Plot summary
On the planet Serelia, Luke is trapped in a water-filled cave. Verla, the former Jedi padawan, wonders why the son of Darth Vader has sought her help, expressing to herself that she's had a life of hell being hunted by Vader and the Inquisitors.
Suddenly, Artoo zaps Verla and then activates a hidden button in the nearby rockface, draining the water and saving Luke. Artoo revives Luke. Verla wakes to find her hands tied. While roasting a fish, Luke reveals his full name to her. Verla remembers hearing about Anakin Skywalker, the great Jedi hero of the Clone Wars.
Luke explains that he saw her in a vision, where she gave him a lightsaber. Verla tells him she was given a quest by her master to find a teacher and a lightsaber, a quest that only led to death and pain at the hands of the Inquisitors. She tells Luke about the dangers of the Force and suggests he doesn't have to follow its path. Luke insists he must help the galaxy, and Verla agrees to tell him where to find a lightsaber on the condition that he never bothers her again.
Luke flies his X-wing to Tempes in the Outer Rim, a planet with a volatile atmosphere. He lands at an ancient, broken Jedi temple and finds a silver and gold lightsaber on a pedestal. Suddenly, an Inquisitor appears and reveals that Vader built the temple as a trap to lure Jedi.
Elsewhere, Vader, on a call with Zahra, senses something in the Force. He directs his pilot to Tempes, believing his trap has caught someone important.
Back on Tempes, the Inquisitor engages Luke in a duel, surprised by Luke's strength and revealing a second blade. Luke manages to Force-push the Inquisitor into the surrounding flames and delivers a critical hit with his new lightsaber.
Vader arrives at the temple to find the Inquisitor defeated. The Inquisitor tells Vader that Luke was strong in the Force, but Vader leaves him at the temple, still trapped in his role as its guardian.
Aboard the rebel fleet, Luke returns. Leia is overjoyed to see him. To give the crew hope, she asks Luke to share what he's found. Luke ignites his new yellow lightsaber, inspiring the crew.
Continuity
Luke Skywalker's visit to the outpost on Tempes and duel with the Grand Inquisitor were first alluded to in the second issue of Charles Soule's 2019 miniseries, Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren.[3]
