Plot summary
In a cantina, a man with a cybernetic eye, hidden by a visor, brags to two aliens. He claims to be Luke Skywalker, the pilot who blew up the Death Star, and "the best pilot in the galaxy."
Suddenly, Darth Vader arrives and confronts the man, demanding to know if he truly claims the name "Luke Skywalker." Vader uses the Force to choke the man. As the man struggles, his visor falls off, revealing his cybernetic eye. He tries to explain that he's not Luke and was just trying to get a job, but Vader dismisses his plea. He seemingly kills the man and tells the two aliens to spread the word that anyone who claims the name "Skywalker" will be killed.
Outside, an Imperial officer asks Vader if he found the rebel he was looking for. Vader coldly warns the officer not to bring him any more false leads, demanding not to be called again until they actually find the rebel. Vader explains that he has business on Vendaxa and that his time has been wasted.
Meanwhile, Luke flies his X-wing toward the planet Serelia. He spots a coastline that matches his vision and lands there. The area appears to be a large fishing village. Luke approaches a person wearing a hood, asking if they are a Jedi. Suddenly, a large net of fish drops onto Luke, and the hooded figure escapes in a boat. Luke attempts to pursue her in another boat but struggles with the controls. Once he gets going, the woman begins throwing things overboard to hinder him. His boat eventually tips, knocking him into the water. The hooded woman makes it to shore and runs toward a cave.
Luke uses Artoo as a flotation device to make it to shore, where he sees footsteps leading to the cave. He remarks that the cave reminds him of Dagobah and wonders why the Force "loves caves so much." An explosion suddenly sends Luke and Artoo flying. Believing it to be a booby trap, Luke leaves Artoo behind and enters the cave.
Inside, Luke is attacked by various traps, and the cave begins to fill with water. The hooded woman watches as Luke uses the Force to hold back the water. She asks him why he's here and what he wants from her. Luke tells her that he's been having visions of her and that he's training to be a Jedi. The woman scoffs, exclaiming that she is no Jedi and that anyone who wants to be is a "fool."
Pulling back her hood, she introduces herself as Verla. She tells Luke that she thinks he might be stronger in the Force than she is, and that she knows he isn't lying but is just a "poor, deluded kid." She explains that at the end of the Clone Wars, when Emperor Palpatine took power, he issued Order 66, declaring the entire Jedi Order traitors. Most Jedi—including knights, padawans, and younglings—were killed that day. The order still stands, she says, and all Jedi are to be killed on sight. This is why she ran when she first saw him.
Verla continues, explaining that the Empire sent out powerful dark side users called the Inquisitorius to hunt down any surviving Jedi. Their boss, she says, was the "monster of monsters, pure, true evil: Darth Vader." Seeing Luke's intense reaction, Verla uses the Force and has a vision of Luke losing his hand in a battle with Vader, who reveals that he is Luke's father.
The underground cave Luke is in completely fills with water, submerging and trapping him. Verla turns away, saying "Good riddance."
Development
Star Wars 5 was initially solicited for an April 22, 2020 release,[3] but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[4]
Continuity
Darth Vader says to the Imperial lieutenant that he has business on Vendaxa, suggesting that the incident with the Luke Skywalker impostor takes place before Vader travels to the planet in Darth Vader (2020) 1.
