The title of sector commander was used by members of the Alliance to Restore the Republic[1] by 0 BBY.[2] At this time, Alliance officers Bob Hudsol from the planet Corellia and Vanden Huyck Willard from Sulorine, both who transferred to the rebel Massassi Group on the moon Yavin 4, where the Alliance headquarters was located, served as sector commanders. Commander Hudsol, a history scholar and skilled starfighter tactician, prioritized his transfer to Alliance High Command on Yavin as conflict with the Galactic Empire escalated, while Commander Vanden Huyck Willard transferred there to offer his expertise and provided intelligence services to members of the Alderaanian delegation.[1]
Shortly prior to the Battle of Yavin, Commander Willard greeted the recently rescued Alderaanian Princess Leia Organa upon her arrival to the Alliance headquarters. During the battle itself, Commander Hudsol monitored the Alliance starfighter attack,[3] while Willard helped coordinate the battle while alongside[4] General Jan Dodonna, Princess Leia Organa,[3] Major Lajaie,[5] and others. Following the Alliance victory at the Battle of Yavin, Hudsol was present at the award ceremony for Force-sensitive rebel pilot Luke Skywalker and the smuggler captain Han Solo where they received the Medal of Bravery.[3]
