Plot summary
On the swamp planet Lehanis, located in the Outer Rim, Jedi Luke Skywalker and New Republic pilot Rynn Zenat emerge from a quest to find Ky Narec's Compendium, a Jedi artifact Luke realized was being sought after by the dark side cult the Acolytes of the Beyond and their collaborator, the rogue Imperial Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard. Luke and Rynn find themselves surrounded by Acolytes, and they prepare for the imminent fight. As Acolytes lunge at the pair with their electrostaffs, Skywalker and Zenat fight back. Eventually, Luke gains enough purchase to step away from the melee. He approaches the Acolyte Arch-Mage Yuan Howzell, who gloats about how the Acolytes use time to their advantage. While Luke has been preoccupied securing the Compendium, Howzell claims they were playing a different game in which they have won in his distraction.
On the New Republic's provisional capital, Chandrila, Princess Leia Organa contemplates her shifting perspectives on the war and her hopes for its ending. She realizes that the finality she sought is unrealistic, that nothing is ever easy. Leia's musings are interrupted by an incoming hologram from the Representative of Kashyyyk, Kerrithrarr. The Wookiee delivers her information, albeit incomplete, of recent whereabouts of the Millennium Falcon. Leia promises to provide as much support as possible to the Wookiees.
After ending the call, Mon Mothma joins Leia, reminding her that resources are scarce, meaning Kashyyyk will not necessarily be able to get the support Leia just promised. They discuss Luke's current mission before shifting their conversation to the topic of Adelhard. He has become a large threat. In the face of such danger, the women discuss their often conflicting goals of securing the galaxy as a fledgling government while staying true to their ideals.
In the Anoat sector, Grand Moff Ubrik Adelhard oversees a naval victory over New Republic forces, proud of his own might in what he hopes will be the revival of the Empire. He is soon approached by Imperial Security Bureau Lieutenant Kith Alaytia and Commander Bragh, bringing with them a New Republic prisoner by the name of Pessin. He demanded an audience, surrendering to try and preserve his life. As leverage, he starts to reveal that Adelhard has a New Republic spy in his midst. Alaytia, secretly the spy Pessin is about to out, bludgeons the pilot with her blaster pistol, knocking him unconscious. She justifies her actions as taking offense to the pilot thinking they are gullible enough to believe such a lie.
Adelhard's contact in the Acolytes of the Beyond, an Anzati mystic named Reyna Oskure, is suspicious of the uncharacteristic fervor of Alaytia's actions, but simply compliments the burning emotion and brutality. Adelhard inquires as to Oskure's reasons for coming to his bridge. She answers with an unwelcome kiss, which Adelhard quickly pulls away from. Oskure asks Adelhard why he did so, wonders if he fears the temptation of what he does not understand. Adelhard claims he rejected her because of it being the wrong context. He recently resolved to embrace the dark side of the Force as a tool, but tells Oskure that he is still figuring out how best to use it.
In the space above Malastare, a holding station for the Imperial forces of Grand General Kenner Loring, New Republic Y-wing pilot Brink finds himself cornered by TIE fighters. Despite his squardon's best attempts, he dies, and his squad mates attempt to flee. They are unsuccessful. The Grand General receives a transmission from Moff Adelhard. Loring informs Adelhard of the laughable Akiva Summit in which factions of the Imperial Remnant attempted to unite under Grand Admiral Rae Sloane. Adelhard works to secure an alliance with Loring. The Grand General is open to the idea, especially in light of rumors of an upcoming final stand against the Republic, but is wary of Adelhard's association with Reyna Oskure. After ending the transmission, he pointedly calls out a lurking officer, Baumin Deel. The New Republic spy flees down a hallway as stormtroopers give chase. He makes it to a comms relay and gets just enough of a transmission out to inform Agent Calder Behrens of Loring and Adelhard combining forces before he is slain by one of the stormtroopers.
Back on Lehanis, Luke tells Zenat of the trap they are in and to start retreating to their starships. The Acolytes, however, are maintaining the fight. Zenat's quips catch the attention of Howzell, who manages to fling her satchel away from her, the Compendium inside. Before she can truly harm Rynn, Luke grazes Howzell in the back with his lightsaber. He orders her to stand down, but Howzell lurches at him with a jumping attack, knocking Luke to the ground as the mage continues her cryptic threats of time running out.
Luke shuts Howzell up with a swing of his lightsaber, taking the advantage. He interrogates her at lightsaber-point. Rynn joins in to bolster threats of violence if Howzell does not answer. Before they can get any information, though, Zenat sees someone swipe her satchel and run towards Luke's X-wing. Skywalker realizes he knows the thief. It is the rogue archaeologist Dr. Aphra.
