Plot summary
An unlikely alliance
On Sergia, Luke discovers the speeder he is in is inoperable, as his new accomplice, Warba Calip, reveals it has a secret de-ignition feature and isn't her vehicle. Luke, disillusioned by her deceit, confronts her, but she dismisses his concerns. When Luke asks if she is a Jedi, she says no, but admits she understands the Force. As another vehicle approaches, they push the speeder over a sand ridge and watch from a safe distance before continuing on foot. Warba advises Luke on a path to the next town and warns him about the dangers of carrying a lightsaber, demonstrating her ability to manipulate the Force by nearly taking his.
Despite her nature as a hustler, Luke asks Warba to teach him, as he must stop the Empire. She agrees, offering to teach him to "focus, to reach out with your mind alone to find that which you seek," but says it will take weeks. Confusingly, she then suggests they go rob a bank.
Missions in motion
At the Carpo Grand Regent Hotel on Lanz Carpo, Leia and Han check in as guests of District Advocate Dar Champion. They are assigned the honeymoon suite and receive complimentary formal wear. Leia, well aware of the dangers, warns Han about Boss Carpo's spies, but Han assures her he has experience with such criminals. They make their way to a back hallway, where Leia finds the layout is familiar, like the Old Alderaan Grand. She explains that they need to quickly upload fake messages, deactivate their encryption, and escape before the Empire arrives.
As they prepare to complete their mission, several Carpo officers confront them. Han and Leia, with the help of a disguised Dar Champion, take them out. Dar admits he overheard their plan to frame Boss Carpo and expresses his disapproval, as it would leave the planet under the Empire's control. He then points two blasters at them and declares that "the honeymoon is over."
A Wookie's dilemma
On the volcanic planet K43, Chewbacca pilots the Millennium Falcon away from a hostile Star Destroyer, desperately trying to find a way to deactivate the detonators he and C-3PO left behind. If he fails, the sentient rock people they met will perish. The rock creatures, however, attack the ship, though C-3PO believes he has finally found a way to communicate with them. The creatures then take C-3PO and vanish into the ground.
Meanwhile, the Executor arrives in K43's orbit. Imperial officers detect only one organic life-form on the planet, a Wookie. Suddenly, Darth Vader enters and tells the officers that it must be a trap, but one they can use to their advantage.
