- "It's too random to be random."
- ―Heert, on the growing rebellion
Heert was a human male Imperial officer who served as an Attendant of the Imperial Security Bureau of the Galactic Empire during the Imperial Era. Heert served as the assistant to ISB Supervisor and Lieutenant Dedra Meero of Investigations. He aided her when she was present at the ISB Central Office. He was later promoted to ISB Supervisor himself and, around 4 BBY, was assigned by Major Lio Partagaz to take over the investigation into the Axis network. However, by the Galactic Civil War, his efforts did not yield fruit until 1 BBY, when his coworker Lonni Jung was killed by Luthen Rael—the man behind "Axis"—and Rael himself was severely injured in a confrontation with Meero, who attempted to arrest him herself upon figuring out his identity.
After Meero was arrested upon suspicion of rebellion and espionage, Heert scrambled to locate Rael's missing assistant Kleya Marki, who infiltrated the Lina Soh Hospital and killed the injured Rael to prevent him from talking under interrogation. Heert managed to track Marki to a safehouse on Level 5124, but when he led an ISB Tactical team to raid the building, the man was killed by the Rebel Alliance droid K-2SO, ending his aspirations and investigations.
Biography
Meero's aide
Meero and Heert examine the records from Ferrix.
During the time of the Galactic Empire, Heert was an ISB Attendant who served as the aide to ISB Supervisor Dedra Meero[2] in the Investigations department[5] of the Imperial Security Bureau.[2] In 5 BBY,[6] he aided his superior in her office in the bureau headquarters on the planet Coruscant. During their investigation, Meero uncovered the presence of an Imperial N-S9 Starpath Unit, an item stolen from the Steergard Naval Yard, when reading reports of the Ferrix incident. As Steergard fell under their jurisdiction, she sent Heert to the office of Supervisor Blevin to request all further information regarding Ferrix. When the request was denied, Meero visited Blevin's office herself to discuss the matter.[2]
As they continued to investigate various locations such as Hosnian Prime, Meero ordered Heert to leave her office as the time was late. Heert refused to leave however, wanting to stay if Meero was as well. Heert reassured her when she claimed that she didn't know what she was doing. He listed events in different locations such as Kessel, Fondor, Jakku, Base Cay, and Steergard. However, Meero agreed with the view that the events were too scattered to be organized, held by Major Lio Partagaz.[4]
Heert again rebutted, claiming that Meero did not believe Partagaz. The lieutenant knew that if she were working against the Empire, she would disperse the activities and never climb the same fence twice, to which Heert replied that it was too random to be random. Meero then asked if they could check two more files each, to which Heert nodded, as the pair resumed their work.[4]
Heert and Meero both attended the emergency session called by Major Partagaz.
Shortly thereafter, the payroll for an entire Imperial sector was later stolen from an Imperial installation on the planet Aldhani. Numerous bureau staff, including Heert and his superior Meero, were then summoned back to the ISB conference room, where they were informed by Partagaz that they should tell their staff and families that they would not be going home. The major then told those assembled that he wanted every Star Sector and Planetary Emergency Retaliation plan in the building to be ready for presentation by midnight.[7]
The next day, Heert was present sat behind Meero at a meeting led by Colonel Wullf Yularen. The Colonel informed the staff present of the countermeasures being made following the Aldhani heist, including the introduction of the Public Order Resentencing Directive. During a discussion in Meero's office after the meeting, his superior expressed to the Attendant her belief that the attack on Aldhani was not a robbery, but rather that it was an announcement.[8]
Hunting Cassian Andor
Heert and Corv were led to Syril Karn's cubicle by Flob.
Some time later, Heert and his fellow ISB Attendant Corv were sent to the Imperial Bureau of Standards by Meero to bring Syril Karn for interrogation at the ISB central office. When Karn revealed during interrogation that he was unable to read the Ferrix report before being dismissed from his job in the Morlana System, Meero and Heert had to leave to attend another meeting elsewhere in the building. As the pair left, Corv remained behind to give Karn a copy of the report to read.[9]
During this meeting, Heert's superior requested additional resources to hunt down Cassian Jeron Andor, who had been identified as one of the two culprits of the Ferrix incident. Although Meero and her staff were unable to identify Luthen Rael, who they had codenamed "Axis" for his centrality in the plot they were investigating, she was nonetheless determined to hunt him down. Later that day, the ISB officers returned to the interrogation room. Meero determined that Karn's description of Rael was not of further use and left shortly thereafter, Heert falling in step behind her.[9]
Heert corroborated Meero's connection between Axis and the Aldhani heist with evidence.
Upon Meero's return to Coruscant from interrogating Salman Paak and Bix Caleen on Ferrix, Heert and Corv attended a meeting called by Major Partagaz with their superior. Meero discussed the list of Imperial equipment that Caleen had given after interrogation, which contained a targeting unit that was recovered from a safehouse operated by Maya Pei's rebel cell. Additionally, she was able to connect Axis to the events on Aldhani through Andor's return to Ferrix three days after the heist. When Partagaz stated that he believed the Aldhani connection to be a stretch, Heert brought up the fact that Caleen had revealed Andor was clean-shaven after his return. He further presented the fact that two soldiers at the Aldhani Garrison believed Andor looked similar to one of the rebels. Partagaz responded that the amplified interest made the connection to Aldhani worth following up.[10]
Plotting against Anto Kreegyr
When Meero entered her office the next day, Heert informed her that Imperial authorities had detained a rebel pilot using a stolen Imperial masking unit, and that Attendant Corv was checking if the unit was off of their list. Heert's superior ordered him to send Doctor Gorst to interrogate the prisoner on the Destroyer above Steergard where he was being held. He responded that he had already sent out Gorst, and asked if she wanted to go as well. She replied that there was no time and dismissed him from the room after congratulating him on his work.[10]
After the interrogation of the prisoner, Heert and Meero attended a small meeting with Partagaz, Lagret, and two other attendants. During his interrogation, the prisoner claimed that he did not contact anyone during his escape attempt. Heert informed the room that the masking unit had been stolen from the Imperial naval yard in Lozash the previous year. Supervisor Lonni Jung and his attendant then arrived late to the meeting, having been offsite. Partagaz informed them about the capture of the rebel pilot, who was part of Anto Kreegyr's rebel cell. The major informed Jung that he believed that Kreegyr was unaware of the pilot's capture, and that the prisoner had revealed a planned raid on the Spellhaus Imperial power station.[10]
When Jung warned that the pilot would be counted missing soon, Lagret proposed destroying the ship and making it seem accidental. Heert's superior proposed the idea of fouling the ship, planting the pilot's body and allowing the ship to drift into traffic near Kafrene. As Meero and Heert left the conference chamber to see to this, Partagaz ordered Lagret and Jung to schedule a meeting with Military Intelligence about the planned raid on Spellhaus.[10]
Heert was later present in the conference chamber when it was confirmed that Anto Kreegyr's cell had taken the bait. He handed Meero a datapad from which she reported the situation to Major Partagaz. He left soon after with his superior.[11]
Heert was present in Dedra Meero's office when she was contacted by Attendant Corv and Prefect Vanis Tigo from Ferrix, who informed the supervisor of the death of Andor's mother, Maarva Carassi Andor, and that preparations were being made by the locals for her funeral. After Meero ordered Tigo to authorise the locals' request to close Rix Road for the ceremony, Heert asked how much time they had before the ceremony. Corv informed them that they had two days, in accordance with the local custom of "bricking" the deceased.[12] He was not present with Meero when she travelled to Ferrix soon after.[13]
Rising up the ranks
Heert attended ISB board meetings after his promotion to supervisor.
After Meero's reassignment to the Ghorman project, Heert was promoted to ISB Supervisor by Major Partagaz and assigned to oversight of the Axis investigation.[14] By 3 BBY, he sat on the ISB Board, taking Blevin's former seat in the conference chamber. Heert took an interest into raids performed by fellow Supervisor Captain Lagret against rebel forces, believing that some of the retrieved restricted Imperial weapons had been sourced from the Axis supply chain. When Major Partagaz chided both supervisors in a board meeting for a lack of results ten days after the raids, Supervisor Jung raised the issue that several supervisors had too many suspects in custody to process.[15]
Following the meeting, Heert's former superior Dedra Meero expressed annoyance that he had not informed her of the investigation. After rejecting her promise of giving him all the glory if he allowed her to contribute, Heert then caught up with Jung, and thanked him for his contribution during the board meeting, for which he promised to buy him lunch as repayment. During this lunch, he informed Jung that Meero had been transferred to running Ghorman.[15]
A few days later, Partagaz pulled Heert and Jung aside to inform them that Military Intelligence wished to expand the expertise of interrogations specialist Doctor Gorst into a full program, headquartered in a Coruscant facility previously belonging to the Imperial Navy. The major informed the pair that they were to represent ISB interests in the program, which Heert claimed was an honor, to the surprise of the others. Consequently, Jung placed the responsibility of leading the project onto Heert.[16]
Later, Heert, Jung, and Lagret all attended a party hosted by Chandrilan aristocrat Davo Sculdun at his gallery on Coruscant. They were among the guests invited to view his collection of purchased artifacts.[16]
Personality and traits
- "Has it ever crossed your mind that Partagaz put me on Axis because I don't seek glory?"
- ―Heert to Dedra Meero
A human male, Heert had dark hair, and brown eyes.[2] He[3] was enthusiastic and strongly loyal to the Empire and his commanding officer Dedra Meero, remaining behind after hours to continue to assist her in reviewing records.[4] He believed that he did not seek glory in his work.[15]
Equipment
Like other ISB Attendants, Heert wore a gray Imperial officer's uniform with black flared breeches, black leather boots, two code cylinders and a rank insignia plaque with two blue tiles.[2] Additionally, he sometimes wore a black Imperial kepi with an officer's disk alongside black leather gloves.[9] Following his promotion to supervisor, Heert wore a white uniform with black breeches and boots, alongside a rank insignia plaque with three blue tiles, and two code cylinders.[15] At Davo Sculdan's party, he wore silver collar tabs, epaulettes, and aiguillettes on his white tunic, and paired it with black slacks and shoes.[16] During the raid on the Axis safehouse, Heert wielded a Power 5 blaster pistol and wore white armor similar to the ISB Tactical agents he operated alongside.[17]
