The suppression of Ghorman,[2] also known as the rebellion on Ghorman,[9] was a covert campaign initiated by the Galactic Empire by the year 4 BBY. The operation was centered around the planet Ghorman, which the Empire had discovered was home to a depository of kalkite, a material necessary for reactor lenses[2] on the DS-1 Orbital Battle Station.[10] The gouge-mining was set to be an invasive, destructive progress that would call for the planet's suppression and abandonment. Planning for the campaign was carried out by the Ghorman project thinktank, who started with the work of the Ministry of Enlightenment and its anti-Ghorman whispering campaign designed to turn galactic opinion against Ghorman to justify the Empire's actions against the Ghorman population. By that time, Ghorman had already been subject to the ministry's propaganda. Furthermore, it had been the site of controversary thanks to the cutoff of Ghorman shipping lanes[1] and Ghorman Debates.[11]
At the suggestion of ISB Supervisor Dedra Meero,[1] who would be given control over the project,[12] the Empire allowed the local Ghorman Front to grow bolder[6] so as to give the Empire an excuse to crackdown, with the Empire also arranging a false flag firebombing of the Ghorman Naval Terminal[7] in 2 BBY.[5] Shortly thereafter, events culminated in the Ghorman Massacre,[8] where the Empire slaughtered peaceful protesters[13] who had taken to the streets in protest to the Empire's crackdown.[8] The Empire painted the Ghormans as the aggressors and carried out the arrest of Ghorman Senator Dasi Oran, who begged his fellow senators to take notice of his world's fate. While many senators accepted the Imperial narrative, Senator Mon Mothma—herself already a secret rebel organizer—took to the Imperial Senate to condemn the massacre as a genocide and declare Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine as a monster. Afterward, she escaped from the Senate[3] and officially formed the Alliance to Restore the Republic.[14]
