Tierfon

Tierfon was an Expansion Region planet that was home to a Rebel Alliance launch base, an outpost housing at least a hundred rebel pilots. The Tierfon Yellow Aces squadron used the base as its headquarters, defending the outpost and using it for many missions. The rebel activity attracted the Galactic Empire's attention to Tierfon's sector, however, and the increased pressure from Imperial patrols led to the rebels eventually scuttling the launch base and disbanding the Yellow Aces.

Description

Tierfon was a terrestrial planet^[3] located in an eponymous star system within the Expansion Region^[1] and the New Territories.^[2] The world was situated in the Sumitra sector at the coordinates O-7 on the Standard Galactic Grid.^[1]

History

By 2 BBY,^[6] Tierfon had become the site of^[7] a starfighter launch base outpost^[3] for an organized rebellion against the Galactic Empire that was secretly led by Senator Mon Mothma. The base was noted as a starfighter hub of level five or higher on a map of rebel safe worlds, fighter hubs, operations headquarters, shadow planets, and deep space caches that was sent to Mothma^[7] in 2 BBY,^[6] before she had officialized the rebellion as the Rebel Alliance^[7] that same year.^[8] Archivist Hendri Underholt eventually included the map in the compilation of non-electronic documents known as The Rebel Files.^[7]

The launch base on Tierfon had a complement of at least a hundred rebel pilots^[3] and was the headquarters of^[9] a small squadron of T-65B X-wing starfighters,^[10] known as the Tierfon Yellow Aces, which defended the outpost.^[9] The Yellow Aces launched many missions in the Mid Rim^[11] from Tierfon, but their activity attracted Imperial attention to the sector. The intensified^[3] patrols of the encroaching Imperial forces^[12] and their pilots^[13] consequently put increased pressure on the rebels on Tierfon,^[14] and the rebels eventually abandoned the launch base,^[3] scuttling it^[9] by 1 BBY.^[15] As a result, the Tierfon Yellow Aces themselves were also disbanded and reassigned to other rebel outposts.^[9]

Inhabitants

Tierfon was the headquarters of the Tierfon Yellow Aces.^[9] The X-wing squadron was once led by Captain Dosmit Ræh^[16] and included rebel pilots such as Robich Duggsin, Vangos Grek, and the wingmates Jek Porkins and Lieutenant Zal Dinnes.^[17] Dinnes was a human native of Tierfon,^[4] and Grek led some of the Yellow Ace's raids while based on Tierfon.^[11] After the squadron was disbanded, four of its members—Dinnes, Duggsin, Grek, and Porkins—were reassigned to^[17] the rebel base on the moon Yavin 4.^[9] Also among the rebel pilots on Tierfon was the Twi'lek Y-wing starfighter pilot Yendor Brethen.^[5]

Behind the scenes

The name "Tierfon" was introduced into the current Star Wars canon via mentions of the Tierfon Yellow Aces^[18] in two books released on December 18, 2015,^[19] Rey's Survival Guide and Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary, which were written by Jason Fry and Hidalgo, respectively.^[18][20] The planet itself was then first described in Pablo Hidalgo's 2016 reference book Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide.^[9]

The planet Tierfon^[21] originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was introduced in West End Games' The Star Wars Sourcebook. The book was authored by Bill Slavicsek and Curtis Smith and published in 1987 for use with Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game.^[22] Tierfon went on to make a full appearance when Vision of the Future, the 1998 second entry in Timothy Zahn's Star Wars: The Hand of Thrawn Duology novel duology, identified it^[23] as an unnamed setting featured in Specter of the Past, the 1997 first installment of the series.^[24]

The November 21, 2017^[25] canon reference book Star Wars: The Rebel Files, authored by Daniel Wallace, places Tierfon in the Expansion Region, albeit on a map that has erroneously swapped labels for that region and the Mid Rim Territories.^[7] The "Helmets" section in the seventy-ninth issue of De Agostini's Star Wars Helmet Collection magazine,^[3] which was published on June 3, 2017,^[26] and written by Iain Lowson,^[27] instead placed Tierfon in the Mid Rim.^[3] In line with the Star Wars Legends placement of the Tierfon system, and therefore Tierfon, by the StarWars.com Online Companion of the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas,^[28] this article assumes the placement of Star Wars: The Rebel Files is correct.
