Plot summary
In the Abyssal Rooms of Shu-Torun, the Grand Marshal informed Queen Trios that the only way to breach the walls was with explosives or mining equipment. He warned her that exposure to the external temperatures would ignite flesh in seconds. Despite the danger, the Queen demanded they choose a course of action.
Meanwhile, at the Imperial Retreat, Meorti received an update from Chewbacca on Luke and the Partisans. Deep within the Spike, Luke and the Partisans were engaged in a fierce blaster fight with Shu-Torun guards. While the Partisans provided cover, Luke single-handedly eliminated the remaining guards with his blaster and lightsaber. He instructed R2-D2 to set the room to explode, and they raced to escape before it went off. With one more target remaining, Benthic noted they were too far underground to contact the others.
A Partisan warned Benthic that hyper-charging the final core would destroy the entire planet, not just the device. Benthic gave the order to proceed, stating they would not turn back from punishing the guilty.
Back in the Abyssal Rooms, the Grand Marshal reported that a transport had been prepared. The Queen assured the assembled officials that the core temperature would hold long enough for their rescue, but she had to focus on saving their world. When some of the nobility argued she was abandoning them, the Queen countered that many lives are sacrificed for Shu-Torun's survival. She and her guards departed for the surface. On the vessel, she noted the situation was a massive security failure that could only have been carried out through her personal controls. She ordered the ship to head to the Imperial Retreat.
Aboard his Star Destroyer in the Mid Rim, Commander Kanchar received an urgent message from a team stranded on Hubin. They reported an imminent rebel attack on Shu-Torun. Kanchar, unsurprised given the Queen's betrayal of Leia and the rebels, ordered rescue vessels to assist the Shu-Torun.
In the Spike, the rebels secured the last core and set explosive charges. Benthic ordered R2-D2 to initiate the hyper-charge, and Luke was shocked as the Spike began to light up. He confronted Benthic, who explained that the Partisans do not harm their enemies when they can kill them. He intended to tear Shu-Torun apart and make it Jedha's twin. Luke protested that the plan wasn't fair, and the Partisans responded by pointing their blasters at him.
Luke gave R2-D2 a cryptic command, and the droid released a burst of fog, blinding the Partisans and allowing Luke to escape. He wondered how he could stop them.
Nearby, the Queen's ship detected a critical malfunction in the Spike. The Queen observed gravity modulations and failing generators—a hyper-charge was in progress. Realizing the rebels intended to destroy the planet, she ordered her ship to take back the system at the Retreat to free her army.
At the Retreat, Leia, Han, and the other rebels prepared for the Queen's ship to land. Leia suddenly realized the ship was moving too fast and had no intention of landing. It crashed onto the landing pad and began firing on the rebels before smashing into the Retreat. A firefight erupted between the rebels and the Shu-Torun guards.
Kanchar's Star Destroyer sped toward Shu-Torun. Kanchar ordered an orbital bombardment of the Imperial Retreat, dismissing his officer's protest that it was a holy site.
