Plot summary
Near the blast crater on Jedha, two shrouded figures reveal a partially destroyed structure they call the ultimate temple of the central isopter to Luke and Chulco. They explain the temple will only survive for a few more years, but has much to teach them. Luke senses a disturbance in the Force, which Chulco warns is a sign of a growing desecration.
At the Partisans' base, rebels observe the new, massive Imperial machine and its devastating effect on the planet. Rebel Ubin proposes a plan to burrow ahead of the machine, emerge, and immobilize it with mines. Han Solo is skeptical they have a charge strong enough to dent it.
On a precipice overlooking an abyss, the shrouded figures tell Luke and Chulco that the temple and the abyss itself can teach them about death, which has brought them there. Chulco says the Force guides them, and the figures instruct them to meditate and listen to the chasm.
Ubin's attempt to place charges on the machine fails, and she comes under heavy fire. Luke arrives in an airspeeder and tows Ubin's vehicle away, just as Chewbacca's ship is attacked by TIE fighters. In the midst of their meditation, Chulco, driven mad by the strong dark side presence, attacks Luke with a knife. Luke defends himself, fatally wounding Chulco, who warns of the dark side's power. Luke realizes he must rejoin the rebellion, which needs him more than his personal quest.
Luke suddenly appears in his airspeeder and shoots down the TIE fighter chasing Chewbacca's ship, saving him. Chewbacca, while being taken to the medical bay, gives Leia something that could make a difference.
