][20] also known as animals,[21] were creatures with a limited or lack of sentience. Beasts came in many different species, ranging from small to large in both shape and size, from the small Nunas from Naboo[22] to the towering Zillo Beasts of Malastare.[23] Many beasts were categorized in animal types such as Birds, Fish, Spiders, Dogs, and Insects. Many other animals, such as Rathtars, did not fall into a category, and simply were known by their similarity to other species,[24] or were simply known by a distinctive features like similar to other creatures, such as Rancors, who were classified as being reptilian.[25]

Many species of beasts were grown, caught, or harvested for their byproducts or organic matter by species with higher intelligence for consumption or use in products. For example, the Nerf species were often grown to be harvested for their milk, meat,[26] or Nerf-hide.[24] As such, some professions held my fully sentient species, such as fishermen[27] or Nerf herders were made around the harvesting of an animal species.[28] The fully sentient populations of some planets relied on the harvesting of animal byproducts, such as the people of the planet Ghorman, who's economy relied on the production of Ghorman twill, a fabric made from a silk produced by a species of spider known as Ghorlectipods.[29]

Sentients

The Quarren were a sentient species from the planet Dac

Sentients were fully sentient creatures that possessed the ability to communicate with others. Sentients ranged in size and shape, from the short and nimble Anzellans[31] from Anzell[32] to the large slug-like[33] Hutts from Nal Hutta.[34] Members of unique sentient species often took advantage (or were taken advantage) of their unique biology to complete different tasks, and also often had their own cultures and traditions, sometimes including their own languages.[33] For example, the Wookiees of the planet Kashyyyk[35] observed the holiday known as Life Day,[36] and spoke the unique languages of Shyriiwook,[35] Thykarann,[35] and Xaczik.[35] The largest group of sentient species were Humans, who constituted a plurality of the galaxy's inhabitants. As a result, Xenophobia towards 'aliens', a term used by humans to describe non-humans,[37] became increasingly common that by the reign of the Galactic Empire, a policy of human-centrism was adopted.[31]
