"That's for Hosnian Prime!"
―A Resistance pilot after destroying an enemy fighter[20]

Hosnian Prime was a planet in the Hosnian system of the Core Worlds, located along the Corellian Trade Spine. By 28 ABY, it served as the capital of the New Republic and the headquarters of the New Republic Senate.

In 34 ABY during the Cold War with the First Order, that sought to rid the galaxy of the New Republic which it saw as illegitimate, the First Order used its superweapon, Starkiller Base, to destroy Hosnian Prime and all other planetary bodies in the system. The superweapon caused the ignition of Hosnian Prime's core, transforming the planet into a star in a pocket nova.

Description

Hosnian Prime was a cosmopolitan world[21] located in the Hosnian system,[4] on the edge of the Core Worlds.[21] It lay in grid square M-12 of the Standard Galactic Grid[5] and was located along the Corellian Trade Spine.[7] Hosnian Prime shared its name with Hosnian Gravity Parks.[22]

History

The Great "Peace"

"But there's no slavery on Hosnian Prime."
"Of course not. The Republic doesn't allow slavery. They do allow Czerka Corporation to do business, though, and naturally Czerka can bring in whatever workers it wants."
Obi-Wan Kenobi and Pax Maripher[9]

Hosnian Prime was a planet with a politically-minded culture that was a member of the Galactic Republic. By the High Republic Era, the planet had a reputation for its political intrigues[23] and boasted shipyards that produced vessels for the Republic, such as the Longbeam-class corvette Aurora IX.[13] During the Nihil conflict, it was represented by the well-respected Ghirra Starros, who secretly became an agent of Eye of the Nihil Marchion Ro,[24] in order to play both sides of the Republic-Nihil conflict so as to retain her power.[25]

By the waning years of the Republic, Hosnian Prime hosted a factory complex run by Czerka Arms, an arms manufacturer whose activities included the use of slavery. Rahara Wick was born into slavery on the planet, working in mines deep underneath the surface.[9]

Age of the Empire

Mozeen Parapa: "My tech-masters tracked thee signal toah Freerago's."
Han Solo: "The diner orbiting Hosnian Prime? That seems…random."
Sana Starros: "Whoever has the Phylanx must be holed up there to keep a low profile and plot their next move. We can stake it out in shifts."
―Mozeen Parapa, Han Solo, and Sana Starros discuss Parapa's last tracked signal of the Phylanx Redux Transmitter[26]

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, Plas Lelkot, the surgeon consul of Hosnian Prime, hid refugees in his own chateau. Due to his support for the Rebel Alliance, he was imprisoned at the bleak Ashmead's Lock prison on the planet Kashyyyk.[15]

Between 12 BBY and 11 BBY, the Inquisitor known as the Fifth Brother faced Jedi Knight Cal Kestis and Nightsister Merrin on Hosnian Prime.[27]

Around 3 BBY, Han Solo had a run-in with Torrian security guards on Hosnian Prime which left a purplish stain on his shirt. Not long after, Solo and Chewbacca went to the Freerago's Satellite Diner and Motel, a satellite diner and motel in orbit of Hosnian Prime, to retrieve a device known as the Phylanx Redux Transmitter for the crime lord Mozeen Parapa. The pair were successful in their attempts, with help from the bounty hunter Sana Starros.[26]

After returning to Imperial space following the Battle of Yavin, Imperial Senior Lieutenant Iden Versio debriefed and spent time on Hosnian Prime recovering from injuries she suffered after her TIE fighter was damaged in the Death Star's explosion before crash landing on Yavin's fourth moon.[19]

New Republic Era

"A mouse droid tells me that the New Republic is setting up a new flight academy on Hosnian Prime. And I hear you'll be a pupil there, is that right?"
Conder Kyl, to Temmin Wexley[10]

Imperial Captain Terisa Kerrill later sent Titan Squadron to retrieve Agent Thorn from an orbital outpost above the planet. After a successful rescue, Thorn revealed the location of a New Republic convoy near Desevro carrying workers for Project Starhawk.[11]

In 5 ABY, the Rebel Alliance's successor government, the New Republic, operated a veteran hospital in Darropolis. There, the New Republic soldier Dade Hetkins received treatment and a cybernetic leg to replace the one lost following the Battle of Endor. Doctor Arsad supervised Hetkins' recovery and assigned him the prototype therapy droid QT-9.[15] Around the time of the Battle of Jakku, Yuprin Arlo represented Hosnian Prime in the New Republic's Galactic Senate. Another native of Hosnian Prime, Sondiv Sella, served as a councilman in the Senate.[10]

Republic City was the capital of Hosnian Prime, and therefore, the New Republic seat of government.

Following the Battle of Jakku, the New Republic set up a flight academy on Hosnian Prime. Wedge Antilles, a New Republic pilot was made its head instructor and offered a job as an instructor to Norra Wexley, who accepted. Norra's son, Temmin Wexley, was also to attend the academy as a pupil.[10]

By 28 ABY,[28] Hosnian Prime had been voted the capital of the New Republic, and hosted individuals from many species including humans, Wookiees, and Gungans. By that stage, two major factions had emerged in the Senate: the Populists, who wanted worlds to maintain considerable autonomy; and the Centrists, who favored a stronger central government. That year, the senatorial complex was damaged during the Napkin Bombing. The bomb had been planted by Arliz Hadrassian, a former Imperial TIE fighter pilot and Imperial Security Bureau officer who had become the leader of the Amaxine warriors, a militia that served as a front for the First Order, a remnant of the Old Empire.[6]

It was on Hosnian Prime that Populist Senator Leia Organa's true parentage as the daughter of Darth Vader was revealed. This information was publicly disclosed by her Centrist friend senator Ransolm Casterfo, who had been manipulated by Lady Carise Sindian, a secret agent of the First Order. The Populist Senator Tai-Lin Garr was later assassinated by Hadrassian while campaigning as First Senator in one of Hosnian Prime's parks. Sindian later framed Casterfo for the crime after he supported Organa's report about the existence of threats to the New Republic. Organa subsequently announced her intention to resign from the Senate and founded the Resistance, a private military force dedicated to protecting the Republic.[6]

In 29 ABY,[29] the droid BB-8 was built on Hosnian Prime.[30]

Hosnian Cataclysm

"All remaining systems will bow before the First Order and will remember this as the last day of the Republic."
―First Order General Armitage Hux[4]
The First Order destroyed Hosnian Prime, and along with it, the New Republic.

The First Order destroyed Hosnian Prime, and along with it, the New Republic.

In 34 ABY,[31] the First Order, believing the Republic to be an illegitimate government incapable of maintaining order in the galaxy, targeted the Republic-controlled Hosnian system with a superweapon known as Starkiller Base in an effort to destroy them. The Starkiller turned its sights towards Hosnian Prime and incinerated them with a beam of phantom energy.[18] Chancellor Lanever Villecham, Resistance commander Korr Sella, countless senators, and all the inhabitants of the Hosnian system were victims in the destruction of the system.[4] In the resulting pocket nova, Hosnian Prime became a second star in its system.[18]

Inhabitants

Hosnian Prime's inhabitants celebrated Equinox Day, a holiday unique to the planet commemorating the beginning of autumn.[6] By the High Republic Era, Hosnian Prime was considered a center of style and elegance that was second only to the Republic capital of Coruscant in terms of political intrigue, as well as for backstabbing.[23] It was the planet that produced Ghirra Starros,[24] a major political actor during the Nihil conflict[32] whose allegiance to Marchion Ro seemed to usher in a Nihil-supporting era on Hosnian Prime, even despite its position in the Core.[23] Afterward, however, the planet would return to its Republic loyalties[9] and even serve as a major baston for the New Republic.[4]

Cities on Hosnian Prime included its capital Republic City[6] and Darropolis.[15] Besides the New Republic senatorial complex, other locations on Hosnian Prime included the hanging gardens,[6] the offices of the Galaxy Beacon,[12] and the Hosnian Prime Academy of Law Enforcement.[8] Caf beans were roasted at gourmet artisanal factories on Hosnian Prime by culinary droids.[26]

Behind the scenes

Hosnian Prime was created for the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, the first installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy.[4] Information about the planet and its status within the New Republic was elaborated upon in the reference book Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary.[1]

During the development of Episode VII, some individuals at Bad Robot Productions wanted the planet destroyed in the film to be Coruscant, the galaxy's galactic capital that featured heavily in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. According to Lucasfilm Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo, representatives of Lucasfilm were reticent to this idea, since Coruscant was planned to appear in other projects besides The Force Awakens. As a compromise, Hosnian Prime was created to fill the role of the New Republic capital.[33][34]

In a different tweet, Hidalgo explained that the destruction of the Hosnian system was visible from across the galaxy because of the vast quantities of energy released from Starkiller Base creating a temporary rip in sub-hyperspace.[35]
