Plot summary
Queen Trios of Shu-Torun hosts a party in the Abyssal Rooms, a series of magnificent chambers deep within the planet. The unique infrastructure of her world is powered by a grand structure called the Spike, which draws energy from the planet's core and distributes it through energy shields. Trios explains to Commander Kanchar that this system is what allows Shu-Torun to exist, but it also means the planet is beholden to the Empire. Elsewhere, Leia, Han, and Luke observe the Spike and finalize a plan to destroy it, aiming to cripple the Empire's operations while avoiding mass casualties.
Aboard the Millennium Falcon, Leia lays out the details: they will target key engines within the Spike, causing a chain reaction that will shut down the planet's energy shields. This will turn Shu-Torun from a technologically advanced world into a normal mining planet, but it requires them to get their hands on the Spike's plans. Conveniently, R2-D2 displays a hologram of the plans, which were acquired from Trios's files. Leia reveals that they can use the plans to find specific targets and, with access to the master security controls, lock down the facility. To do this, they need an eye scan of the Queen, which will grant them access to the Imperial security area.
To get the scan, the rebels form two teams: one to infiltrate the Spike and another to go to Trios's party. The second team intercepts and subdues a Duke on his way to the party, using his vehicle and identity to gain access. C-3PO is disguised with a cybernetic eye scanner, and another rebel, Tunga, impersonates the Duke. They successfully infiltrate the party, and with Tunga's distraction, they get a scan of the Queen's eye.
