Plot summary

On a rebel ship, three reunited divisions—four, seven, and eleven—gather for a briefing. Princess Leia acknowledges the gathering is thanks to the bravery of Starlight Squadron, and others, following their scattering at Hoth. She states that locating the remaining divisions is their primary goal, but not their only one.

Leia then hands the floor to Admiral Ackbar, who lays out their secondary goals. First, they need to reestablish their supply chain. He explains that Captain Holdo has been trying to secure fuel and provisions from crime families, but a recent syndicate war is hindering her efforts. Ackbar also stresses that rescuing Lieutenant Shara is a top priority.

Luke's struggle

Leia notices Luke seems distracted. He apologizes, admitting he's not ready to face Vader again but knows he must. Leia assures him that she will explain his need to complete his training to Mon Mothma.

Luke, feeling overwhelmed, consults R2-D2's list of potential Jedi temple sites. He notes the list is Imperial, and fears there may be nothing left at the locations, but realizes he has no other choice if he is to continue his Jedi training.

A desperate search

Luke pilots his X-Wing to several locations, including Ilum, an abandoned Jedi temple he found on the list. He hides his ship in deep gorges, sensing the pain caused by the Empire's ongoing destruction of the planet. He narrowly slips by Imperial blockades at other sites, like Arashar, before landing on Lothal, where he can sense the Force but can't get it to respond.

His search finally brings him to the abandoned River Moon of Al'doleem and then to Mount Pasvaal, where he senses a faint connection to the Force. He lands his ship and approaches a group of stormtroopers, attempting a Jedi Mind trick he's seen Ben Kenobi and Yoda use, but it fails. As he walks through the city with his hood up, R2-D2 beeps in alarm. Luke turns to see a man advising him to come inside before his lightsaber is noticed.

A new ally

Inside, the man, who introduces himself as Colli, asks if Luke is a Jedi. He explains that he once knew a Jedi named Kirak Infil'a, who saved his life from Darth Vader, but died shortly after. He and his sister were evacuated, but their parents were lost when a nearby dam broke, flooding the city.

Colli reassures R2-D2 that he doesn't plan to turn Luke over to the Empire. He feels a debt to the Jedi and wants to repay it. Luke explains that he's searching for any surviving legacy of the Jedi and believes Colli's Jedi may have had a special place in the mountain. He tells Colli he wants to understand what the Empire is doing there.

Colli explains that Mount Pasvaal is not just a monastery but an ancient, hollow mountain filled with passages and temples. The Empire has been exploring it for decades and storing artifacts in a nearby warehouse before shipping them off-planet.

A valuable find

Luke thanks Colli and moves toward the warehouse. He meditates before approaching the site, leaving his lightsaber behind with R2-D2. He attempts another Jedi Mind trick, telling the stormtroopers to bring him the most important artifact on site. The stormtroopers comply and return with a holocron—a device containing important Jedi information. Upon touching the holocron, Luke sees a projected hologram of Yoda, who explains that he has many lessons to teach him.
