Plot summary
The broken ship
As the Star Herald travels through the far reaches of the galaxy in Wild Space, CR-8R "Crater" and BB-00 "Boo" attempt to resolve mechanical failure with the ship. The two droids, however, cannot agree on what the problem is. Crater suspects the fuel cells are at fault whereas Boo thinks there is a problem with the hyperdrive. Crater exclaims that there is no easy solution to this complex problem, but the ship's owner, Emil Graf thinks there could be. He asks Crater if he had ever heard of the Flat Mountain of Yavin. The older droid had not, so Emil begins to tell his story.
Saving the Alliance
Evaan Verlaine knocked out an Imperial officer.
Over three decades earlier,[3] soon after the Rebel Alliance had blown up the First Death Star at the Battle of Yavin, the Galactic Empire launches an attack on the celebrating rebels. As the Empire attack the Rebel base, Princess Leia asks a rebel trooper for a situation report. She learns that the evacuation is underway, but most of the Rebel personnel are still inside the base. The princess exclaims that their fate lies in the hands of Evaan Verlaine. In the bridge of an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, Evaan Verlaine knocks out the final conscious Imperial officer with a punch to the head, her other rebel troopers around her.
Crater interrupts Emil's story to ask how Verlaine and her team managed to infiltrate and take over an Imperial Star Destroyer. Emil simply tells him that it would be a whole different story. He does tease that a proton torpedo may have been dropped onto the Star Destroyer. Nevertheless, Emil informs Crater that infiltration would not be the most difficult task that Evaan and the rebels would face that day.
Verlaine using a Raider-class corvette to divert a star destroyer.
Back on the Star Destroyer, a rebel trooper reports to Verlaine that the ship's controls are locked and the access codes are not working, meaning that they only had five minutes until the Star Destroyer would inevitably unleash its firepower on the base. Evaan realizes that they need to quickly develop a new plan. The trooper argues that there is no time to bypass the security protocol. More troopers started to shout out ideas as Evaan tries to speak. Instead she storms off shouting that she will handle the situation herself.
Evaan Verlaine runs into the hangar and jumps into a Raider-class corvette. She powers up the corvette and flies out of the hangar and into the ensuing battle. She maneuvers the ship around the base before charging straight at the Star Destroyer. Before the ships collide, she dashes to an escape pod and ejects. The corvette crashes into the Star Destroyer, but it hardly causes the ship any damage. The rebel soldiers inside lament ant the seemingly meaningless effort, and Evaan Verlaine watches on from the escape pod, believing that the Rebel Alliance was all over.
The Star Destroyer fires upon Base One, but the laser fire flies past, instead hitting the mountains behind. Her strike shifted the trajectory enough to save the Alliance. Evaan cheers on from her escape pod and the rebel troopers celebrate from the Star Destroyer. From the surface, Princess Leia contacts Evaan to tell her that the evacuation was complete and commends her for her heroism.
A simple fix
Back on the Star Hound, Emil Graf finishes the story by telling Crater that even though the Empire would regain control of the hijacked Star Destroyer, Evaan's actions allowed the Rebel Alliance to leave the planet safely. Emil then grabs a screwdriver and reminds Crater that "sometimes the tiniest elements can have the biggest impact." Emil turns a loose screw, allowing their ship to function again.

- ↑ 3.0 3.1 As shown in "The Lost Stories, Part 3," the events of all the Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Wild Space comics are set a relatively short time apart. "Tales from Wild Space: The Best Pet" depicts CR-8R being aware of the events following those of Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, and "The Lost Stories, Part 1" features the First Order. Star Wars: Timelines places The Last Jedi and fall of the First Order to 34 ABY and 35 ABY, respectively. Therefore, the Star Wars Adventures: Tales from Wild Space comics must take place at some point between those years.
- ↑ Tales from Wild Space "The Flat Mountain of Yavin" takes place immediately after Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates to 0 ABY.
