Plot summary
Lando Calrissian lies in his prison cell aboard Home One as leaders of Alliance High Command discuss his fate. General Crix Madine and Admiral Gial Ackbar find the case cut-and-dry due to Calrissian's confession and legal precedent in other military organizations. Senator Mon Mothma and Leia Organa feel that things are more complicated due to political considerations for the Alliance and its principles of being built on hope, rather than being a pure military operation. They feel that publicly ousting or executing Calrissian for treason would hurt Rebel morale, especially without due process. Although Ackbar and Madine are skeptical, they agree to hold a closed-doors trial.
In Lando's cell, Lobot tries to understand why Lando allowed himself to be caught just to help him. Lando, however, feels it was important enough to sacrifice everything. Indeed, he feels that he may indeed deserve the punishments he may have earned. Lobot reminds Lando that he will be in danger as well as an accomplice of Calrissian, and encourages Lando to seek legal representation.
Lando calls the lawyer Salli Georgio to ask for her representation. In the call, he mentions that he was supposed to be on a mission with Mon Mothma on Uveron before he was arrested.
On Uveron, a group of mercenaries called the Scarabi prepare for a risky, but lucrative mission. Hours later, back on Home One, Georgio and her droid Three-Ell arrive on the Millennium Falcon and are greeted by Organa and Luke Skywalker.
In the trial, Georgio interrupts early on to ask permission for Three-Ell to plug into the audio system to record for her records. After introductions by Madine, Mothma, and Ackbar, Georgio attempts to call for a recess, claiming she is unfamiliar with the Corellian code of military justice. Unconvinced and unconcerned, the leadership denies her request and have Captain Darrien Muskray, the representative for the Alliance, being his argument.
Muskray calls the Talky droid to the stand and gives assurances of the veracity of its memory banks. The lawyer and the droid tell the story of its importance to the alliance, how Lando stole it to settle his debt with Jabba the Hutt, and how it would be easy to decode the Rebel encryption if one had possession of the talky droid.
Georgio begins her cross-examination of the droid, relying on the plausibility that Lando could have been under a Jedi mind trick. Skywalker rebuts, explaining how that is not how the Force works. As Muskray continues with his arguments, Lando confers with Georgio, wondering why she is making such ineffective arguments. She explains to him that there his case is stacked against him and that their only option is to convince the Alliance to stop caring about his guilt, and that they need to figure out a strategy to get there. To do so, they would need to buy time.
Meanwhile, the Scarabi take out guards and fly up to grand doors on Uveron. They burst through, and kidnap Mon Mothma, giving Georgio the distraction she had been waiting for.
