- "A city of metal. Of course. Why have you brought me to this abomination of a world?"
- ―Th'er, to Qui-Gon Jinn
Imperial City, formerly called Galactic City and Republic City, was a dense city megastructure that covered the entirety of the Core Worlds ecumenopolis planet Coruscant. Built over thousands of years, the city consisted of five thousand, one hundred and twenty-seven levels, with the lower levels of the city collectively known as the "underworld", of Which four levels were deemed uninhabitable considered inaccessible to all citizens. On the inhabited levels, trillions of Coruscanti citizens of various social statuses resided in the city, many of which were Humans, though a sizable amount of the population was made up of other sentient species.
With Galactic City's first fifty levels having been built by 100,000 BBY, Coruscant's strategic location at the end of several major trade routes enabled the new ecumenopolis to quickly surpass its early rivals in power and influence, making Galactic City a vital galactic hub for culture, education, finance, fine arts, politics and technology. As such, Galactic City soon became the capital of the Galactic Republic soon after the young democracy's founding, cementing Galactic City's importance in galactic history.
As the City continued to expand upward, so to did the republic. However, around 5000 BBY, the fist of the so-called "Sith Wars" took place, which saw the Sith Order take over Coruscant, with the sith constructing shrine on mountain sacred to Galactic City locals due to it's unique light side force properties. Though the Sith were eventually driven from the ecumenopolis by Republic forces and the Jedi Order in a subsequent battle, the sith had successfully corrupted the vergence to the dark side, causing the mountain to stand in stark defiance to the skyline of the surrounding city. As such, the Jedi Order razed the shrine, and eventually, four Jedi Masters constructed the Jedi Grand Temple over the vergence, hoping to return it to the light side of the force, with the temple soon becoming the headquarters for the Order. As the Sith Wars continued, Galactic City was once again conquered by the sith during the Jedi-Sith War, though the jedi once again liberated the city and drove the sith off Coruscant. Soon after, the sith were believed to have gone extinct, and the Jedi began serving a keepers of the peace rather than soldiers.
As the Galactic Republic only continued to expand, Galactic City continued to serve as it's capital. However, the democratic processes began to decline within the republic, with the Galactic Senate becoming ever more rife with corruption. As a result, around 24 BBY, the Separatist Crisis began, with many star systems within the republic leaving, opting to instead join the Confederacy of Independent Systems. This reached a head with the outbreak of the Clone Wars in 22 BBY, once again making Galactic City a centerpiece in galactic politics as the city began to serve as a military hub and headquarters for the Republic's newly-restored military.
In 19 BBY, Separatist Military General Grievous lead an attack on Coruscant, endangering residents of Galactic City and kidnapping then Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, who was secretly a sith lord controlling both sides of the Clone Wars. In the ensuing battle, Palpatine was saved by Jedi Knights Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and the public leader of the Separatists, Count Dooku, was slain in battle. Soon after the battle, Palpatine revealed his sith identity to Skywalker, and convinced him to turn to the Dark Side of the Force, dubbing Skywalker "Darth Vader", and ordering him to storm the Jedi temple, accusing the Order of treason. Vader did as he was told, storming the Jedi temple in Operation: Knightfall, and the Jedi Order was wiped out. With no opposition left and the senate too corrupt to oppose him, Palpatine proclaimed himself Galactic Emperor, transforming the Republic into the Galactic Empire.
Under the reign of the Galactic Empire, Galactic City was renamed to Imperial City, and continued to serve as the galactic capital city, albeit with tightened surveillance and "security". During this time, many government building were transformed, such as the Jedi temple being transformed into a palace for the Emperor and the Imperial Senate Building's Imperial Plaza receiving an update. The city was also host to Empire Day parades, showcasing the strength and technology of the Imperial Military. Despite this, many criminal gangs in Imperial City's subterranean levels continued to operate, and a rebel network began operating out of an antiques gallery in the City, staying unnoticed until 1 BBY.
Following the death of the Emperor at the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, many coruscanti citizens took to the streets of Imperial City in protest of the Empire and celebration of the Emperor's death. However, the uprising was quickly suppressed by Imperial forces, though the citizens of Imperial City continued to fight, with the situation escalating into a civil war, and imperial leaders such as Grand Vizier Mas Amedda entrenched themselves in the city's government districts. Soon after, the newly-formed New Republic blockaded Coruscant, and Mas Amedda was placed under house arrest in the imperial palace by other imperial leaders, leaving him nothing more than a figurehead. However, New Republic forces quickly freed Amedda, who officially surrendered the Empire to the New Republic with the Galactic Concordance shortly afterward, and Amedda was installed as a New Republic figurehead of a new provisional government for Imperial City.
Unlike previous galactic governments, the New Republic opted for a rotating capital rather than keeping Imperial City as the galactic capital once more. Despite this, Imperial City briefly served as the New Republic capital, though after it moved out, the New Republic still kept some government programs and agencies such as the New Republic Amnesty Program based in the city. However, as a Cold War between the New Republic and an Imperial remnant known as the First Order began, Coruscant aligned itself as a centrist world. Yet by that point Imperial City had become intrenched in a war between various gangs and syndicates, a symbol of the conflict and disorder of the New Republic Era.
In 34 BBY, the Cold War came to an end when the First Order obliterated the Hosnian system using a superweapon known as Starkiller Base, crippling the already stagnating New Republic. Despite the Resistance, a New Republic-aligned paramilitary organization soon destroying the superweapon, the resistance was left exposed, and the First Order, now dominating the galaxy, sent military units to Imperial City in the hope of seizing it and using it as a galactic capital once again, though these efforts were defeated during an uprising against the First Order in 35 ABY.

Overview
- "Coruscant. The entire planet is one big city."
- ―Ric Olié, to Anakin Skywalker
Imperial City covered the entirety of the planet Coruscant's surface, and as such could be seen from space
Imperial City, as it was known during the reign of the Galactic Empire,[32] also known as Galactic City[3] or Republic City during the time of the Galactic Republic,[33] was a dense multilayered metropolis that covered nearly the entirety of the core worlds ecumenopolis planet Coruscant, which was located in the Coruscant system of the Coruscant subsector in the Corusca sector.[3] As such, the city's many lights could be seen from realspace, though they were somewhat dampened by Coruscant's cloud cover.[17] On the highest of the over five thousand levels in Imperial City,[17] the richest members of the city's population lived and worked in beautiful metallic skyscrapers reaching over two kilometers into the Coruscant sky, defining the city's skyline.[2] These skyscrapers stood on and next to, denser duracrete buildings which housed much of the city's middle class,[2] though still sitting above the Coruscant Underworld, levels of Imperial City where much of the city's working class lived, which rarely saw sunlight, was home to overcrowded and decaying buildings, and was rife with crime.[1] On all levels of Imperial City, a well-organized transportation system made up of skylanes and public transit systems existed. Due to Imperial City's state as a planet-covering city, the city had a forced dependence of imported goods, only offset by the City's vital position as the capital of many Galactic Governments[2] including the Galactic Republic, the Galactic Empire,[17] and briefly for the New Republic.[22]

Layout
Imperial City was split into striated levels
Imperial City was made up of over five thousand manmade planet-wide striated artificial levels each stacked upon one another. Originally only fifty levels in height,[1] millenniums of urban development slowly buried the original levels, with a total of five thousand, one hundred and twenty-seven levels in Imperial City by the time of the Battle of Naboo,[17] with each newer level being numerically numbered in ascending order from starting from Level 1, the deepest level in the city and the closest manmade level to the planet's original surface.[4] The closer one was to the surface levels, the better conditions were.[17] The lowest four levels of Imperial City,[4] were rumored to hold ancient secrets,[34] but were considered to be inaccessible with level 5 being the the highest accessible level without traversing through pipes.[4]
The lowest levels of Imperial City contained many pipes and supports for levels further above
Between level 5 and the upper levels sat the Coruscant Underworld, levels deep beneath the surface levels of Imperial City that were left behind as the city grew upward.[1] Devoid of all sunlight, the lower levels that made up the Underworld were left in a perpetual state of darkness illuminated only by artificial lights and neon signs for thousands of years.[35] The lowest levels of the underworld were home to thousands of metallic pipes and supports as well as[4] junkyards[36] of trash[1] and scrap from the upper levels,[36] leading to the near abandonment of the levels save for scavengers[17] and desperate refugees from levels further above.[36]
A densely populated subterranean level of Imperial City
Above the scarcely populated bottom levels[4] sat densely populated levels.[35] On these levels, densely packed, cramped, and decaying buildings[1] both on the ground and hanging from the level above stood firmly as skylanes weaved their way through the limited airspace between the two.[35] These undercity levels were generally inhabited by members of the working class and immigrants from across the galaxy who came to the city for a better life. As such, poverty was common place,[1] and vast and cramped slums of mixed use residential and commercial spaces such as the Rooftops slum of Level 2046 were commonplace.[37] Large circular holes originating from the surface known as "Underworld portals" allowed starships and airspeeders to enter the underworld and provided ventilation for the lower levels.[4][1]
buildings in the lower levels of upper Imperial City were built around sidewalks along "avenues"
Above the Coruscant Underworld sat the upper levels of Imperial City. On the lowest of those levels, dense and tightly packed[17] buildings, often in a brutalist style,[38] were built between engineered straight crevices known as "avenues"[17] or "ravines"[39] that penetrated deep into the underworld.[17] Sidewalks were often placed on each side of avenues, with occasional skybridges allowing pedestrians to cross the avenues. While sunlight did often reach these areas, the sun could eventually be blocked by larger buildings on levels further above. To reach buildings from the levels above, pedestrians had to take turbolifts down to walkways on their level, though stairs were also available.[38]
The surface levels of Imperial City held thousands of towering skyscrapers
In many areas of the uppermost levels of Imperial City, large metallic skyscrapers[17] built in the republic architectural style[40] dominated the city's skyline,[17] with some towers reaching over two Kilometers in height from street level. These tall buildings were often built with durasteel[2] and contained windowss made with transparisteel while standing proudly next to cheaper, shorter, and newer dense buildings made with Duracrete.[17] The residential skyscrapers on Imperial City's surface levels housed the most wealthy individuals in the city, and as such often contained lavish features such as private landing platform for apartments and private turbolifts, as was the case with the residential skyscraper 500 Republica.[17] Skylanes on the upper levels went over shorter buildings and around taller skyscrapers,[10] though when a skyscraper was built in the way of an existing skylane, civic authorities simply built skytunnels in the skyscrpaers to keep traffic moving.[2] In areas where skyscrapers were densely packed together, sidewalks and skybridges along the sides of skyscrapers to provide easy movement between buildings.[38]

The Works, a run-down Industrial sector that was located in Imperial City
Imperial City was split into several thousand regions, which were further subdivided into many multi-level and single-level sectors that were designated official coordinates, which were used in official maps.[17] Some sectors were further subdivided into zones, neighborhoods,[17] and precincts[41] that were zoned for a specific purposes.[17] However, entire sectors could also be zoned for a single purpose, as was the case with The Works, a run-down industrial sector in Galactic City.[17] Unofficial names were often given to sectors or an area made up of multiple sectors, known as "towns" or "districts". For example, Sector H-46, which was given the colloquial name "Sah'c Town" after the Sah'c family, a family which owned much of the sector while a group of sectors including the Temple Precinct made up the district known as the Federal District.[17]
The Rooftops slum of level 2046
Over time, some neighborhoods became contaminated with industrial waste and other forms of contamination, leading to evacuations from those neighborhoods. However, as surrounding areas continued to grow, the empty districts became depressions, slowly becoming homes and refuges for criminals and those truly desperate.[2] In the Underworld, large megastructures that includes slums and shops such as the Rooftops slum of Level 2046.[37] In some surface level districts, buildings were nearly entirely low-rise buildings,[17] while other parts of the surface levels held large cluster of towering skyscrapers.[38]

Skylanes
Unlike most airspeeders, air taxis were allowed to divert from the Imperial City's skylanes
To facilitate the movement airspeeder and large passenger ship traffic in Imperial City, the city contained numerous repulsorlift traffic lanes known as skylanes weaved their way around[17] (and through tunnels in)[10] Imperial City's towering skyscrapers in both the city's surface and it's subterranean levels. When in flight, airspeeders were legally required to be controlled[17] by remote computer-run traffic control systems[2] that defined skylanes[10] and prevented crashes,[2] though drivers still controlled the takeoff and landing of airspeeders and could also take control to if the situation required it.[10] However, the city's Air taxis, usually of the EasyRide passenger airspeeder, were given a legal exception, and were allowed to travel outside of skylanes.[17][2] Over time, skycrapers in the city began being built in the way of skylanes. To facilitate the continued flow of air traffic, civic authorities simply installed skytunnels in the buildings to allow traffic to continue on their original routes.[2] Intersections also existed between skylanes, allowing airspeeders to switch skylanes when needed.[17] During the late Republic Era[42] and the subsequent Imperial Era, private skylanes existed for military purposes. During holidays such as All-Species Week, both public and private skylanes were clogged and often left at a standstill.[7]

Supporting a City
- "They say Coruscant used to be like any other planet, with oceans and mountains. But now it's just this, all the way down to Level 0."
- ―Leia Organa
The first foundations of what would eventually become Galactic City were built upon the battlefields of the of an ancient war that occurred on the Core Worlds planet Coruscant.[16] By 100,000 BBY, the first fifty levels of Galactic City had been built,[1] covering much of Coruscant's surface, destroying much of the planet's natural landscape,[16] and driving many native species extinct, with those surviving being forced to adapt to their new surroundings.[1]
Over the following centuries, Coruscant's position along various major new trade lanes enabled Galactic City to become a vital hub in galactic culture, education, finance, fine arts, politics and technology. As such, increasing numbers of alien species migrated to Galactic City, resulting in continued to grow upward growth of the city.[16] Even as Galactic City fell under the rule of various empires, Dictatorships, and democracies,[44] the city only continued to rapidly grow.[1] However, as the older levels of the city were slowly buried under thousands of duracrete levels, a fierce weather microclimate began to form and structures began to rot as a result of neglect. Poverty and homelessness soon took hold of the lower levels, and the neglect from the newer levels let criminal activity of all kinds flourish in what became known as the "Coruscant Underworld".[1]
Republic City
Old Republic Era
In 20,000 BBY,[45]
The Old Republic (logo pictured) established Galactic City as it's capital city
a group of Core World planets, including Coruscant, founded the Galactic Republic. Despite ecumenopolises such as Troithe rivaling Coruscant for the position of republic capital, Galactic City eventually outpaced it's rival ecumenopolises in industrial output,[46] leading to the city becoming the fledgling republic's capital city. Despite many citizens of the City believing the city's new position in the Republic would improve conditions in the Lower levels of the city, the contrary instead happened as millions of immigrants moved to Galactic City seeking a better life, only to instead find themselves forced into the underworld, increasing the already-hellish conditions that already existed there. Violence and crime in the underworld soon reached new heights, and Galactic City's government, fearing gang incursions from the underworld, installed security measures such as blast doors and security checkpoints to keep increasingly divergent species apart. Soon, Galaxy-spanning criminal organizations such as Black Sun arrived to the lower levels of the city, quickly gaining large influences over the underworld.[1]
In stark contrast to the worsening conditions of the underworld, the residents of the upper levels of Galactic City thrived from it's position as republic capital and a hub for culture, education, finance, fine arts, politics and technology. Unlike the underworld, the upper atmosphere was cleaned and checked for imperfections daily,[3] and plenty of Foodstuffs were imported daily with costs offset by the ecumenopolis' position as galactic capital. As such, much of the residents in the city's upper levels were of wealth or status or in the middle class.[1]
Fall of the Old Republic
Early in the era of the Old Republic, an order of light side force wielders known as the Jedi Order became the peacekeepers with the Republic.[47] However, one rogue Jedi rejected the teachings of the Jedi, and embraced the ways of the dark side of the Force, founding the Sith Order[48] and beginning the Hundred-Year Darkness,[49] which eventually came to an end when the First Sith Empire invaded the planet Empress Teta, beginning the Great Hyperspace War, the first conflict of the Sith Wars.[41]
The Sith Order built a shrine atop the sacred spire (scared spire, pictured), which dominated Galactic City's skyline
In one of the subsequent Sith Wars, the Sith Order conquered Galactic City, forcing republic forces and the Jedi off Coruscant. During the Sith occupation, a shrine was built atop the mountain known as the sacred sacred spire to local religious groups,[16] a power Light Side vergence which the Sith hoped to corrupt to the dark side. Eventually, the sith succeeded in the conversion, and the shrine stood in defiance to the rest of Galactic City until Republic forces retook the city and the Jedi razed the shrine,[50] with Four Jedi Masters building a small Jedi Shrine[16] in the Sith shrine's place as a symbolic attempt to bury the legacy of the Sith over Galactic City.[50]
Around 1300 BBY,[45] an asteroid hit the homeworld of the B'ankora species. In the aftermath, the remaining members of the species were temporarily relocated to a then-undeveloped part of Galactic City that was terraformed into a small artificial habitat, with the small rectangle eventually become known as the B'ankor Refuge.[7]
As time passed, Galactic City continued to grow upward, burying the remains of the Sith shrine while the small Jedi temple above it evolved into the Jedi Grand Temple,[13] becoming the headquarters and home of the Jedi Order.[51] Simultaneously however, the Old Republic began to stagnate and decline, while the Jedi found themselves embroiled in a conflict against the Mandalorians[52] and a resurgent Sith Empire known as the "Brotherhood of Darkness" began to expand.[53]
the Mandalorian ruling houses known as House Vizla sacked the Jedi Temple and stole the Darksaber
As a result of the brewing conflicts, members of the Mandalorian ruling houses known as House Vizsla sacked the Jedi grand temple and stole the Darksaber from the Jedi Order. Soon after, war with the Brotherhood of Darkness broke out,[53] during which the Sith once again conquered Galactic City. Eventually, Republic forces and Jedi Galactic City liberated Galactic City from the rule of the Brotherhood of Darkness,[27] and went on to drive the Sith to what the Jedi believed to be extinction, bringing the Jedi-Sith war to an end.[54] Secretly however, the sith secretly survived under the Rule of Two under the wisdom of Darth Bane.[55] Soon after the war around 1032 BBY,[56] the Old Republic was transformed into modern Galactic Republic under the Galactic Constitution,[27] with a member of House Valorum, Tarsus Valorum, serving as the first Supreme Chancellor of the modern Republic.[13] Under the guidance of of Tarsus, the Republic Military was disbanded in favor of the Jedi Order[57] and Judicial Department, with both organizations eventually being headquartered in Galactic City.[3] Additionally, a pan-galactic senate was formed,[13] in which senators from across the Galaxy met to discuss Republic policy at a building part of the newly built Senate Plaza in Galactic City's Federal District.[3]
High Republic Era
Twilight of the Republic
Crime and Corruption
- "Before the outbreak of war, the twilight of the Republic was an era of distractions, with citizens from all walks of life following escapist pursuits. Historians rebuke the people of this last age for being taken in by such circuses when their attentions should have been focused on the malfeasances and corruption in the Senate and other governing institutions."
- ―Janyor
Senator Larik (pictured) gradually sold off Raxus Secundus, the world he represented, to mining companies from his residence in Galactic City
As the High Republic Era came to an end, the Galactic Republic began to fall into decline as senators, Bureaucrats, and politicans alike increasing fell under the influence of large corporations such the Trade Federation.[31] These corporations slowly gained a large influence in the Republic Government, often paying and bribing Bureaucrats and Senators to vote and pass legislation is their favor on both a galactic and planetary scale. In one instance, the senator for Raxus Secundus, Larik, began selling off his homeworld to mining companies from his residence in Galactic City.[58] As large corporations gained a foothold over the republic's senators, the Galactic Senate gradually devolved into an ineffective and bureaucratic legislative body that served the interests of corporations rather than people,[31] with some companies like the InterGalactic Banking Clan even eventually gaining senate seats,[59] further fueling the Republic's decline.[31] Despite this, the Jedi Order continued to serve the Republic from the Jedi Grand Temple, though their position as keepers of the peace gradually shifted from protectors of the people to enforcers of the increasingly corrupt senate's will.[58] Around that time, Supreme Chancellor Chasen Piian donated the B'ankor Refuge, an artificial habitat in Galactic City where the surviving B'ankora had been living since a cataclysm occurred on their homeworld[7] in 1300 BBY,[45] to the sole survivors of the cataclysm.[7]
Ziro (pictured) operated his branch of the Hutt Cartel out of Galactic City
However, politicans did not just find themselves under the influence of large corporations, but criminal organizations as well. Ziro Desilijic Tiure, a Hutt from the planet Sleheyron,[60] came to Galactic City, and began operating his criminal organization out of a nightclub in the city's Old downtown area.[21] With the Galactic Senate growubg corrupt, the Hutt Cartel began lining the reelection coffers of senators from the Outer Rim Territories who favored Hutt operations on the worlds they were representing and as such, Ziro's palace became the place for the Hutt Cartel and the senators under their influence to make connections, making Ziro very well connected with many republic senators in the city.[61]
Tanivos Exantor Divo (pictured) grew up on Level 3215 of Galactic City where he witnessed many crimes, fueling his rigid sense of justice and fairness
During this time, Tanivos Exantor Divo was born on Level 3215 of Galactic City to a family that had been involved in law enforcement for fourteen generations. As he grew up in Gavas-Eclat, a neighborhood populated by working class families filled with reduced-capacity industrial areas and lower-class apartment complexes, Tanivos witnessed criminals shaking down the hardworking denizens, including his father, for what little credits they had. As a result of his rough childhood, Tanivos developed a rigid sense of justice and fairness and applied himself to academic studies, eventually earning a scholarship to the Federal District Police Academy at age sixteen. Continuing to study hard, Tanivos graduated the academy valedictorian, giving valedictory address to his fellow 4,500 newly-minted deputies at their graduation ceremony, telling them that their job as law enforcement was not to see the worst in people but to keep the best safe. Following his graduation, Tanivos took a job as a patrolman in the Coruscant Security Force and eventually became an Inspector with the rank of lieutenant.[61]
Mace is on the Case
- "Nearby, my towel is, if wet behind the ears, you still are."
- ―Yoda after sensing Mace Windu approaching him
Mace Windu found Yoda meditating under the great tree
After returning from a mission to the Ocean moon of Devshi[62] prior to 48 BBY,[63] Mace Windu returned to the Jedi Grand Temple in Galactic City. Following his arrival, Mace found Jedi Master Yoda meditating in under the Great Tree in the Jedi Temple training ground. Upon approaching the Jedi Master, Yoda sensed Mace approaching, and remarked that a towel he owned was nearby should the back of Mace's ears still be wet from the mission. In response, Mace remarked to Yoda that despite all the lore passed down about him, his sharp wit was always left out.[62]
Following the conversation, the two Jedi made their way to indoors and began making their way to the Jedi Temple communication center. On the way, Yoda confirmed that Mace's mission had been completed, to which Mace confirmed, adding that the Skeleton key was secured and the problematic droids he'd faced during the mission had been reset to factory settings. Following this, Yoda acknowledged Mace's success, before stating that there was a new mission for Mace, asking if he knew what Coaxium was as the pair arived at the communication center. Upon Mace confirming that he did, Yoda instructed Gara to proceed with her briefing, which she started.[62]
Mace Windu was briefed on his upcoming recovery mission to Ro Mira
Gara introduced the mostly glacial moon Ro Mira. Following this, she explained that there was a coaxium refinery underneath the moon's surface that took advantage of blue-hot lava that ran in rivers beneath the ice, where someone had developed a new and powerful variant of coaxium. Following this, Mace asked why the Jedi Order was getting involved, to which Gara responded to by explaining that the new coaxium variant allowed Sublight engines to boost to one hundred and twenty percent without exploding, which would allow Pirates and Smugglers such as the Hutts and the Pyke Syndicate to outrun the Galactic Republic's patrols, with Yoda pointing out that enemy starships would simply be too fast. Mace then asked if he would be recovering the formula, to which Yoda said he would not be, with Gara then adding that Azita Cruuz, who the republic did not have much information on, had sent out a public broadcast offering the new formula in exchange for republic credits and escort offworld, making Mace realize he would be performing a recovery mission and that speed was essential. Yoda then added that if the mission went awry, Mace should prioritize the coaxium.[62]
Soon after, Mace Windu boarded his Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor while Gara informed him that he may encounter some tough locals at the refineries, and that all information the Republic had on Cruuz had been loaded onto his droid, and that while the information was not a long read, Cruuz should not be underestimated, to which Mace stated in response that he did not underestimate anyone. Following the exchange, Windu took off and left the Jedi Grand Temple and Galactic City for his, making his way to Ro Mira,[62] where he eventually successfully recovering Azita Cruuz and a sample of the new coaxium variant.[64]

Skulking Around
- "All that skulking around the lower levels of Coruscant did me some good. This time tomorrow, I'll be a free man."
- ―Coir Cion
Between around 40 BBY and 32 BBY,[66] the Devaronian criminal Coir Cion, who ran a territory on the moon of Dawk, spent time in the lower levels of Galactic City. During his time in the Underworld, Coir Cion happened upon a finely dressed Chagrian, who unbeknownst to Coir, was the Republic Senate's Vice Chair Mas Amedda. Thinking the Amedda was a tourist that he could easily scam like the many tourists that constantly got lost in the Underworld, Coir began following Amedda, but soon realized the chagrian had business to attend to and was not a tourist. Curious as to why someone who appeared very wealthy was in the Underworld, Coir Cion continued to secretly follow Amedda, and eventually saw him meet with a pirate he knew, before seeing Amedda hand a sack to the pirate.[65]
Coir Cion secretly followed Mas Amedda to the senate district
Still unaware to Amedda identity and wanting to know what he was up to, Coir Cion continued to keep on Amedda's tail, eventually following him to the Upper Levels and to the Senate District. There, Coir witnessed Amedda meet with the "honorable" senator from Naboo Sheev Palpatine, who unknown to Coir, was the Sith Lord Darth Sidious. Seizing the opportunity in front of him, Cior fled back to his territory on the moon of Dawk, and attempted to extort Palpatine for a full pardon for his crimes so he could go legit, threatening Palpatine's that he would expose his underworld dealings and corruption if his demands weren't met.[65]
Maul's Fight
Darth Maul fought combat droids in the lower levels of Galactic City
Shortly after, Darth Maul ignited his double-bladed lightsaber and engaged in combat with several types of combat droids in the Galactic City's Underworld while Sidious, his Sith Master, continued to entrench himself in bureaucracy on the city's upper levels that kept the Galactic Republic functioning. As he engaged the droids in combat with only one blade activated, Maul deflected shots from the droids's blasters. However, one droid eventually managed to land a shot on Maul's shoulder, causing Maul to mutter in anger before deactivating his lightsaber and jumping towards the center of the droid formation as shots continued to come towards him. Soon landing in the middle, Maul force pushed the droids in all directions back, destroying most. However, one droid hid behind the wall and began firing at Maul, before being quickly cut down by the Sith Lord with a stroke of a lightsaber.[65]
As Maul finished off the droid, his Holoprojector activated with as his master, Darth Sidious, contacted him. As Maul turned to face the holoprojecter, Sidious asked if he'd caught his apprentice at a bad time, to which Maul responded that that was never the case before asking how he could be of service. Darth Sidious responded by ordering Maul to go to the moon of Dawk and to seek out and kill Coir Cion, adding the quest was of utmost importance. Maul then asked why Cion had to die, to which Sidious asked if rhetorically asked if Maul dared question his authority, prompting Maul to apologize to his master, to which Sidious responded that he sensed that Maul was impatient, and that he should temper that. Maul agreed, before Sidious then reminded Maul not to forget his place, to which Maul stated he would not fail his mission, with Sidious then saying that they would see.[65]
Maul's Quest
Palpatine discussed a senate bill with some individuals
After his conversation with his master, Maul made his way to the moon of Dawk, where he easily dispatched of a squad sent by Coir Cion to kill him, before beginning to make his way to Coir Cion. Simultaneously in Galactic City, two individuals met with Palpatine. During their meeting one of the individuals stating that their bill really needed to be brought before the senate floor. The other individual, adding that they would arrange a time to discuss the bill with Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum. In response, Palpatine said that he did not recommend brining the bill up for a vote yet, to which the second individual made sure that Palpatine understood their concerns, to which Palpatine assured them that he did. Palpatine then expanded on his point, stating that it was not a good idea to bother the very busy chancellor with a bill that they were not sure would pass as they didn't want to be seen as wasting the chancellor's time. Palpatine then further suggested that that the couple go meet the senator of Kuat and senator of Ord Mantell, who had been the strongest holdouts against the bill. The two then left the office, thanking Palpatine for his counsel, to which Palpatine said it was his pleasure.[65]
As the door closed, Palpatine then made contact with Coir Cion on his holoprojector, with the criminal telling the senator that he had three rotations to get himself a pardon, or he would reveal the corruption. The communication then ended, with Palpatine force pushing the holoprojector into the wall, breaking the projector as he stated that the criminal would not have the chance. Simultaneously, Maul, having arrived at Cior's hideout and having dispatched of the criminal's associates, Maul confronted Cior as to what he had done. Cior quickly cracked, telling Maul of what he had seen during his time of Galactic City. Shortly after Cior finished, Sidious contacted Maul, asking if he had killed Cior, prompting Maul to strike down the criminal, completing his task, before making his way back to Galactic City.[65]
Darth Maul left his meeting with his master with a new mission to complete
After returning to Galactic City, Maul approached his master atop a balcony, thinking to himself that he could not sense his master, and that Sidious's dueling identities was exhausting, though necessary to ensure the return of the Sith. Suddenly, Sidious approached Maul from behind, prompting Maul to inform his master that his task was complete. Sidious praised Maul for doing so, before questioning Maul as to why he had hesitated in taking Cior's life. Maul responded that he was curious as to why somebody like Cior was a threat, to which Sidious responded that he wasn't threatened and told Maul that he was repeatedly involving himself with things he should not be and that he still had much to learn. Sidious then handed Maul a holoprojector with his next mission, with Sidious telling Maul not to hesitate as his apprentice walked off.[65]
City of Metal
By 37 BBY,[67] a conflict on the arboreal planet Bri'n began as the Metal Clan attempted to gain permission to cut down trees by either obtaining blood of the Priestess of Wood or by forcefully getting her word. Later, the Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn was dispatched to the conflict to attempt to negotiate a resolution, but the negotiations quickly fell through, forcing Qui-Gon and the current Priestess of Wood, Th'er, to flee the planet and travel to Galactic City in an Eta-class shuttle with the help of Qui-Gon's padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi, stopping the Metal Clan from obtaining legal permission to cut down trees.[30]
Th'er was disagreed with the decision to go to Galactic City
Upon arriving in Galactic City aboard the Eta-class shuttle, Th'er, who had protested leaving the planet, called the described the city as an metallic abomination, asking Qui-Gon why they had come to the city. Qui-Gon responded that the she would be safe in the city for the time being, causing the mistress to state that she would only be safe if all members of the Metal Clan were dead, asking Qui-Gon to kill them all with his lightsaber, causing Qui-Gon to tell her that it was not the Jedi way. Qui-Gon's response angered the priestess, who angrily pointed out that the Jedi had chose to side with her, to which Qui-Gon stated that he had defended the her life. This only further enraged Th'er, who stated that the jedi were called great warriors, yet they were running from a fight like cowards.[30]
Qui-Gon looked at the sunset over Galactic City from a balcony on the Jedi Grand Temple
Later at the Jedi Grand Temple, Qui-Gon stood on a balcony and looked out at the sunset over Galactic City. As he did so, Jedi Master Yoda approached him, asking Qui-Gon for his report on the mission on behalf of the Jedi High Council. In response, Qui-Gon faced Yoda, and questioned why Yoda had really come to him, as Obi-Wan had been diligent in filing reports himself, to which Yoda responded that he had actually come because he had sensed great turmoil in Qui-Gon that had been around for a while. Following Yoda's words, Qui-Gon sat on a bench and began explaining that the words of the Priestess of Wood from the mission he had just returned from had confirmed some of his longstanding concerns. However Yoda cut Qui-Gon off to assure the master that he wasn't a coward, to which Qui-Gon responded that it wasn't being called a coward that concerned him, but rather being called a great warrior. Continuing, Qui-Gon explained that he felt that even in Galactic City, the Jedi Order were seen as soldiers and servants to politicians, with little mention of the The Force, to which Yoda responded that the Force was mysterious and unknown to many, with it's users often being misunderstood. In response, Qui-Gon continued that the actions of the Jedi were a reflection of their purpose, and that part of problem was possibly the Jedi High Council residing in the Galactic Republic's Capital, where they were used as a weapons of the Republic or even by themselves. Yoda responded that the council would not agree with Qui-Gon's point, to which Qui-Gon that either with himself or with the council, a loss of vision had occurred. Yoda then offered some wisdom that when they had questions, they should seek deeper answers from the Force, to which Qui-Gon stated they both agreed on that point, and that Galactic City was not the place to seek such answers.
Shortly after his conversation with Yoda, Qui-Gon walked with his astromech droid to his Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor, which he and his droid boarded. Once inside the cockpit, Qui-Gon closed his eyes followed the force by taking off and leaving Galactic City, before traveling through hyperspace to a charted but undesignated world, where he encountered a vision on the balance between the light and dark.[30]
Th'er spent her time on Coruscant in one of Galactic City's parks
Upon his return to Galactic City, Qui-Gon found Th'er in a park, where she had been trying to enjoy the little nature that existed in Galactic City. Upon greeting Qui-Gon approaching her, Th'er explained what she was doing to the Jedi, who then told her that there were better places to visit in the city during her stay, explaining that the Metal Clan had recruited powerful offworld allies, and that she had to do the same if her trees were to survive. Th'er responded that any allies would just strip their resources, to which Qui-Gon stated that enriching her people did not mean ruining their way of life if she could find balance, adding that Galactic City, despite how she saw it as a city of metal, had people and wisdom from many worlds that could be her allies. In response, Th'er agreed to meet Qui-Gon's 'allies'.[30]
Qui-Gon and Yoda looked at Galactic City's skyline
At night, Yoda, sitting on a bench near Qui-Gon, asked if he had found any answers. Qui-Gon responded that he had, though like many instances with the force, it just lead to more questions. Yoda responded as Qui-Gon sat on the bench next to him that questions were good, as certainty in understanding leads to arrogance and the dark side. However, Qui-Gon responded that being to rigid was also a risk, using a unbending tree snapping under wind pressure as an example.Yoda responded that the dark side was an ever-present threat and the order should not bend to it, to which Qui-Gon agreed, adding that the dark side consumed and there would be no balance in that path, before asking what their purpose would be without balance as the two Jedi Masters sat and looked out over Galactic City's skyline.[30]
Jango's Hunt
By 33 BBY,[68] Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum found his administration embarrassed multiple times. That same year, in an attempt to score a win for his administration, Valorum attempted to end the Anselmi–Nautolan war via a treaty between the two species to end the war, authorizing the release of the statue known as the "Hope of Glee Anselm" from the Republic Museum. However, during the ceremony treaty on Jaloria, the statue was stolen by an unknown group of thieves. As a result, the head diplomats involved in the event including Tok, Fiarok, and an Anselmi representative, not wanting the Jedi Order involved due to Kit Fisto being a member of the order, contacted the Bounty Hunter Jango Fett to recover the Hope of Glee Anselm.[69]
Jango Fett walked through level 1313
After searching Ord Mantell and Nar Shaddaa, Jango eventually made his way to Level 1313 of Galactic City. Upon arriving, Jango looked down upon a street of the level, before three Trandoshans, noticing Jango's expensive-looking Mandalorian armor, pulled out knives and threatened Jango to pay a "toll". In response, Jango gave the trandoshans a warning to leave him alone and go home, to which one of the trandoshans stated that they would not follow jango's advice and would instead gut him like a Colo claw fish. Jango, however, easily dispatched of the trandoshans before tossing one of them onto a crashed airspeeder, and shoving the other two down onto the street below, where a kid proceeded to search one of them. Jango then made his way down to the street and made his way to a building while passing the bodies of the trandoshans he killed.[70]
Jango Fett found a group of Andelemi the same info broker he was searching for
Upon arriving at his destination, Jango found the boarded door broke open, and entered to find a group of Anselemi cornering the same information broker he was looking for. Upon Jango's entrance, and Anselemi told the bounty hunter that he should not have come, as the Hope of Glee Anselm rightfully belonged to the Anselemi, adding that the theft was a declaration of war as the group of Anselemi turned to aim at the bounty hunter. Jango then interrupted the Anselemi's speech to tell them that he did not care about their politics, and that he had been hired to do a job and they were in his way. The Anselemi then laughed at the bounty hunter, telling Jango that he was already a dead man as he was interfering with a secret operation and as such could not leave any witnesses behind. Jango then acknowledged the fact nobody knew they were there, prompting the information broker to hide behind some crates as Fett launched a Whistling bird from his armor, which promptly killed the entire group of Anselemi, with Jango then thanking the Anselemi for standing conveniently close together.[70]
Jango Fett took a viewscreen from the info broker
After dispatching of the Anselemi, Fett then approached the information broker, who briefly exclaimed about their office before Fett then stated that the darts costed him a lot of money and that broker was to give him information to pay off the debt. Fett then explained that he had been chasing every smuggler from Ord Mantell to Nar Shaddaa, and none had been approached to move the statue as the thief went off the scopes, so he had come to there as the broker was considered the best in the sector. The broker then asked Fett if he would believe that they did not know what he was talking about, before being met with silence from the bounty hunter. The broker then caved, stating that they would only help because of the flattery and not because of Fett's death threat, before explaining that the theft had the republic on edge, and that war was about to break out once again between the Anselmi and the Nautolans. The broker then continued, stating that a war would be a massive humiliation for Valorum after he had lead the peace talks and his administration could not survive another, making them curious. The broker then showed a recording reflected off a comm satellite, which they explained was the only ship to leave Jaloria after the ports shut down, but they had not been able to identify the ship yet as there was no transponder record on any log. Fett then took the Viewscreen from the broker to their protest, before Fett stated that the broker should consider it a fair trade for having their life saved. In response, the broker responded that was why everyone called Fett varactyl vomit, to which Fett responded that varactyls were majestic creatures and nothing were wrong with them as he walked outside.[70]
Aurra Sing watched Jango return to his ship
As Fett made his way back to his ship, Aurra Sing, in the custody of a supposed Judicial by the name of Huijari, aimed her sniper at Fett from a rooftop. As she did, Huijari reminded Sing not to take the kill shot, reminding Sing that the conditions for her release was to follow his orders. Sing then shot a Homing beacon on Jango's ship as it took off, before telling Huijari what she was doing.[70]
Finis Valorum's administration was once again greatly embarrassed
Eventually, Fett tracked down one of the last surviving supposed thieves by the name of Nakano Lash on the mining planet of Roxuli, and discovered that the robbers had been forced to carry out the robbery with a bomb strapped to them. Additionally, Aura Sing realized that Huijari was not a Judicial, and reunited with Fett.[71] The group then realized that they had all been set up by Fiarok, who had also taken the hope of Glee Anselm for himself, which Fett exposed to Governor Tok on Jaloria resulting in the representative's prompt arrest, and the war continuing between the Anselmi and Nautolans. The droid reporter Arex-Fivesix reported on the arrest a few hours later, making the news public and resulting in another embarrassment for the Valorum chancellorship. Upon learning of the news, Valorum thought deeply while sitting in his office in Galactic City.[72]
The Naboo Crisis
Naboo Blockaded
The Trade Fedeation blockaded Naboo in protest off Senate Bill "proposition 31-814D" (Pro-Prop 31-814D poster pictured)
In 32 BBY,[73] the Trade Federation blockaded the Mid-Rim planet Naboo in the Chommell sector with a fleet of illegally modified Lucrehulk-class LH-3210 cargo freighters. Publicly,[31] the Federation stated they had began the blockade in protest of Prop 31-814D,[59] a heavily contested Senate bill[74] which narrowly passed the senate the previous year[59] which made Free Trade Zones, including those used by the Federation, eligible for taxation. Secretly however, Viceroy of the Trade Federation Nute Gunray was in league with the Sith Lord Darth Sidious,[31] who orchestrated much of the crisis to allow his public persona as Naboo senator Sheev Palpatine to gain political sympathy through his people's suffering.[75]
Hearing of the blockade in Galactic City, Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum dispatched two Jedi Knights, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, along with several members of the Judicial Forces, aboard the Consular-class light cruiser Radiant VII from to negotiate lifting the blockade over Naboo. However, upon the ambassadors' arrival upon the flagship Saak'ak, the Jedi were attacked who promptly fled to Naboo as the federation began to occupy the planet. Shortly after the Capture of Theed, the Jedi Knights, along with the local Gungan outcast Jar Jar Binks, freed the Monarch of Naboo, Queen Amidala, from the federation's capture, before escaping the planet and blockade aboard the Naboo Royal Starship with the intent to travel to Coruscant, though suffering damage to the starship's the hyperdrive in the process. Following the escape, the Federation informed Sidious of the group's escape, to which Sidious responded by dispatching from Galactic City Darth Maul to track down the group.[31]
In Galactic City, Darth Sidious dispatched his apprentice, Maul, to hunt down the fleeing Naboo government
Forced to stop for repairs, the group travelled to the planet Tatooine to purchase a new hyperdrive. While searching for a store in Mos Espa, the group met the young Anakin Skywalker, who had been enslaved to the Toydarian Watto and offered to Podrace in the upcoming Boonta Eve Classic to raise the required funds. Before the race, Jinn also discovered Skywalker was Force-sensitive and made a bet with Watto to free the boy, hoping to see him trained as a Jedi. Soon after Skywalker won the race and his freedom, as the group made their way back to the ship, Maul intercepted the group, revealing the survival of the Sith to the Jedi. After a brief skirmish, the group escaped Maul's clutches and made the hyperspace jump to Coruscant.[31]
Enter the bureaucrats
- "Enter the bureaucrats, the true rulers of the Republic—and on the payroll of the Trade Federation, I might add. This is where Chancellor Valorum's strength will disappear."
- ―Sheev Palpatine to Padmé Amidala, convincing her to call a Vote of No Confidence in Chancellor Valorum
the Naboo Royal Starship landed on a Senate landing platform in Galactic City
Upon the Naboo Royal Starship's arrival to Coruscant, the starship's pilot, Ric Olié, explained to Anakin how the planet surface was an ecumenopolis, a city-planet, before piloting the ship to a senate landing platform in Galactic City's Federal District. Upon the ship landing, the group onboard was greeted by Naboo's senator Sheev Palpatine and Supreme Chancellor Finis Valorum, who shared that he had called an Special session of the Galactic Senate to hear Queen Padmé Amidala's position on the crisis. Following this, Palpatine, along with the Queen of Naboo Padmé Amidala, Jar Jar Binks, and Anakin, boarded an Airspeeder to 500 Republica, while Qui-Gon Jinn informed Valorum that he wished to speak with the Jedi Council immediately.[31]
Senator Palpatine and Queen Amidala discussed the upcoming senate meeting
Upon their arrival to Palpatine's apartment, Padme and Palpatine began to discuss how force the senate into action against the Trade Federation. During the conversation, Palpatine attempted to convince Padme that the Galactic Republic was not what it once was, with Senators more interested in benefiting themselves rather than the common good, which would make senate action on the Naboo blockade unlikely. Not fully convinced, Padme stated that Supreme Chancellor Valorum seemed to believe action was possible, which Palpatine quickly shot down by accusing Amidala of corruption and suggesting that Padme should push for for a Vote of No Confidence in the supreme chancellor, and stating the only other possibility of action would be to submit a plea to the Republic courts, which Padme pointed out would only take longer.[31]
The delegates of the Trade Federation attempted to object to Senator Palpatine's statements
Soon after, the Special session of the Senate began at the Senate Building, with the Supreme Chancellor first recognizing the Naboo delegation. Palpatine began by sharing the situation and context of the Trade Federation's occupation of Naboo. However, the delegates of the Trade Federation, including Lott Dod, quickly attempted to object to Palpatine's statments, though the Federation's senator was forced to cease as they were not recognized. Immediately after, Palpatine invited Queen Amidala to speak on his behalf, who began to give a speech to the Senate about the situation. However, at the queen's mention of the invasion, the Trade Federation delegates once again objected, stating there was no proof and instead recommended a senate commission be established instead to verify the validity of Queen Amidala's claims, which Malastare delegation quickly concurred with the Trade Federation's delegate. Before Chancellor Valorum could respond,[31] Vice Chair Mas Amedda[76] began to whisper a suggestion to Valorum, which Palpatine used to his advantage to convince Amidala that Valorum and his aides were corrupt.[31]
Queen Amidala called for a vote of no confidence in Supreme Chancellor Valorum
When Amedda finished whispering to Valorum, Valorum conceded the Trade Federation's point, asking if the Naboo delegation would defer the motion to allow a commission to investigate their delegation's claims. Amidala did not defer the motion, stating that she was not elected to watch her people suffer, and came before the senate to end the crisis. Continuing, she stated that given the senate was not capable of action, she believed new leadership was needed, moving for a Vote of No Confidence in Supreme Chancellor Valorum. In response, much of the senate delegations responded in yelled and acted in support, including a delegation of Wookiees, a delegation of Swokes Swokes, a delegation of Asogians[31] including senator Grebleips,[77] as well as a delegation of Twi'leks from Ryloth including Orn Free Taa. Vice Chair Mas Amedda attempted to call the senate chambers to order as the uproar in support continued, with Palpatine stating to Amidala that the senate would now elect a new chancellor who would actually help deal with the crisis.[31]
Eventually, the Vote of No Confidence passed, beginning a Supreme Chancellor election. Soon after, Palpatine was nominated as a candidate for the position of Supreme Chancellor, though he faced opponents such as Bail Antilles of Alderaan and Ainlee Teem of Malastare. Despite the positive development, Queen Amidala still decided to return to Naboo before the end of the election, as she felt she couldn't wait longer as her people were suffering.[31]
Memories
Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi reported to the Jedi High Council
Simultaneously, across Galactic City's Federal District at Jedi Temple, Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi came before the Jedi High Council. During the meeting, Qui-Gon shared of his duel with a stranger on Tatooine who had been trained in the Jedi arts, which had led to Qui-Gon's suspicion that the stranger was a member of the Sith Order, who the Jedi Order had believed were extinct for a millennium. In response to Qui-Gon's suspicion, Council Member Mace Windu shared his doubts about the return of the sith without the Jedi Order's knowledge, to which Jedi Master Yoda responded to by stating how the Dark side of the Force was hard to see. As Obi-Wan began to leave the Council Chambers, Yoda sensed Qui-Gon had more to say. Left prompted, Qui-Gon shared his discovery of the young Anakin Skywalker, who due to his mysterious conception and high Midi-chlorian count, Qui-Gon believed to be the Chosen One. With his opinion revealed, Qui-Gon requested that Anakin be tested, and possibly trained as a Jedi.[31]
Dooku deleted the planet Kamino from the Jedi Archives
Soon after, disgruntled Jedi Master Dooku, on orders from Darth Sidious, whom he had secretly been in contact with, wiped the planet Kamino from the Jedi Archives to stop the Jedi learning of a secret Clone Army ordered by Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, which Darth Sidious secretly intended to use the army to further his own goals. Upon Dooku's exit from the Jedi Library, he briefly conversed with Chief Librarian Jocasta Nu, who told him of his old padawan Qui-Gon Jinn's claim of encountering a Sith lord.[31]
Not too long after, Dooku ran into Qui-Gon, who had been discussing the possible return of the Sith with Jedi Master Yaddle. Dooku briefly questioned Qui-Gon about the Sith Lord before reminding Qui-Gon that he would no longer be there to protect him, to which Qui-Gon responded that Obi-Wan now filled that role. Following that comment, Dooku remarked that he would like to one day meet Obi-Wan, as Qui-Gon always sang his praises. Soon After, Qui-Gon walked off, leaving Yaddle and Dooku togther. Sensing uneasiness, Yaddle asked Dooku if he was alright, to which he remarked how padawans like Qui-Gon once was grew up so fast.[78]
Fate of the Chosen One
Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi watched the sunset over Galactic City
Before Anakin Skywalker went before the Jedi High Council, he briefly went to Amidala's chambers in search of the queen's Handmaiden Naberrie, whom Skywalker had previously met on Tatooine. However, when he could not find her, the queen, who was present, promised to pass on his message. Unbeknownst to Skywalker, however, the Queen was in fact the handmaiden Skywalker had previously met.[31] Shortly afterward, Anakin was brought to the Jedi Grand Temple, where he waited in one of the Council Towers of the temple, looking out the window at Galactic City. As Anakin began to look down at his hands, Qui-Gon Jinn came to bring Anakin to the Jedi High Council, telling Anakin that it was time.[79] After doing so, Qui-Gon Jinn and his padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi walked onto a balcony of the Jedi Temple as sunset began over Galactic City's Federal District. While doing so, Obi-Wan stated that he believed Skywalker would be too old and would not be trained as a Jedi. In response, Qui-Gon stated that Skywalker would be trained as a Jedi. Even as Obi-Wan reminded Qui-Gon that he shouldn't defy the council and that's why he wasn't currently on it, Qui-Gon simply remarked that Obi-Wan still had much to learn, as the pair both watched Coruscant's sun set over Galactic City.[31]
the Jedi High Council tested Anakin Skywalker
Simultaneously, the Jedi Council tested the young Anakin Skywalker, making him state what objects he saw through the Force which were displayed on a Viewscreen only viewable to the Jedi Masters on the council. When Mace Windu finished with the test, he looked over to Yoda, who proceeded to question Skywalker on how he felt. Skywalker responded that he was cold, to which Ki-Adi-Mundi discovered that Skywalker's thoughts dwelled on his mother, whom Skywalker had to leave behind on Tatooine. Skywalker agreed with Ki-Adi-Mundi, saying that he missed his mother, which prompted Yoda to question if Skywalker was afraid to lose her. Anakin, nervous, asked what that had to do with the test, to which Yoda remarked how it was relevant to everything, as the Jedi Order believed fear led to anger, anger lead to hate, and hate led to the Dark side of the Force.[31]
The Jedi High Council informed Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan that Anakin would not be trained as a Jedi
Following this, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon were once again summoned to the council chambers. There, the Jedi High Council informed Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan that Anakin was not to be trained as a Jedi as Anakin was too old, and his future was shrouded in mystery. Qui-Gon, annoyed with the High Council's decision, declared that he would take on Anakin as an apprentice. In response, Master Yoda reminded Qui-Gon that he already had an apprentice in Obi-Wan, and the Jedi Code forbid a second apprentice. Qui-Gon responded by declaring that Obi-Wan was ready for the Jedi Trials, which Yoda retorted by stating that it was for the council to decide who is ready. Seeing no reason for the conversation to continue, Mace Windu said that it was not the time for the debate, and Anakin's future was to be decided later. In the meantime, Mace ordered Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan to return to Naboo with Queen Amidala, who had decided to return to Naboo help deal with the Trade Federation's occupation, as their support could draw out the Sith Lord the Qui-Gon had previously encountered.[31]
Battles
Jar Jar Binks told Anakin that he had a big heart
Shortly after the meeting with the Jedi High Council, Anakin told Jar Jar Binks how the council wouldn't let Qui-Gon train him yet and that he wasn't sure if he would ever be a Jedi. Trying to comfort Anakin, Jar Jar how many Gungans like himself miss their family, and everybody will sometimes be scared or worried about themselves, their friends, or other people, but that was the sign of a good heart, before telling that Anakin he had one.[80]
Jar Jar Binks cheered as Queen Amidala prepare to return and liberate Naboo
Shortly afterward, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, on orders from the Jedi High Council, prepared to accompany Queen Amidala, along with the original group that had come to Galactic City, back to Naboo.[31] As the group prepared to leave on the landing platform, Anakin told R2-D2 that they were going back to Naboo. When R2-D2 asked why (in binary), Anakin said it was a "secret mission" and could not share. As Anakin finished, he overheard Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon argue over him, with Obi-Wan stating that Anakin was dangerous and that the Jedi Council all sensed it, asking Qui-Gon why he did not. In response, Qui-Gon stated that Anakin's fate was uncertain and was not dangerous, adding that the Jedi Council would decide Anakin's fate and that should be enough, before telling Obi-Wan to board the starship as Anakin looked on fearfully.[80] as the group began to board, Jar Jar Binks cheered in excited to return home.[31]
Qui-Gon Jinn (pictured) died during the Battle of Naboo
During the group's travel back to Naboo, Sheev Palpatine remained in Galactic City[31] and was elected to the position of Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic by the Galactic Senate.[81][31] Upon Queen Amidala arrival to Naboo, she and her allies tracked down the Gungans, who had a damaged relationship with the Naboo, but also had been forced from their home by the Trade Federation. Once she found Gungans, Amidala revealed herself to Gungan leader Rugor Nass, and made an agreement to help each other liberate Naboo. The resulting battle saw Royal Naboo Security Forces fought alongside the Gungan Grand Army, liberating Naboo, destroying the Federation's Flagship Saak'ak, and the capturing the Trade Federation Viceroy Nute Gunray, who had barricaded himself in Theed's Royal Palace. Early in the battle however, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan once again encountered the Sith Lord Maul, and proceeded to duel him in Theed's power generator. Eventually, Darth Maul was seemingly killed after being cut in half and dropped down a pit at the hands of Obi-Wan, though not before the sith lord took the life of Qui-Gon Jinn, who's final wish was for Anakin to be trained.[31]
Duel for Dooku
Yaddle found Dooku staring at the Great Tree
Back in Galactic City's Jedi Grand Temple, Dooku, having learned of the death of old padawan Qui-Gon, found himself staring upon the Great Tree, something that had always deeply fascinated Qui-Gon while Dooku had been his Jedi Master. While Dooku was deep in thought, Jedi Master Yaddle, having stepped down from her position on the Jedi High Council, found Dooku and asked if he would attend his old padawan's funeral like the Jedi High Council, to which Dooku responded he would not be as he did not feel he would be welcome. Finding the exchange odd, Yaddle followed Dooku, who not knowing Yaddle was following him, made his way to the LiMerge Power building, an abandoned building used by Darth Sidious in an abandoned part of Galactic City's Industrial District known as The Works.[78]
Dooku and Yaddle engaged in a duel at the LiMerge Power building in the Works
Upon his arrival to the building's hangar, Dooku confronted Sidious about the death of Qui-Gon, feeling the Sith Lord was responsible for his padawan's death. Sidious, unfazed, simply remarked that they had both lost apprentice. As Dooku continued to confront Sidious, Yaddle eventually revealed herself, hoping to use Dooku's conflict to return him to the light. Instead however, Dooku gave himself to the Dark side of the Force, engaging in a short duel with Yaddle. Yaddle was eventually bested by Dooku, with Yaddle collapsing on the floor. Staring up at Dooku, Yaddle told him that so many people have already died for what he called "peace". Unfazed, Dooku simply stated he would give the Yaddle "peace", striking down the Master Jedi with his lightsaber. Following this, Dooku pledged himself Sidious, who dubbed his new apprentice "Darth Tyrannus".[78]

The Separatist Crisis
Mounting tensions
Kas unloDos's "2,000 Senators", a propaganda poster that pushed the Separatist Cause by depicting Galactic City's senate building and characterizing Republic senators as uncaring
In 24 BBY,[82] Count of Serenno and former Jedi Dooku, who had secretly become the Sith apprentice to Darth Sidious, publicly denounced the Galactic Republic as a corrupt and futile enterprise that favored the Core Worlds in what became known as the "Raxus Address". The Count's address appealed an already-growing separatist movement, and spurred the creation of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, with many member star systems and worlds opting to secede from the Republic to join the new Separatist Alliance, beginning the Separatist Crisis.[59]
With great separatist rhetoric on planet Ukio, representatives of the Abrion sector seceded from the Galactic Republic citing neglect from the senators in Galactic City. An artist from Ukio, Kas unloDos, captured the separatist rhetoric in her propaganda poster "2,000 Senators", which depicted Galactic City's Senate Building along with a caption that blasted Republic Senators for being uncaring.[27]
As more and more systems began seceding from the Republic, the tension and chaos could be seen within Galactic City. Many Republic loyalists found themselves now Refugees fleeing to Galactic City, while in turn, many Separatists made their way out of Galactic City, opting to return to their now-independent homeworlds. As the crisis continued, the traffic of refugees in Galactic City's spaceports became so large that the two spaceports in the City's Port District, the Coruscant Eastern Spaceport and the Western spaceport, saw an uptick of six thousand percent during the crisis, the busiest period of service ever for both spaceports. The high traffic through Galactic City's spaceports of many different species inevitably lead to increased tensions in the Port District, with port authorities often having to settle disputes between Wookiees and Trandoshans, and brawls, such as a brawl between immigrants of the Weequay and Houk species, were known to break out in the district.[2]
In response to the mounting pressure of the Separatist Crisis and what some senators saw as a threat in the creation of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, Senators in the Galactic Senate began calls to restore the Republic Military, spurring the proposal of the Military Creation Act. Over the next year, some senators such as Naboo's senator Padmé Amidala worked had to oppose the Military Creation Act.[10] Around the same time, some of the bill's opponents also becoming members of Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine's newly created Loyalist Committee.[3]
Attempting Amidala's Assassination
A fiery start
Upon it's occupants attempting to disembark, Amidala's J-type diplomatic barge exploded
In 22 BBY, Senator Padmé Amidala travelled to Galactic City to vote on the Military Creation Act. Suspecting danger, the J-type diplomatic barge Amidala normally travelled on was escorted by multiple N-1 starfighters, though to ensure her safety further, Amidala piloted one of the N-1 starfighters rather than traveling aboard her diplomatic barge as she normally did. Upon the squadron's decent into Coruscant, they made their way to a Senate landing platform Galactic City's Federal District. Upon the ships' arrival, Captain of the Royal Naboo Security Forces, Gregar Typho, remarked to a disguised Amidala that their suspicion was likely wrong, and no danger was present. However, upon Amidala's body double Cordé disembarking the diplomatic barge, explosives rigged to the Senate landing platform by Zam Wesell exploded,[10] killing all of the on board the diplomatic barge, including Versé, Cordé, and six Naboo Security Forces members including Theomet Danlé and Mett Habble.[83] The explosion was powerful enough that it destroyed the diplomatic barge and an N-1 starfighter, and sent the Astromech droid[10] R2-H7[83] flying across the landing platform. In the immediate aftermath of the bombing, Amidala rushed to Cordé's side, who apologized to Amidala for failing her, to which Amidala insisted she had not. Shortly after their exchange, Cordé passed away in Amidala's arms. As Amidala grieved the loss of Cordé, Captain Typho attempted to comfort her but insisting Cordé died in line of duty.[10]
Multiple members of the Jedi Order met with Supreme Chancellor Palpatine at his office
Soon after, members of the Jedi Order met with Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine at the Chancellor's office in the Senate Office Building. During the meeting, Palpatine informed the present Jedi that he didn't know how much longer he could stall voting on the Military Creation Act, as many Star systems were already seceding from the Galactic Republic as he did not want the Republic split in two. In response, Jedi Master Mace Windu reminded the Chancellor that the Jedi weren't soldiers, but peacekeepers, and should Palpatine's negotiations fail, there were not enough Jedi to defend the Republic. When Windu finished, Palpatine asked Yoda if he thought it would come to war, to which Yoda simply remarked that the Dark side of the Force clouded everything, making the future hard to see. However, before the conversation could continue, Dar Wac informed Palpatine via Hologram that the Loyalist Committee had arrived. Palpatine responded to the Rodian aide to send the committee in, and told the present Jedi that they would continue the conversation another time.[10]
Yoda expressed his happiness to see Padmé alive
As the Jedi Knights made their way out and the Loyalist Committee entered, Yoda remarked to senator Amidala that the attack on the landing platform was a tragedy, and expressed his happiness to see Amidala alive and well. Replying, Amidala asked the Jedi Master if he had any idea who the culprit behind the attack was, to which Mace Windu chimed in, stating that Republic Intelligence pointed to disgruntled Spice miners on Naboo's moons. Amidala, unsatisfied with the intelligence, expressed her theory that Count Dooku, leader of the Separatists, was behind the attack. Ki-Adi-Mundi replied that Dooku was a not murderer, just a political idealist, to which Mace Windu added that Dooku was once a Jedi, so it was not in his character to do such an act.
Supreme Chancellor Palpatine suggested a Jedi Knight be assigned to protect Senator Amidala
Following Windu's comment, Yoda then added that Amidala was still in danger no matter the culprit, with Palpatine then suggesting that the Jedi provide a protection detail for Amidala as extra security. Responding to the Chancellor's suggestion, Alderaan's senator Bail Organa asked if doing so was the correct corse of action, with Amidala sharing that she felt extra protection was unnecessary. Despite understanding Amidala's perspective, Palpatine pursued the idea further, suggesting that Obi-Wan Kenobi, who had helped the then-queen Amidala years prior during the Invasion of Naboo, be the one providing protection. Mace Windu then stated that Kenobi, having just returned from a border dispute on Ansion, was available, resulting in Palpatine pushing Amidala once again to accept the extra protection. Despite Amidala's lack of a response, Windu still stated that he would send Kenobi to defend the senator.[10]
Reunion
Obi-Wan Kenobi tried to calm his padawan, Anakin Skywalker, on the turbolift ride up to Padmé's Apartment
Following a mandate from the Jedi High Council that same day, Obi-Wan Kenobi and his padawan, Anakin Skywalker, arrived to the Senate apartment complex in Galactic City's Federal District to protect senator Padmé Amidala. On the Turbolift ride up to Padmé's Apartment, Obi-Wan noticed that Anakin was tense and asked him about it, claiming that the last time Anakin had been as tense was when both of them had fallen into a nest of Gundarks, only to be reminded by Anakin that only he fallen in, with Anakin having to rescue him. The two Jedi shared a quick laugh, before Obi-Wan noted how Anakin was now sweating and told his padawan to take a deep breath. Anakin did not do so, and blamed on the fact he had not seen Padmé since the Naboo Crisis that had happened 10 years beforehand.[10]
Upon their arrival to Padmé's Apartment, Anakin and Obi-Wan were greeted by Jar Jar
Upon the two Jedi arriving at Padmé's Apartment, they were greeted by an excited Jar Jar Binks, who had become a Junior Representative for the Naboo delegation since the two jedi had last met him. Jar Jar shook both of the Jedi's hands, before directing them to walk with him further into the apartment. When they did so, Jar Jar called to senator Amidala, who alongside Captain Typho, had been watching the sunset over Galactic City from her apartment's balcony. Following this, Amidala and Typho both stepped back inside where Obi-Wan then bowed to the senator, before the two exchanged formalities. As Amidala did this however, she then noticed Anakin, who, as Amidala noted, had noticeably grown since the last time they met. In response, Anakin stated that the senator, like him, had also grown, though Anakin added that he meant that the senator had grown beautiful, to which Amidala simply stated that Anakin would always be the youngling that she had met on Tatooine in her mind.[10]
The group discussed how to best go about protecting Padmé
The group then sat down at a table in the center of the apartment's living room, where Obi-Wan assured Padmé that he and Anakin would keep a low-profile presence as to not intrude on her work. Captain Typho then introduced himself and informed the Jedi that the Queen of Naboo, Jamillia, had been informed of the their assignment to protect the senator, before claiming that the situation was more serious than Padmé would admit. Amidala then responded by saying she didn't require more security, instead asking the Jedi if to discover the culprit behind the assassination attempt, to which Obi-Wan responded by stating that he and Anakin were only there to guard the senator, not to start an investigation.[10]
Despite Obi-Wan's response, Anakin tried to promise to the senator that they would find the assassin, prompting Obi-Wan to tell his padawan that they would not exceed their mandate, which caused the two to banter back and forth, with Anakin saying that the presence of Jedi was overkill if not to also investigate, claiming it was implied in their mandate. However, Obi-Wan remained headstrong and told Anakin that they would also do as the Jedi High Council has instructed, causing the room to go silent for a moment. Obi-Wan then finished by saying that Anakin would learn his place, before Padmé chimed in, optimistically stating that the mere presence of the Jedi may itself unravel the mystery.[10]
Anakin complained to Jar Jar about how Padmé had not remembered him
Following her statement, Amidala retired for the night, and stood up, prompting everyone else at the table to do the same. Captain Typho the began to speak to Obi-Wan, stating that he felt better about the Jedi's presence, before telling the Jedi that he would station an officer on every level and that he would be in the control center below the apartment. Shortly after the interaction, Jar Jar stated to Anakin that he was glad to see the padawan again. Not listening to the gungan, Anakin instead complained to Jar Jar that Padmé had barely recognized him, despite him thinking about her every night since they last met, adding that he felt Amidala had forgotten about him completely. Jar Jar, trying his best to respond, simply stated that Amidala was happier then he'd seen her in a while. Obi-Wan then chimed in the conversation, saying that Anakin should focus on the positives rather then the negatives, like how Padmé was pleased to see them. After this, Obi-Wan and Anakin excused themselves and went to go check security.[10]
Something more subtle
Zam Wesell met with her client, Jango Fett, atop the Trade Federation office tower
That night, Zam Wessell, the Bounty hunter responsible for the first attempt on Padmé Amidala's life, met with her client, another bounty hunter by the name of Jango Fett, atop the Trade Federation office tower. Upon Fett's arrival, Wesell informed Fett that her first attempt failed, as Amidala had used a body double. Fett responded by stating his client was getting impatient, and that Wesell's next assassination attempt should be more subtle. To facilitate this, Fett handed Wesell a container of kouhuns, expressing Wesell exercise caution with the poisonous creatures, while also warning that any further mistakes would not be tolerated. Shortly after this exchange, Fett left the building, and shortly afterward, Wesell loaded the container of kouhuns into an ASN courier droid and sent it to Padmé's Apartment.[10]
Meanwhile at Padmé's Apartment, Obi-Wan Kenobi returned from inspecting the security, informing his padawan Anakin Skywalker that Captain Typho had more than enough officers downstairs and that it was unlikely an assassin to enter through the lobby. Obi-Wan then asked if there was any activity up in the apartment, to which Anakin responded there wasn't, adding that he did not standing by until something happened. Following this, Obi-Wan attempted to view the security cameras, before failing an asking Anakin what happened. Anakin replied that Padmé had covered all of the Security cameras in her room, likely due his's consistent observation of her. Obi-Wan, worried about the circumstances, proclaimed his confusion before Anakin then added that Padmé's Astromech Droid R2-D2 had been programed to inform the two Jedi of any imminent danger. In response, Obi-Wan stated that there were many other ways to kill a senator, to which Anakin added that they were also there to catch the assassin, causing Obi-Wan to realize that Padmé was being used as bait. Anakin tried to calm his master to the idea by stating the idea was the senator's, and that he could sense if any danger came to Padmé. Obi-Wan then remarked that Anakin's Force sense was not yet powerful enough, to which Anakin retorted to by asking if Obi-Wan's was, to which the master simply remarked that it possibly was.[10]
Anakin discussed how he still had dreams about his mother while on a balcony that lloked over Galactic City
Soon after, Anakin walked onto the apartment's balcony, where Obi-Wan remarked that Anakin appeared tired, to which Anakin stated that he no longer slept well. Obi-Wan then questioned Anakin if that was because he was having dreams about his mother, to which Anakin simply nodded, before remarking that he didn't know why he kept dreaming about his mother. Obi-Wan tried to calm his padawan while walking out onto the balcony, telling Anakin that dreams passed in time, but Anakin ignored his master's remarks, stating that he'd much rather dream about Padmé, adding that simply being in her presence felt intoxicating. Obi-Wan, realizing his padawan may likely had a crush on the senator, told Anakin that his thoughts betray him, and that he had made a commitment to the Jedi Order that could not be easily broken, adding that Padmé was a politician, who he felt all of which were not to be trusted. Anakin responded that he felt Padmé was not like other politicians, to which Obi Wan responded that in his experience senators focused only on pleasing campaign donors, even to the point of forgoing the niceties of democracy. Anakin complained how Obi-Wan was lecturing him again, sarcastically adding that at least the conversation was not on the economics of politics.[10]
ASN-121 deposited kouhuns into Padmé sleeping quarters
As the two Jedi continued to discuss politics in the living room, the ASN courier droid sent by Zam Wessell arrived outside the Senate apartment complex. As soon as it did, the droid made an rectangular opening building's shields before cutting a small circular hole in window of the room Padmé was sleeping in. The droid then inserted a nozzle through the window's opening, and released the poisonous kouhuns into the room through it, which promptly began making their way towards the sleeping senator. As the kouhuns made their way closer to Amidala, R2-D2, detecting something was wrong, began searching the room with a built-in flashlight, before failing to find the threat, as the kouhuns had temporarily stopped moving. One the droid reentered low power mode, the kouhuns scaled the Padmé's bed, once again making their way towards the senator.[10]
Back in the apartment's living room, Obi-Wan and Anakin continued to talk politics, with Anakin pointing out the his master was generalizing politicians, using chancellor Sheev Palpatine as an example of a politician that did not appear to be corrupt. In response, Obi-Wan said that he observed that Palpatine was clever in following both passions and prejudices of republic senators, which prompted Anakin to respond that he believed that Palpatine wasn't corrupt. However, before Anakin could add anything to his comment, both he and Obi-Wan sensed danger to Padmé, and ran into her room, igniting their lightsabers in the process and quickly slicing the kouhuns in two, which woke Padmé from her sleep. Seeing the courier droid right outside the window, Obi-Wan quickly jumped out the window and grabbed the droid as it began to fly through the towering skylanes of Galactic City to return to it's owner.[10]
Airspeeder chase through Galactic City
Following Obi-Wan's jump, Anakin told Padmé to stay where she was, before quickly rushing out of the room to try and reach his Jedi Master, passing Jamillia, who proceeded to ask Padmé if she was alright, and several members of the Royal Naboo Security Forces including Captain Gregar Typho, who stood guard in preparation for the possibility of any further danger to the senator. Quickly reaching the Senate apartment complex's Airspeeder parking lot, Anakin hopped into an[10] XJ-6 airspeeder owned by senator for the Vorzyd sector[3] Simon Greyshade,[17] swiftly hotwiring the airspeeder and backing out of the parking spot, before driving off into the skylanes of Galactic City to try and catch up with his master.[10]
Obi-Wan held on to ASN-121, leaving him at the mercy of the droid's defensive stratagems
Simultaneously, Obi-Wan, now at the whim of ASN-121's defensive stratagems, continued to cling onto the ASN courier droid avoid falling to his death. Taking advantage of this, ASN-121 defensively drove itself close to a Skyscraper[10] containing the Champalan Embassy,[17] before nearly ramming itself into the building, scraping Obi-Wan's hand against the building, causing the Jedi to temporarily hang by one hand, before quickly managing to grab hold of the droid with both hands once again. With the first stratagem failing to dislodge Obi-Wan, the ASN droid then drove itself into the center of oncoming skylane traffic, forcing airspeeders traveling the expressway to swerve out of the way of the droid and Obi-Wan.[10] As the the droid and the Jedi passed the Bonadan Embassy,[16] the Leffingite speeder thief Magaloof was forced to swerve the stolen speeder he was joyriding in,[84] prompting him to exclaim in confusion upon dodging the Jedi and the droid as such a sight was new to him. Following this, an airspeeder being ridden by the dug Holodrama star Seboca and Aleen's senator Bogg Tyrell[17] was forced to dodge the Jedi, causing Seboca to to exclaim that the jedi was Poodoo as the droid continued on it's path.[10]
As ASN-121 began to approach the to Trade Federation office tower, Zam Wesell used a Scope on her helmet to spot her ASN droid. Upon spotting Obi-Wan clinging to the droid, Zam grabbed her[10] KiSteer 1284 projectile rifle[85] from her Koro-2 all-environment Exodrive airspeeder[3] and shot the droid, destroying it and sending Obi-Wan falling into Galactic City. With her location exposed, Zam swiftly got in her speeder and attempted to make a getaway, closing the speeder's side door as she swerved to the right.[10]
Simultaneously, Anakin, having nearly caught up to Obi-Wan and seeing that his master was falling, positioned his speeder below Obi-Wan's trajectory, allowing Obi-Wan to land on the back of the airspeeder and climb into the open-top cockpit. As Obi-Wan climbed into the cockpit, he then asked what had taken Anakin so long to catch up, to which Anakin snarkily responded that he couldn't find a speeder that he liked and met his requirements. Obi-Wan then spotted Zam's speeder and pointed it out to Anakin, before responding to Anakin's previous comment by suggesting if Anakin practiced his Lightsaber combat techniques as much as his wit, he would rival Yoda as a swordsman, prompting Anakin to state that he though he already did, to which Obi-Wan replied that was only the case in Anakin's own mind.[10]
As the two jedi tailed Zam and began to catch up with her speeder, Zam drove her speeder into an oncoming skylane, dodging the traffic while doing so, before aiming her airspeeder downwards[10] to drive lower into Galactic City towards a dense series of buildings known as the "Corusca Circus, which sat at an intersection between three metropolitan canyons.[17] As such, Anakin, keeping on Zam's tail, drove the speeder he and Obi-Wan was in the same way, causing the speeder to narrowly dodge traffic several times. While driving downwards, Zam drove her speeder close to a giant blue[10] Giga-class transport known as the "Ghost Ship"[17] before leveling out, causing Anakin to aim the speeder he was in towards the ship. Upon realizing their airspeeder was on a collision with the Giga-class transport, Obi-Wan told Anakin to pull up, though the padawan only laughed as the airspeeder came closer to colliding with the Ghost Ship, before finally leveling out the airspeeder right before impact, avoiding a collision. In response to the events that had just unfolded, Obi-Wan reminded his padawan of his disliking so that type of situation, prompting Anakin to sarcastically apologize that he had forgotten Obi-Wan's dislike of flying, causing Obi-Wan to respond that he didn't mind flying, though Anakin's current methods were needlessly dangerous.[10]
With the Jedi still on her tail, Zam then piloted her speeder between two skyscrapers[10] to a industrial zone of Galactic City where a recycling plant and the Greth Lan-Dwu Corp. electrical power-generating plant was located. With her Jedi pursuers still hot on her tail, Zam, knowing the Jedi were in an open-top airspeeder, intentionally lead the jedi through exhaust vents from the recycling plant below that released fires from burning toxic gas into less harmful forms,[17] though the jedi managed to dodge the flames. Following this, Zam piloted her speeder towards[10] a power coupling for the power plant,[17] shooting at the coupling with a pistol, causing the coupling to malfunction and release purple electricity, though not before safely passing through the coupling. However, Anakin, wanting to keep on Zam's tail, piloted the speeder he and Obi-Wan were in through the coupling, temporarily electrocuting both occupants, despite Obi-Wan's protests and advice.[10]
With her speeder reaching the border of the industrial zone and the jedi still close behind, Zam then climbed her speeder upwards,[10] passing the central strategy planning offices for the Tagge Corporation as she did so.[17] Following this, Zam briefly piloted her speeder through a skylane, before making a sharp turn into a skytunnel that passed over an office for the Huosnoughow Foundation, a financial think tank with close connections to the Galactic Senate.[17] Anakin however, did not follow Zam into the tunnel, with Obi-Wan then asking why he did so, with Anakin explaining that if they kept the chase up for a lot longer, the bounty hunter they were following would likely die, which would be unhelpful for solving the attempts on Padmé's life, before adding that he was taking a shortcut. With Zam exiting the tunnel and the jedi seemingly no longer on her tail, Zam removed her bandana[10] while passing by the Bank of the Core.[17]
Shortly after however, Anakin, having driven the speeder he and Obi-Wan were in though a shortcut he mapped with his knowledge of the sector they were in that passed by a subdivision of the Coruscant Ministry of Ingress, a branch office of Farbreini MicroElectronics, and the Senatorial Accounts Presidium,[17] reached where he thought Zam would be. Stopping the airspeeder, Obi-Wan declared that Anakin had lost Zam, with Anakin sarcastically apologizing to his master, before while Obi-Wan declared that Anakin's shortcut was bad and that Zam had gone the other way. Before Obi-Wan could finish however, Anakin, having watched the skylane traffic and seen Zam's speeder, jumped out the airspeeder and began plummeting towards Zam's speeder, causing Obi-Wan to remark to himself his dislike for Anakin's impulsiveness.[10] Passing a droid research institute funded by Cybot Galactica where software for the controversial Advanced Appendage Bus was developed on his nearly 600 meter drop,[17] Anakin eventually grabbed onto the tail of Zam's speeder, causing Zam to look up and attempt to shake Anakin off the speeder, pushing Anakin to the front of the speeder. With Anakin in a vulnerable position, Zam then attempted to shoot the jedi with her pistol, though failing before Anakin the made a small jump to the other prong of Zam's speeder.[10]

Trouble on Christophsis
the Christophsian sent a plea to the Jedi for help
Early into the Clone Wars in 22 BBY,[86] the Confederacy of Independent Systems invaded the planet Christophsis. Unable to hold out any longer and out of options, the People of Christophsis eventually senr a Hologram transmission to the Jedi High Council requesting assistance in repelling the Separatists off Christophsis. Upon receiving the transmission, the Jedi Council, including Jedi Master Yoda, Mace Windu, and Plo Koon watched the hologram from the Jedi Council Chamber at the Jedi Temple in Galactic City. In response to the request for help by the Christophsians, the Jedi Order dispatched the Jedi Knights Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker to repel the invasion.[87]
Chancellor Palpatine watched Jabba 's request for help
Not long after, Rotta, the son of the Hutt Cartel Crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure, was kidnapped by Separatist forces posing as Pirates. Upon learning of his son's kidnapping, Jabba sent a request for help to both the Separatist Alliance and the Galactic Republic. Upon the message's arrival, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, along with Jedi Masters Mace Windu, Plo Koon, and Luminara Unduli, watched the hologram message at the Chancellor's office. Upon finishing the recording, Palpatine stated that he felt the Republic should help Jabba, pointing out that it was the perfect opportunity to help gain favor with the Hutt Clan. In response, Mace Windu stated that he didn't like dealing with criminals and that it was a dark day for the Republic. Palpatine agreed with Mace's worries, before pointing out that the republic didn't have much choice, as the Hutts had influence over much of the Outer Rim Territories, and were in control of Hyperspace routes that the Republic desperately needed to move their troops. Responding, Mace Windu stated that there was more to the kidnapping than on the surface, to which Palpatine stated that the Jedi should then send as much Jedi as they could. Windu then pointed out that General Grievous had spread the Jedi and the Republic Military thin, adding that the only Jedi they could send were Anakin and Obi-Wan, believing that the two Jedi had firmly taken control of Christophsis. In reality however, the Battle of Christophsis continued to rage, as Separatist forces under the command of Whorm Loathsom.[21]
Following his discussion with the Supreme Chancellor, Mace Windu, along with Master Yoda, spoke with Admiral Wullf Yularen via hologram, telling the admiral that they needed to make contact with Kenobi. Yularen responded that his fleet had been unable to make contact with the Jedi, prompting the jedi to send a messenger (and soon to be padawan to Anakin Skywalker) to the fleet, instructing Yularen to drop her off as soon as possible.[21]

Resolutions
Around 1300 BBY, an asteroid hit the homeworld of the B'ankora species. In the aftermath, the remaining members of the species were temporarily relocated to a then-undeveloped part of Galactic City that came to be known as the B'ankor Refuge. As time passed, the surrounding parts of Galactic City developed with the refuge, and the local coruscanti came to use refuge for recreational activities due to the artificially created organic landscape. Towards the end of the Republic Era, Supreme Chancellor Chasen Piian gave the refuge in perpetuity to the sole survivors of the species.

Imperial Security Briefing
In 5 BBY,[88] two sentry guards on the Preox-Morlana Corporation-run planet Morlana One were killed by Cassian Jeron Andor. Despite receiving orders from Pre-Mor Authority Security Forces Chief Inspector Hyne not to pursue the case further and instead conjure a suitable cover story, Deputy Inspector Syril Karn disobeyed the directions and began investigating the incident in the chief inspector's temporary absence to attend a security conference.[89] Syril quickly traced the killing to Andor, and received a tip from that the Andor was on his adoptive homeworld of Ferrix, which was technically under the jurisdiction of Preox-Morlana. As a result, Syril, with the help of Sergeant Linus Mosk, gathered a team of Tac-Corpos and attempted to ambush Andor in Ferrix City.[90] Upon their arrival to the Ferrix city however, Pre-Mor enforcement was met with local resistance,[91] which allowed Andor to ultimately flee Ferrix with the help of the rebel network leader Luthen Rael, who had met with Andor in an attempt to hire the thief to help with a planned robbery on the planet Aldhani.[38]
A little while after, ISB Supervisor Dedra Meero walked through Imperial City to the ISB Central Office to attend a regularly-scheduled briefing of the ISB Board headed by Major Lio Partagaz. During the meeting, ISB Supervisor Grandi requested more resources for the Ryloth sector to combat the increasing detention rates should erosion in the local governments continue. Upon hearing the request, Major Partagaz asked where the allocated resources would go, to which Grandi, while chuckling softly, responded to by claiming that the funding would go to increased surveillance of anti-Imperial activity. Upon hearing this, Partagaz asked Grandi if she was being intentionally vague, to which the supervisor simply stated she was not. As a result, Partagaz ordered that he be given the specific uses of funding before the end of the day.[38]
Upon finishing with Grandi, Partagaz then asked Supervisor Lagret about a report from Arvala-6. Responding to the major, Lagret stated that the report was a positive development, as the conflict on the planet had calmed enough that the Galactic Empire's mining efforts had resumed in their occupied lands. Partagaz then asked if the storage issues for the displaced residents of the planet still existed, to which Lagret stated they did. In response, Partagaz frustratingly reminded Lagret that his memorandum of recommendations regarding the issue was still unfinished. In his own defense, Lagret claimed that he was awaiting an assessment from the Arvala-6's ministerial director, which Partagaz sarcastically pointed out was stupid as the ministerial director had already done a terrible job managing the conflict. Lagret remained silent following the Major's sarcastic statement, prompting Partagaz to ask Lagret what they did in the building. Lagret, confused, asked for clarification, causing Partagaz rephrase the question by asking what their purpose was. Still confused, Lagret attempted to clarify if the major was asking what their purpose was on Arvala-6, which prompted Partagaz to open the question to the room. Responding to the question, Supervisor Dedra Meero repeated verbatim the ISB's mission statement, to which Partagaz both pointed out that she had repeated the statement and stated that the supervisor was wrong. Seeing Meero's confusion, Partagaz continued by stating that security was an illusion, and compared the ISB to healthcare providers, stating that they locate "Germs" both internal and foreign, and that the longer they wait to identify the issue, the harder it becomes to solve it. Finishing, Partagaz asked Lagret if he understood the message, to which the supervisor stated that he did. The major then said that the supervisor shouldn't trouble himself with writing the memorandum, and stated he would reassign it to someone else.[38]
ISB supervisor Jung shared his reasoning for added protection requests for the Abrion sector
Partagaz then moved on the Supervisor Blevin, asking about the the Incident on Ferrix. Blevin explained that corporate security was still in charge in the Morlana sector, and that those forces had attempted to serve a warrant and ran into trouble. Partagaz asked for clarity on what the trouble was, prompting Blevin to state that the incident had caused several deaths, some property damage, interruption of services, and that a Imperial N-S9 Starpath Unit had been discovered at the scene, the last point of which intrigued Supervisor Meero. Partagaz asked if the names of those responsible were known, to which Blevin responded that he currently did not know as he would be leaving to deal with the situation after the meeting. Partagaz then stated that the two would meet before the supervisor's departure, before moving on to supervisor Jung, asking the supervisor to elaborate on added protection requests to the Abrion sector. Jung responded that the requests were proactive measures, as there was an increase in shipments to the Scarif.[38]
Imperial Security Beefing
- "You fall here, you fall alone."
"Are you denying my request?"
"For the second time today." - ―Blevin and Dedra Meero
Meero and Heert examined the records from Ferrix incident
Intrigued by the mention of an Imperial N-S9 Starpath Unit by ISB Supervisor Blevin, Supervisor Meero and her ISB Attendant Heert began looking through the ISB after-action report about the Ferrix Incident in an attempt to identify the Starpath unit as one stolen from the Steergard Naval Yard a year prior. As the two looked through the report, Heert pointed out that the report stated that five people were reported dead, four being pre-mor security employees and one being a local resident of Ferrix, before also noticing that "Ferrix" was misspelt in the report and telling Meero as much. Meero however, continued to look through the files in search of the Starpath Unit, stating that since Blevin said it existed in the meeting, it must be in the report. Heert the pointed out that there was a raw transmission somewhere in the report, but was quickly cut of by Meero, who had found the report on the Unauthorized imperial equipment listed under "Varnisi, reading the report out to Heert on how an Ensign had recovered the starpath unit from the site, adding that it had to be the box from Steergard, which Heert agreed with. Meero then ordered that Heert go to Blevin's office to request all information on Ferrix as the connection between the starpath unit and Ferrix gave her jurisdiction. Responding, Heert stated that it would man more if Meero went instead, to which Meero stated that she didn't want to spark Blevin's interest. Following this, Heert left Meero's office to request the files, but was denied the request by Blevin.[38]
Blevin refused to hand over the files relating to the Ferrix incident
Following Heert's request being denied, Supervisor Meero went to Blevin's office to request the files herself. Opening the door, she found Blevin standing in the office, and began to state how Heert had told her that the request of files on the Ferrix incident had been denied. In response, Blevin simply dismissed Meero, stating that he had work to do. Unfazed, Meero smugly stated that it was an official request by a member of her staff, to which Blevin responded that Meero should schedule and appointment. Meero then directly stated that she wanted the full report, to which Blevin responded that it was his sector. In response, Meero explained that the Imperial Starpath unit had been stolen from the Steergard Naval Yard was found at the scene, giving her jurisdictional access. Ignoring Meero's explanation, Blevin instead stated that given Meero had only been in ISB Investigations for around a year, she should steady the ladder before climbing it. Meero responded that she wasn't looking for career advice, prompting Blevin to tell the supervisor that if she fell in the ISB, she would fall alone. Meero then asked if Blevin was once again denying her request, to which the supervisor responded that he was for the second time that day. Meero the turned and left the office while proclaiming she would take the issue up directly with Major Partagaz, prompting Blevin to tell Meero to not look down as she left the office, before returning to his work.[38]
Imperial Security Berating
Both Meero and Blevin created intra-office friction over the report on the Ferrix incident
Following the interaction, the two ISB supervisors entered the ISB conference room at stared at each other while awaiting Partagaz's arrival. When the major finally arrived, he simply stated the word "speak", prompting Blevin to begin speaking. Blevin explained that Meero was demanding the raw data from the Ferrix Incident, causing Meero to cut in and explain that the starpath unit recovered from the incident was traced to an Airbase under her jurisdiction. Blevin then responded that Meero should spend more time increasing security at her military bases and less time on her career, causing Partagaz to ask Meero for her response. Meero then stated that the Starpath unit has great value to the rebels, and tracing the theft would help expose rebel activity in one of her sectors. Partagaz then pointed out that items can also be taken for money, asking if it was worth causing much inter-office friction for what appeared to be a robbery that had gone awry. Meero then stated that she felt the incident was part of an ongoing rebel effort to steal useful imperial equipment for a future organized rebellion, adding that she had three case files on her desk suggesting a pattern of thefts. Partagaz then pointed out that it was only her feeling, causing Meero to respond that she was seeing signs of coordinated activity over multiple sectors. Partagaz asked what activity Meero was seeing, prompting the supervisor to explain that she was seeing similar items being stolen, repeated methods, and adding that she also had a gut instinct about it. Partagaz then responded that unlike ISB Enforcement, where Meero had come from, the investigations board acted on verified information. Partagaz then added that Meero should inform him should more clear evidence present itself, and that the supervisors should restrict themselves to their own sectors. The major then dismissed Blevin, who then nodded and left the room.[38]
Following Blevin's exit, Partagaz had reminded Meero that she only had two sectors to supervise, whereas Blevin had six. Partagaz then admitted that he felt Blevin followed the traditional viewpoint of ISB staff, and that he was likely a challenge to work with. The major then pointed out that Blevin's quarterly reports were in, while Meero's were not, and yet Meero was still spending her time on the Ferrix issue, adding that their was a perhaps unfair high bar for a Meero's performance, though it could potentially be the foundation for a uniquely superior career. Partagaz then continued that Meero was supposed to be more competent, which is why the ISB was bringing in officers like her, adding that she should remind everybody of that, to which supervisor Meero finally responded in agreement. Partagaz then stated that he was impressed by Meero's detention numbers on Sev Tok, pointing out it was far above the detention quota, and adding that he might send similar work Dedra's way before dismissing Meero.[38]
Syril's Return
Syril arrived in Imperial City at the Coruscant Eastern Spaceport
Following the Ferrix incident, the man responsible, Deputy Inspector Syril Karn was personally fired from his position on Morlana One by ISB Supervisor Blevin as the Free Trade sector and it's company, the Consolidated Holdings of Preox-Morlana Corporation, was imperialized as a result of his actions. Following this, Syril was forced to return to Coruscant,[38] arriving in Imperial City's Port District[2] at the Coruscant Eastern Spaceport.[92] Following his arrival to the spaceport, Syril made his way through the spaceport's crowd while carrying his luggage as a Starship landed at the spaceport and the spaceport's announcer shared over the Intercom that Telgordo Travel's service to Hosnian Prime, Plexis, and Eufornis Major would now be departing from Platform 7-12 and Platform 7-13. Once Syril made his way out of the crowd, he walked through a small walkway with Viewscreens on departure and travel information as the intercom's announcer reminded passengers not to join their lines without their boarding pass.[38]
Syril shocked his mom upon his return
Once outside the spaceport, Syril made his way to his mother Eedy Karn's house. Along the journey, Syril took a Turbolift to his mother's floor in the apartment building she lived in, putting down his baggage and watching the skyline gradually grow darker as the turbolift descended. Once on the correct floor, he walked across a skybridge and arrived to his mother's house. Hearing Syril ring the doorbell, Eedy opened the door to find Syril, who then simply acknowledged his mother. Eedy slapped her son on the cheek before hugging him. Following this, she asked what a bystander on the other side of the skybridge what they were looking at, prompting the bystander to walk off. Eedy, slightly crying, then let Syril into the household while helping him with his bags before closing the door once they were both inside.[38]
Mothma's conflicts
Coruscant's unofficial temple of patience
Simultaneously, Axis network spymaster Luthen Rael also returned to Coruscant after dropping Cassian Jeron Andor off on Aldhani to help with an upcoming heist. Donning his antiques dealer persona upon his arrival, his V-21.1 Chevlex light haulcraft arrived to his antiques shop and gallery named "Galactic Antiquities and Objects of Interest" using landing protocol 037.[38]
Later in the day, Mon Mothma travelled to Galactic Antiquities and Objects of Interest like she had done many times before, albeit this time with a new driver for her JPP-192 limospeeder. Upon her arrival, Luthen's assistant, Kleya Marki, let Luthen know of the senator's arrival, also letting Rael know that there was a new driver. Luthen asked if the driver was anybody that they recognized, to which Kleya stated that she'd never seen him before. Rael then asked if the new driver was Chandrilan, to which Marki stated that one would think that. Following the exchange, senator Mothma entered the gallery, and was greeted warmly by Luthen. Mon Mothma apologized for being very late, adding that it's always right when he's leaving that people remember bother him. Luthen responded that Mothma could free her mind, stating that the gallery was metaphorically a place where time stood still, adding that it's hard being surrounded by history and not being humbled by how small daily anxieties really are. Mothma then agreed with Luthen, adding that she needed to hear that. Following this exchange, Luthen reintroduced Kleya, jokingly adding that they had nicknamed the gallery "Coruscant's unofficial temple off patience", prompting Mothma to teasingly reply that she should then come more often.[38]
Following the formalities, Luthen confirmed that Mothma was here for a gift for her husband Perrin Fertha, to which Mothma confirmed, adding that it was for his Day of Days, one of many Chandrilan customs. Luthen responded that their culture had a rich history, which Mothma stated was a kind way of saying it. Luthen then invited Mothma to come see several gifts he had put aside, recalling that Perrin had an interest in military artifacts, which Mothma confirmed as the two walked past a Mandalorian armor chestplate. The two then stopped so Luthen could show Mothma an Utapaun monk cudgel, as Luthen explained what the artifact was, continuing that ceremonial cudgels could be found in many places, but the artifact was the real version, before adding it made a unique gift for most but was a treasure to an aficionado.[38]
As Luthen continued to explain the cudgel's history by explaining how the weapon's history dated back to the eighth archaic settlement, Kleya asked Mothma's driver if she could show him something. The driver stated that Kleya shouldn't bother as he couldn't afford anything, Marki still insisted she show him some some coins that had just arrived, stating that there was no harm in looking. The driver agreed, and Kleya brought him over to take a look at the coins. Simultaneously, Mon said that she wanted to expand Perrin's tastes beyond weaponry, asking Luthen if there was anything else that might interest Perrin. Luthen replied that Mon's timing was excellent and that the gallery just had something special come in, inviting Mothma to come with him to the back of the shop. As the two made their way to the back, Luthen remarked that the piece was a two-faced divinity as they both passed a set of[38] Sith armor.[93] Simultaneously, the driver, who had been watching Luthen and Mothma, was socially pressured and ultimately distracted by Kleya, who was showing him coins over fourteen-thousnd years old.[38]
As the Luthen and Mothma entered the back room, Luthen continued explaining the history of the piece, describing the goddess and serpent that shared the same mouth, and both came from an overworld. One he finished with his sentence however, Luthen began whispering, asking that if Mothma was unable to deliver the funds that that he required to continue funding his rebel network, she should let him know, as he needed to make sure he could properly plan for the situation. Mothma responded that the funds were there, but the money was becoming increasingly difficult to move around, as she was being constantly watched and could not pull funds as she used to. Luthen responded that their watching everyone, though Mothma responded that it was different, as there was a new spy in the imperial senate every day, and that when she visits the bank, everyone there is new. Luthen then realized that the driver was also a spy, to which Mothma responded that she felt under siege. After a brief pause, Luthen stated that he had many people to feed and could on forage for so long, before Mothma added that she thought she had found someone who could help. Upon hearing this, Luthen remarked that the network needed more funding, not more people, to which Mothma responded that Luthen shouldn't lecture her on vulnerability, as she felt nobody was more at risk then she was, adding that she had thought it through and knew she'd be the first one to fall. In response, Luthen sighed while grabbing the artifact, and began asking loudly if the senator would like to take the artifact on a loan, ending the secret conversation.[38]
Mothma then went along with proposal of taking the piece on loan, prompting Luthen to state as the two left the back room that if Perrin didn't like it, he'd always be willing to take it back. Luthen then stated that the piece was a daring choice and that he trusted the senator to have the courage to turn back if it was too much, responding to both conversations Luthen and Mothma had that day. Mothma said she appreciated that, and asking if Luthen would be at the gallery, to which he responded that if he wasn't here, Kleya could always reach him. Luthen then asked Kleya to wrap the artifact for the senator, which she promptly did. Shortly afterward, Mothma boarded her airspeeder, which promptly left the mall. As the speeder flew up into the skylanes of Imperial City, Mothma looked out the window of the speeder at the buildings, conflicted on how to proceed.[38]
Dinner preparations
Upon her return to the Chandrilan Embassy, she found Perrin preparing for a dinner. Confused, Mothma asked what all the preparation was for, to which Perrin responded it was for the dinner with the governor. Mothma, still confused, asked what governor, to which Perrin responded it was the governor of Hanna City, reminding his wife that the governor was also his regimental mate. Mothma then remembered the dinner, though was still confused that it was that night, prompting Perrin to state that he had added it to he calandar a month ago after they had discussed it, asking Mothma if she really did not remember it, to which Mothma retorted that she remembered Perrin wearing her down, prompting Perrin to state that he did not think anybody was capable of that. Mothma asked Perrin if he was enjoying this, to which Perrin stated that he was just looking forward to seeing old friends. Mothma, hearing the plural term, asked who else was coming, prompting Perrin to point Mothma to the seating chart on the table. Reading the Viewscreen with the seating chart, she became irritated at the invitation on Ars Dangor and Sly Moore from the Vizier's private chamber. Noticing the anger, Perrin asked if the guests were a problem, to which an agitated Mothma responded that they were as they constantly worked to undermine her work in the senate, to which Perrin suggested that the guests might change their minds after the dinner.[38]
Following the comment, both remained silent until an aide entered the dining area, before being quickly being asked to leave. Following this, Mothma told Perrin that he should not have invited the guests without asking her first, to which Perrin pointed out that it was too late to cancel. After this, Mon ordered Perrin to not seat her political rivals near her, to which Perrin stated he'd already dealt with that, as she'd be sitting at the "boring end" of the table. In response to the description of her rivals being "fun", Mon snarkily suggested that they should find some Ghorman guests for the dinner, using the opportunity to berate Perrin on how his friends had cut off Ghorman's trade lanes the previous day, sarcastically suggesting the dinner group laugh about starving the Ghormans over the third dinner course. Perrin the suggested that Mon take a rest, to which Mon said she would if she was going to be forced to pay attention, and that would not make Perrin happy. Mon then ordered her husband not to do it again, to which Perrin only responded that he had heard a rumor that Mon had bought him a present, prompting Mon to say it was going back, to which Perrin asked if everything had to be boring and sad.[38]
A boring breakfast
The next morning, Syril Karn sat on his bed deep in thought. As he did so, Coruscant's sun briefly lifted above the tall buildings of Imperial City, exposing Syril's room to the sunlight, causing him to look out the window at the sun. Shortly after however, the sun's angle once again cause the sunlight to stop reaching his room, causing it to go dark again.
Following this, Syril made his was out to apartment's living room, sitting down at the dining table before slouching on it.
The rebellion has flown away
What Kind of Weapon?
In 1 BBY, ISB Supervisor Dedra Meero, using classified information produced by the Jedha Working Group forwarded to her by mistake, linked a Fondor Haulcraft mentioned by a captured Partisan spy for the Axis network on Jedha to Luthen Rael, finally uncovering the spymaster of the Axis network. With "Axis" finally in her grasp, Meero began to organize a raid on Luthen's Gallery with ISB Tactical. During these arrangements, a friend of Axis network mole in the Imperial Security Bureau Lonni Jung in ISB Tactical informed Jung of the operation, seeking advice on if complying with Dedra was safe due to the advisor's history of overstepping boundaries.[94]
Following a terrifying discovery, Lonni Jung fled the ISB central office
Realizing that raid was likely targeted Luthen, Jung accessed Dedra Meero's Code cylinder, which he had secretly kept for around a year. As Jung searched Meero's files, he discovered Meero illegally obtained classified files relating to Project Celestial Power, Project Stardust, the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station, and Galen Walton Erso. Realizing the devastating power of the nearly-complete weapon and understanding that given the project's secrecy, he was likely burned, Jung fled the ISB Central Office and activated Rael's emergency alert system. Hearing the alert at the gallery, Luthen prepared for meeting Jung, telling his assistant Kleya Marki to meet him at an agreed upon set of stairs following the meeting. As the two partners perpared prepared, Kleya remarked that this had to be perfect, to which Luthen responded that he felt they had used up all the perfect.[94]
Luthen Rael met Lonni Jung in a park across Imperial City from the ISB central office
Upon his arrival to the spy's meeting spot at a park, Rael found Jung quietly sitting on a park bench. As Rael approached him, Jung expressed his slight shock at the spymaster's arrival. Luthen responded by stating that he had come as Jung had rung the emergency alert, to which Jung remarked that he had been uncertain if the emergency alert would actually work. After these remarks, Jung began sharing the emergency: Dedra Meero had been putting together a squad for a raid in Imperial City, which Jung believed to be a raid to capture Luthen. Luthen responded skeptically, asking how Jung had got the information. In response, Jung shared how a friend in ISB tactical had contacted him to ask if proceeding with Meero's instructions was safe. Luthen interpreted the information as inconclusive as to its origins, and instructed Jung to return to the COMPNOR arcology. However, Jung stated that he could not return to the building as he had burned himself as he felt forced to make a decision. In response, asked what Jung had did, to which Jung simply stated that he had figured everything out, but demanded that he first get assurances on his family's safe passage out of Imperial City.[94]
Luthen pressured Lonni to reveal his terrifying discovery
Ignoring Jung's request for assurances, Luthen again asked Lonni what he had done, to which he revealed that he had had total access to Meero's code cylinder, including her private storage. Jung then added that he kept this information quiet from Luthen to avoid being pressured to use it, but he had finally used it realizing that Dedra was onto Luthen. Luthen clarified if this meant Jung had gone through Meero's files, to which Jung responded that he had used a two hour window to do so. Luthen then asked why Jung was still unsure of if Meero was onto him given he had gone through the files, to which Jung stated that he didn't have time to find out as he found something more urgent and huge. Luthen the remarked that Jung bargaining, which Jung ignored as he continued that he had made sure to not be followed as the information he had discovered was so secretive that he would not have been let out of the arcology otherwise, before again requesting safe passage. Luthen responded that the spy obviously needed safe passage, to which Jung asked where they would go. In response, Luthen stated the final destination depended on the urgency of the escape, to which Jung responded that the Empire would come after him with as much resources and effort as possible as quickly as they could. In response, Luthen remarked that to Jung that he should stop playing games and asking what the information was as they both would be evacuating.[94]
Finally cracking under Luthen's pressure, Jung began to reveal the classified information to the spymaster: The Emperor's Energy Program was the front for the creation of a terrifying weapon lead by Orson Callan Krennic which entailed the mining of Kyber crystals on Jedha, the Suppression of Ghorman, and the planet Scarif, all of which the Axis network had long been trying to understand the true purpose of. Luthen tried to push for more details, though the spy once again asked where his family would be taken. Making the use of the spy one final time, Luthen revealed the location of the rebel base on Yavin 4 to see if the base's location had been exposed to the ISB. Upon hearing the name Yavin, Jung asked what it was, to which Luthen responded that they would be safe there and asked for the final details he had uncovered. Jung then did as he was asked, and upon finishing, was promptly shot in the chest by Luthen, who then fled the park to Kleya Marki's location. When a pet Tooka named "Pix" passed by the dead spy's body, it approached the body to smell it before by ordered by it's owner to come back to them.[94]

Due to Imperial City's status as a planet-covering city, residents of Imperial City were known as "Coruscanti," sharing their name with Coruscant rather than the city they resided in.
Holidays
All-Species Week
All-Species Week was a week-long holiday celebrated in Imperial City that celebrated the diversity of the sentient species that inhabited the city. During the holiday, residents from many different parts of the city would travel to other parts via spaceports, large crowds were common, and skylane traffic in both public and government lanes were often at a standstill.[7]
Empire Day
An Imperial parade
As the capital city of the Galactic Empire, during the Imperial Era, Imperial City hosted some of the largest celebrations of Empire Day, a holiday which celebrated the founding of the Galactic Empire. During the holiday, the Imperial Military hosted a large parade through Imperial City, which could be seen from the HoloNet News building. The yearly parade contained marching officers and soldiers that were flanked by the Empire's many machines of war, followed by smaller vehicles that showed off the latest Imperial technology such as the TIE striker.[96]
During the holiday, a lavish and formal party known as the Imperial Ball was hosted at the Imperial Palace. The event was mostly attended by Imperial officers, Politicians, and Bureaucrats, though some Journalists (albeit from state-controlled media outlets such as HoloNet News) were also invited, who gave and "inside look" at the ball.[96]

The Coruscant Security Force served as Law Enforcement in Imperial City
The Coruscant Security Force,[97] often shortened to "CSF"[98] or simply called the Coruscant Police, served as the Law enforcement agency for Imperial City.[99] Tasked with maintaining order and peace in the galactic Capital City, the Coruscant Security Force conducted regular patrols across Imperial City,[99] and conducted investigations into crimes such as murder,[100] kidnapping,[101] assault, and many other crimes.[99] To streamline crime-stopping efforts, Imperial City was split into several "police sectors" such as police sector 417, which were used for patrolling purposes.[99] During the Republic Era, warrants were required to arrest people[102] unless a crime was actively in progress.[99]
While the Coruscant Security Force was composed of both sentient police officers[97][103] and mechanical droid forces programmed for police functions, on Imperial City's surface levels, police droids, usually GU-series Guardian police droids, were a much more common sight,[104] patrolling the city using BARC speeders or by foot.[100] Police droids would often carry either SS-410 Police Special blaster pistols[105] or batons to defend themselves,[100] though they would only be utilized if specific conditions were met, as while the droids were given combat programming, their primary function was to prevent people from being harmed.[104] During investigations however, sentient police officers, often serving as detectives known as "inspectors", would be brought in to help solve police cases.[100] Security cameras capable of facial recognition were also deployed around high-risk areas such as spaceports.[7]
Coruscant Underworld Police's armor gave them a presence of anonymity and authority
Unlike in Imperial City's surface levels, in the city's much more lawless subterranean levels, underworld police would serve as patrollers and law enforcement,[103] who used a recruitment test to help hire individuals proficient in memorizing and spotting faces, among other skills.[106] The underworld police were trained in armed and unarmed combat, as well as tracking, security, interrogations and speeder piloting,[107] and wore heavy leather and metal armor with their heads completely covered, complete with mechanical eye coverings to protect them from the many dangers they encountered from the criminal elements of the underworld. The armor gave the police a presence of anonymity and authority,[108] which along with the police's skill, made many underworld denizens fear the underworld police.[107] However, when tough situations presented themselves, the Underworld police would call for help from Klatooinian enforcers employed by the CSF known as "CSF bruisers",[98] GU-series Guardian police droids eqiuped with heavy blaster firepower,[107] or powerful Security droids such as the Security Droid Enforcer K-4O5 to help deal with the situation.[98]
Despite the Federal District already being well protected with the help of the Supreme Chancellor's Senate Guards and Senate Commandos,[109] following the outbreak of the Clone Wars, an elite corps of clone shock troopers from Kamino were brought to Galactic City to give extra protection to the Galactic Republic's capital, creating the Coruscant Guard.[110] Under the command of Clone Commander Fox,[111] the Coruscant Guard served as bodyguards for members of the Galactic Senate and the Supreme Chancellor, guarded high risk prisons and prisoners,[112] protected and guarded vital Republic infrastructure,[113] assisted the Coruscant Security Force with law enforcement,[114] and provided urban riot control.[12]
KX-series security droids (pictured) served Imperial City Law Enforcement during the Imperial Era
Following the Proclamation of the New Order and the formation of the Galactic Empire with the end of the Clone Wars, the Coruscant Guard,[28] along with Coruscant Security Forces, continued to serve as security in the Imperial City.[98] As the Imperial Era continued however, the Imperial Stormtrooper[115] and it's patrol-focused variant[98] gradually replaced the Clone Shock Trooper[116] as Law Enforcement,[115] and the hulking and powerful KX-series security droid[117] (and it's enforcement variant) similarly replaced[117][98] the GU-series Guardian police droids as city patrol droids.[104] Despite this, the Coruscant underworld police still remained as active law enforcement alongside Imperial stormtroopers,[98] and the Imperial Security Bureau's Tactical division was capable of initiating sector-wide comms scrambles and partaking in raids in Imperial City.[117] Following the defeat of the Empire and the rise of the New Republic with the signing of the Galactic Concordance,[27] New Republic soldiers from the New Republic Defense Force served as Law Enforcement in Imperial City.[22]
Fire and Rescue
A Coruscant Rescue Ops worker
The Coruscant Rescue Ops served as the fire department for Imperial City, often using F-143 emergency speeders to help put out fires when needed. Often claiming that they existed only to serve the greater good for the city, the Coruscant Rescue Ops also provided disaster relief to Imperial City whenever it was necessary.[118] The Coruscant Rescue Ops was capable of intercepting and guiding starships with the use of tractor beams, and was split into smaller groups such as Fire Team Three, which was lead by Captain Jikesh Valia at the time of the Battle of Coruscant.[119]
Health services
The Coruscant Health Office served as the health department for Imperial City. The health office controlled outbreaks of disease, including those near Imperial City's spaceports, where outbreaks were more common due to the constant flow of travelers through Imperial City's spaceports, which acted as a nexus for travel to many different worlds. One of the office's powers was the ability to quarantine certain areas to contain outbreaks, though often slowed down the already complicated process of managing the constant flow of traffic through Imperial City.[2]
In emergencies, persons in critical condition could be transported to a Medcenter in Imperial City such as Lina Soh Hospital or the Galactic Senate Medcenter via Ambulances such as the Imperial ambunaut.[120] The Imperial Security Bureau had the authority to shut down parts of a hospital and have patients moved in order to secure any high-risk targets in their custody, much to the annoyance of some hospital directors and Doctors.[94]

Galactic Republic
Following the founding of the Galactic Republic in 25,000 BBY,[1] Coruscant outpaced and outmaneuvered rival ecumenopolis worlds such as Troithe to become the republic's capital, eventually succeeding with Galactic City eventually becoming crowned as the capital city of the Republic.[46] As such, much of the Republic's governing organizations headquartered themselves in Galactic City.[2] Following the reformation of the Old Republic into the Modern Galactic Republic around 1032 BBY,[56] the newly created Republic Senate[13] began convening at the Galactic Senate Chamber in the newly constructed massive Senate Building in the Federal District,[3] with various supporting structures for the building being built in various locations across[13] and near the building's front plaza.[10]
In the millennium that followed,[10] the Republic experienced a massive growth in territory, thrived, and experienced peace,[121] all while Galactic City continued to serve as the galactic capital, giving the city and Coruscant a false sense of security.[122] However, as time passed and the zenith of the Republic Era faded into history, the republic slowly devolved into endless bureaucracy as a result of corporations and criminal organizations bribing and lobbing senators into voting in support of favorable legislation for them.[31] During this time, the Jedi Order further centralized the Order's activities around the Jedi Grand Temple, firmly establishing the Order's continued position as peacekeepers of the Republic, though many Jedi disagreed and debated this decision.[17] As a result or growing corruption, perception of Galactic City shifted negatively to that of a safe haven for corrupt and establishment politicians, and the Jedi also came to be viewed as servants to the corrupt senate rather than the people as a result of being headquartered in Galactic City.[58]

Federal District
The Federal District, informally nicknamed the "Core of Coruscant" or "Core Square," was considered the undisputed center of the galaxy by the time of the Galactic Empire.[11] Located in the Northern Hemisphere of Coruscant as part of Galactic City, the district was home to the headquarters of many branches of galactic governments that had used Coruscant as their capital.[123]
The Senate Building during the Imperial Era
During the era of the Galactic Republic, the most prominent building in the district was the Galactic Senate Building, where delegates and senator from many worlds across the galaxy met as part of the Galactic Senate in the building's main chamber.[124] Directly across the senate plaza from the Senate Building sat the Senate executive building, which housed the offices of senators and republic executives alike. However, despite the continued existence of senate through the first part of the Imperial Era,[28][14] the district's focal point was shifted to the Imperial Palace.[124] Originally constructed as a Jedi temple over a sith shrine in attempt to bury the legacy of the sith on Coruscant,[13] the temple had eventually become the headquarters of the Jedi Order. As such, shortly before the republic's transformation into the Galactic Empire, Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, secretly a Sith lord himself, declared the Jedi Order traitors, and subsequently had many of the galaxy's Jedi killed, with Operation: Knightfall seeing the temple stormed.[28] Following this, the Jedi Temple was turned into a palace for the newly-proclaimed Galactic Emperor Palpatine, making the palace an important spot in the skyline of Imperial City.[124]
Collective Commerce District
The Collective Commerce District, also known as Coco Town, was a district made from a dilapidated industrial area. During the Republic Era, the Besalisk Dexter Jettster ran a diner known as Dex's Diner in the district, with many Hard-working laborers often congregating at the eatery.[125]

Continuity
The Rebellion Begins (pictured) marked the first time Imperial City was named as such in Canon
Imperial City was first shown, albeit unidentified, in the current Star Wars canon in the Special Edition of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi,[126] which released on March 14 1997.[127] The city remained unnamed in Star Wars canon until it was identified as "Imperial City" in The Rebellion Begins,[32] a book adaptation of Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion by Michael Kogge released on October 21, 2014.[128] Imperial City was also identified as "Galactic City" in Ultimate Star Wars,[3] a 2015 reference book,[129] and as "Republic City" in The High Republic: Temptation of the Force, a 2024 novel written by Tessa Gratton and published as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[33] Phase III.[130]
In Star Wars Legends, Imperial City was first mentioned in the first edition rulebook of West End Games's roleplaying game,[131] released in October 1987[132] However, The Roleplaying Game's first edition rulebook also established that the Imperial Palace was located in Imperial City,[131] retroactively establishing that the appearance of the Imperial Palace in the sixty-third issue of Marvel Comics' 1977 Star Wars comic-book series, which was written by David Michelinie and Walt Simonson, penciled by Tom Palmer,[133] and published on on June 15, 1982,[134] as the de facto first appearance of the city as well.[133][131]
Development
Conception
Concept art of the "Imperial City of Alderaan" made by Ralph McQuarrie
Concepts for what would eventually become Imperial City in Star Wars dates back to the earliest drafts of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. In the original story synopsis for the film, an ecumenopolis (described as a city-planet in the treatment) named "Alderaan" served as the capital planet of the "New Galactic Empire."[135] In subsequent drafts including the rough,[136] second,[137] and third drafts of the film,[138] the ecumenopolis capital city concept was dropped in favor of a floating capital city on a gas giant named the "Imperial City of Alderaan,"[137] with Ralph McQuarrie producing concept art for the capital city. By George Lucas's fourth draft for the film however, the Imperial City of Alderaan was removed from the film due to budget constraints, with scenes originally set in the city being moved to the Death Star. Despite the Imperial City ultimately being removed from the script, concept art of the city produced by Ralph McQuarrie for the second draft of the film would eventually be re-used for the look of Cloud City in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.[139]
Concept art of the Imperial Palace on Had Abbadon made by Ralph McQuarrie
Despite the Imperial City of Alderaan ultimately being scrapped for Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, the concept of Imperial City returned during the production of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.[140] In an early draft of the film, a Revised Rough Draft of the film,[141] the Imperial Capital Planet was named "Had Abbadon",[142] and similarly to Coruscant in both Star Wars continuities[31] and the original treatment for Star Wars,[135] Had Abbadon was a ecumenopolis that would contain the Imperial Palace, which unlike the Imperial Palace in both continuities, would be surrounded by a lake of lava where Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker would duel.[142] As such, Ralph McQuarrie produced concept art for Had Abbadon and it's planet-covering city, and a scene was planned where the Emperor would have had an audience with Darth Vader, with the planet-covering city visible from the throne room.[141] However, technical limitations of creating such a city at the time made the task near impossible, leading to the concept eventually being cut, with the Emperor's throne room being moved to the Death Star II.[142][140]

- "At the time I knew that Coruscant was a planet-wide city, but I assumed that there would still be a few areas of wilderness (maybe called parks by the inhabitants) that would have no buildings on them. Mountains, for one thing, would probably not be cost-effective to knock down. Besides, the rich and powerful always want some nature-type areas left open where they can build their private country retreats."
- ―Timothy Zahn
"Empire Capitol" as it appeared in Star Wars (1977) 63
Despite the concept being scrapped from Return of the Jedi, Imperial City still found it's way into the Expanded Universe material, starting with Marvel Comics' 1977 comic series.[133][144] In the 61st issue of the comic series released on April 13, 1982[134] and written by David Michelinie, written and penciled by Walt Simonson, and inked by Tom Palmer, a location known as "Imperial Capitol" was mentioned.[144] Not long after in series' 63rd issue released on June 15, 1982,[134] also written by David Michelinie and Walt Simonson while being penciled and inked by Tom Palmer, the Imperial Palace was first depicted (albeit in an In-Universe recording), with the location of the palace only being identified as "Empire Capitol".[133]
The In-universe advertisement for the "Grand Galactic Tour" published in the first edition rulebook of Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game
In 1987,[132] the first edition rulebook of Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game by West End Games released, which included an In-universe advertisement for the "Grand Galactic Tour" using Ralph McQuarrie's concept art. In the advertisement, Bespin was pictured[131] with McQuarrie's concept art for the Imperial City of Alderaan,[131][139] and the Imperial Capital was identified as Imperial City for the first time,[131] alongside an image of McQuarrie's concept art for Had Abbadon's planet-wide city and a description of Imperial City.[131][140] Additionally, the in-universe ad established that the Imperial Palace was located in Imperial City,[131] retroactively establishing that the Palace's appearance in Marvel Comic's 1977 comic series was the first appearance of the city.[133] Despite containing a description of Imperial City, the city was not described as a planet-wide city in the The Roleplaying Game rulebook.[131]
On May 6, 1991, Timothy Zahn's novel Heir to the Empire released.[132] In the novel, Imperial City was established to be on the Planet Coruscant, with characters using the story usin the term "The Imperial City" to describe Coruscant, implying that the planet was an Ecumenopolis (a planet covered by a city),[145] which would be confirmed in later works.[31] In the 20th Anniversary Edition of the Heir to the Empire that included annotations from Zahn and Betsy Mitchell, Zhan annotated that

The Phantom Menace Read-Along Storybook and CD states that the scene in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace where Yoda, on behalf of the Jedi High Council, gives permission to Obi-Wan Kenobi to train Anakin Skywalker takes place at the Jedi Grand Temple (in Galactic City).[81] However, the 2016 edition of Star Wars: Complete Locations instead establishes the meeting happens on Naboo,[16] which is repeated in Star Wars: Complete Locations, New Edition, the 2025 edition of the book.[17] This article assumes the ladder sources to be correct, and that the event took place on Naboo.
Mace Windu 1 erroneously calls Coruscant a planet-wide city rather than Galactic City.[62]
Non-canonical material
- "Coruscant is made up of many, many different layers, all built on top of one another and each holding a variety of districts. It's like big, onion of cities."
