Plot summary
On the planet Someilk, in the Outer Rim, Lieutenant Tolvan is approached by Captain Panfor.
Panfor jokingly addresses her as "Captain," to which Tolvan immediately corrects him. Panfor laughs, recalling Tolvan's past mishaps: the Eadu incident, the events on Yavin involving treasure hunters, losing a platoon and a shuttle, and getting stranded on a planet. He feigns surprise at her demotion, adding that everyone at the academy once believed she was the most likely to succeed. He relishes the fact that she is now his subordinate.
Tolvan, walking away from Panfor, reflects on the teachings of her mentor, Thanoth, who taught her to find meaning in everything. She is pulled from her thoughts when a ship blasts down from the sky. Assuming the Imperials are under attack, she rushes back to the base. A group of fighters emerges, blasters firing, with Doctor Aphra right behind them. Tolvan opens fire on Aphra, who orders her crew to return fire.
Tolvan's plan to use a gunship to attack the "terrorists" is thwarted when she finds Doctor Aphra already in the cockpit, a blaster aimed at her. Aphra forces Tolvan to take a seat and, while they wait, suggests Tolvan must have many stories to tell. Aphra then stuns Tolvan and escapes with her crew. As they fly away, a member of Aphra's crew presses a button, which destroys the entire settlement.
Furious, Tolvan watches the explosion.
Back at her base, Doctor Aphra tells her crew that she wants to lodge a complaint, as they disagree on what constitutes a stealth mission. Aphra briefly expresses regret about the destruction, but then apologizes to a black metallic protocol droid with red eyes, whom she addresses as "Master."
