A corps was a large military formation used by various factions throughout galactic history. The term could also be used for administrative branches and services, such as an officer corps, diplomatic corps, or engineering corps. Operational corps included Grand Army of the Republic units such as the 41st Elite Corps and the 327th Star Corps.
Description
Administrative
Darth Vader gathers members of the stormtrooper corps
Corps was used to denote specific groups within a military branch. The Imperial Army used a variety of corps for their specialized army branches, such the Imperial Armor Corps and its subdivision, the Imperial Artillery Corps.[1] The Imperial Army also maintained a combat driver corps,[2] an Imperial Vehicle Corps,[3] the Army Air Corps, the Army Engineering Corps, and the Stormtrooper Corps.[1] The Stormtrooper Corps itself used corps to denote several of its stormtrooper branches, such as the range corps and the scout trooper corps.[4] Previously, the Grand Army of the Republic similarly used the flame trooper corps[5] and Ranger Corps.[6]
The Imperial Navy used corps within their administration as well, such as the logistics corps.[7] The First Order Navy maintained a Transport Corps.[8] The term was also used in less military organizations such as the Imperial Survey Corps.[9] A Starfighter Corps was an entire sub-branch of military units for starfighters, bombers, and other light craft.[10] Officer corps were used by various militaries for their officers, such as the Imperial Officer Corps[11] and Imperial Navy's officer corps,[1] or the rebel officer corps.[12]
Operational
A corps was a large military formation deployed in surface warfare. In the Grand Army of the Republic, a corps consisted of 36,864 clone troopers and was led by a Clone Marshal Commander and Jedi General. Each corps was divided into sixteen smaller divisions known as regiments, each led by a Clone Commander. During the First Battle of Geonosis, the Republic deployed eight corps of troopers to the planet.[13] The Imperial Army continued the use of corps in their forces, such as the 21st Nova Corps[14] and the 91st Mobile Reconnaissance Corps.[15] The First Order also made use of corps in their military forces, with an army corps composed of 36,000 stormtroopers.[16]
