A viewport, also known as a window[2] or porthole,[3] was a framework that contained a pane of transparent material and was built into a wall to admit light. Starships and space stations were commonly equipped with viewports, as were ground-based structures.[2] A viewport embedded in a rooftop was referred to as a skylight.[4]

The main component of both viewscreens and portholes aboard starships was the alloy transparisteel, which were made of the mineral lommite, the primary export of the planet Eriadu.[3] Glass was also used.[5]
