Opening crawl

HOPE DIES
Part V
Queen Trios' betrayal and sabotage has left the
Rebel fleet completely helpless and at the mercy of
the mighty Imperial Navy.

Han Solo has courageously navigated the raging
battle to personally deliver crucial intelligence to
Luke Skywalker, allowing the Rebel fighters and the
newly formed Rogue Squadron to launch and finally
fight back against the Empire.

Now, Princess Leia leads a covert strike mission onto
the Imperial flagship in a last-ditch effort to secure
Trios' override codes and return power to the
cruisers. But Darth Vader has discovered their
deception and is on the hunt for the rebels....

Plot summary

Aboard Admiral Ackbar's cruiser, Han Solo, clad in rebel pilot gear, takes an X-wing into battle. Meanwhile, aboard the Imperial flagship, the Executor, Leia Organa and her team, after getting the override code, find themselves trapped. As Darth Vader kills the rest of her team, Leia escapes in a TIE Fighter, leaving Draven behind to face Vader alone. Draven is killed, but Leia makes it out alive.

Leia's TIE Fighter is then targeted by the very rebels she is trying to save, with Han Solo and Luke Skywalker leading the pursuit. Leia, struggling to communicate, realizes the Imperial comms system is in her helmet, but using it would alert the Empire. She communicates her friendly intentions by shooting down a TIE Fighter that is a threat to the rebels. Luke, recognizing the unique piloting style, realizes the TIE is on their side and orders Rogue Squadron to protect it as it attempts to land.

Safely back inside the hangar bay, Leia hands the override codes to a crew member, and all rebel systems are brought back online. As General Dodonna orders the fleet to escape into hyperspace, Leia and Luke question his decision to abandon the smaller ships. Dodonna explains the heavy responsibility of high command, and then, after a moment of reflection, orders the assembled rebels to prepare for war.

Continuity

Originally, Draven was alive until at least during the rescue of Han Solo and just prior to the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY as Star Wars: The Rebel Files had established. However, it seems notes were missed during production of The Rebel Files, and Star Wars 54: Hope Dies, Part V had Draven dying aboard the Executor. Matt Martin specified that for the time being, the comic is the definitive story for Draven.[3][4]

We're hoping to have it fixed in future printings of the book. For now, you can assume that the comic is the definitive story for that character." (backup link)
  4. TwitterLogo Matt Martin (@missingwords) on Twitter (post): "That death was plotted for Marvel before Rebel Files was written. Remember, the order things come out isn't necessarily the order they're created. A note was given in the RF manuscript to remove the mentions of that character after a certain time but fell through the cracks." (backup link)
