"What if I'd let your neglect drive me insane? Imagine that. Look back just months ago when you could easily ignore me. Imagine. Imagine I'd cracked under the weight of your neglect. Imagine I'd cracked and wasn't here now to pick up the pieces."
―Eedy Karn, to Syril Karn[5]

Eedy Karn was a human female who was the mother of Deputy Inspector Syril Karn and lived on Level 91 on Coruscant. In 5 BBY, Karn was surprised by a visit from her son, Syril Karn. Disappointed by him being fired from his job as a corpo, she called in a favor with Uncle Harlo to find him a new job. Through her connections with Harlo, Syril was able to get a new position in Fuel Purity at the Imperial Bureau of Standards, but she was unable to dissuade him from his obsession with Cassian Andor, which lead to his involvement in the Ferrix Riot.

Calling in a favor

"What is it you'll be asking for?"
"Someone who will take you on, Syril."
"Setting the bar high, are we?"
"Uncle Harlo will know what's best."
―Eedy and Syril Karn quarrel about Eedy trying to find Syril and job[6]

Eedy Karn was a human female[2] who hailed from the capital planet Coruscant[1] and lived in an apartment on Level 91 of Imperial City.[2] She eventually met a man who fancied himself an adventurer.[4] They had a son named Syril Karn, who she raised to succeed.[3] She also met a man named Harlo who became a friend of the family.[7] However, because of his adventurousness, Syril's father disappeared one day, leaving Eedy alone with her son. It was only the charity of Uncle Harlo that kept them going.[4] In 5 BBY,[8] following her son's involvement in the Ferrix incident, he was fired and sent home disgraced. While she was at home, Syril rang the doorbell and she arrived to the door. She was shocked by his appearance there and slapped him across the face, before embracing him. She noticed a neighbor watching them and derided them for staring, then ushered Syril inside.[2]

Later, Syril sat down in[6] the dining nook,[9] slouching and staring into his bowl. Eedy pointed out how he was presenting himself,[6] while she poured crunchies cereal and blue milk into his bowl.[9] She told Syril that his posture wasn't projecting that of a leader, and implied that this was the reason for his failure. She said that she had wished they had seen each other more when he was still flourishing. He said that she could have come any time he wanted, to which she replied that an open invitation wasn't a real invitation, and suspected that Syril had no real prospects for the future. Syril mentioned that he had an open room for her, stating that she could have visited anytime. Eedy went back to the subject at hand and insisted on him answering her question of whether or not he had any future prospects. When he said he'll find a way, she said she'd call Uncle Harlo, for a favor. Syril mentioned that it wasn't a certainty that Harlo would remember her, or would even talk to her. Eedy was certain that Harlo would respond and respect her for having waited and being so prudent with her request. When Syril asked what she'd be asking for, Eedy responded that she would be asking Harlo to find him a job, stating that he'd know what's best.[6]

When Eedy talked with Uncle Harlo, she explained that Syril was sorry for what had happened and that his blunder would serve as a learning opportunity for him. Harlo told her that he felt police work wasn't the right path form Syril and that he needed time to think about what field to place Syril in. The next time Eedy and Syril sat down together, she told him that he shouldn't have doubted Uncle Harlo and relayed his concerns about his career choice. Syril sarcastically retorted that Harlo didn't know him that much, to which Eedy reminded him who's fault that was. She recommended Syril learn something from Harlo, and mentioned that he hadn't figured out what field he'd like Syril to be in. She then recounted the conversation she had with him. Syril interjected that he had overheard already heard it, but only Eedy's side of it.[6]

An ungrateful son

Luckily, Uncle Harlo had come through and secured Syril and interview with Flob of the Imperial Bureau of Standards. The morning of his interview, Eedy called him to the dining nook and commented on his suit that had a particularly high collar. Syril stated that it was just a brown suit, unaware of the implications. Eedy was quick to note that Uncle Harlo's influence was nothing to be trifled with and that Syril was representing the family, not just himself. When he stated that he had his collar raised, she described how his high collar reflected his lack of confidence and his need for approval. That was when they were interrupted by a news report about the recent heist on Aldhani. Syril asked what had happened, she responded that it was just rabble, and that the perpetrators would regret it.[10]

Because of Syril's new job in Fuel Purity at the Imperial Bureau of Standards, he had been coming home late and getting up early. Eedy would press his uniforms and prepare him two meals a day. When he was away she had been searching and cleaning his room and looking through Syril's private box. One night, Eedy prepared dinner for Syril and had left it out despite what he had told him. The next morning, she walked into the dining nook, noting Syril's early start and his trimmed hair, asking if he had news to tell her. He only responded by telling her not to leave food out for him, she told him that it was because she worried he wasn't getting enough to eat. Syril then accused her of searching his room and looking through his private box. Upset at his rudeness, Eedy lectured her son on how much she's done for him and how he, in return, has not been acting like a good son. She surmised about the toll his neglect could have had on her. After loudly slurping up his cereal, Syril stated that he had been promoted. A smile grew on Eedy's face and she said she knew his employers would see his promise. He said he'd be required to work more hours, but she just said that Harlo would be so pleased, embraced her son, and poured him some more cereal.[5]

A distracted son

One night, Eedy was woken up by a call for Syril on the viewscreen. She opened up Syril's door and woke him up to get the call. She watched as Syril was contacted by Linus Mosk, a former sergeant at Syril's former job at Preox-Morlana. Mosk greeted Syril and then apologized for bothering the family. Syril seemed confused, but them saw Eedy standing in the corner of the room. He shooed her away, to which she walked a little down a hallway before walking back to eavesdrop on their conversation. Although distracted by his work, Mosk was able to relay information about Cassian Andor, a person that Syril was eager to learn more about. The connection to Mosk was spotty, making it hard for Syril to properly communicate with him, but through it all Mosk was able to detail Syril on the death and future funeral of Andor's mother Maarva Carassi Andor. Despite Syril's attempt to fix the connection, he wasn't able to get information on when it would happen, only that they should meet to discuss further. As the connection was finally cut, Eedy mocked Syril on his prior, supposedly successful job, and went back to sleep.[11]

Later, Eedy heads off on the breezeway while, unbeknownst to her, Syril watches from a level below.[12] While she was gone he unlocked a safe in her house,[11] and amongst a cache of jewelry, he grabbed a tin[12] and emptied the credits from it, before returning it back to its tray and swiveling it shut.[11] Syril used the credits to take a shuttle ferry into Ferrix in order to attend Maarva's funeral and find Andor. In the ensuing riot, Syril was able to save Dedra Meero, an ISB Supervisor, from a relentless crowd.[13]

Dinner with a Syril

"This game ends now. You want Syril in you life? You will think before you speak. I'll make sure he visits twice a month. I'll make sure that he calls you. I will guarantee a level of engagement, but it will be inversely proportional to the volume of anxiety you generate in our lives."
"That's quite a mouthful."
"I'm not done."
―Dedra Meero laying down guidelines to Eedy's involvement in Syril's life.[6]

By 4 BBY, one year after the Ferrix riot,[14] Syril had formed a relationship with Meero, living with her in a shared apartment. There had been plans made for Eedy to visit them, but they were cancelled. One day, after arriving home and seeing Syril distressed, Dedra made it a point to not cancel again,[15] and so Eedy was invited over for dinner[4] at Meero's place.[16] The next day,[15] Eedy arrived at the apartment, ringing the doorbell multiple times. Syril greeted her, they embraced, and she walked in. As she did, she saw Meero standing there[4] with a smile.[17] Syril introduced Dedra, and she extends her hand to greet Eedy saying it was pleasure to finally meet her. Eedy did not return the favor, instead focusing on the finally in Meero's statement. She commented on the apartment, comparing it to a palace, and Dedra said it was a home. Eedy mentioned that Meero looked nothing like what she expected and Syril got her coat. She commented on the courtesy she was rarely given before Syril asked what she'd like to drink. She requested spiced tea, to which Syril questioned when she'd started drinking spiced tea. She said that she'd seen him so rarely, and that her taste had changed. Syril offered to go to a shop downstairs to get it, but Eedy insisted that he not leave. Seeing Syril's reaction, Meero tried to describe where the shop was, but Eedy relented, saying she didn't want to see her son disappear again. Instead, Eedy requested Meero to show her around the apartment[4] before wandering off to explore.[17]

Later, they'd all started to eat around a table. Eedy regaled stories about Syril and their family to Meero while getting[4] fondue[18] from its dish. She dripped some of the sauce on the table, which upset Syril, but Meero quieted his nerves, allowing Eedy to continue. She mentioned how Syril's father left and how Uncle Harlo was what kept them together. Meero commented that it must have been a hard time, and said that she'd heard the story from Syril before. Eedy said that she was excited to know that Syril had finally met someone who he could talk to. Syril asked if she wanted more sauce, but Eedy loudly exclaimed that she would get there. Seeing Syril deflate, Eedy commented on how he'd become embarrassed and how he didn't like being called delicate. Eedy then asked about Meero's past. She mentioned that her family were criminals and that she was raised in an Imperial kinder-block. Eedy responed, saying there was nothing delicate about her upbringing. Meero said that she had everything she needed, to which Eedy pointed out the lack of motherly love. Meero responded which by saying that she didn't know what she was missing before Syril interupted their conversation by loudly stabbing his food to dip it in the sauce.[4]

Eventually they reach[4] dessert, to which Eedy happily mashes up her serving,[17] much to Syril's dismay. She said that she liked the dessert, and Meero mentioned that it was Syril that told her she liked them. She said that the dessert was one of the pleasures of Coruscant. This lead into her commenting on Syril's past as a corporate law enforcement officer at Preox-Morlana. She implied that his decision was a mistake that he eventually recovered from by seeing the benefits of Coruscant. Upset by this, Syril defended his previous job and threw his napkin on the table in anger, leaving. She looked at Meero, still playing with her food, and said that Meero would toughen him up. Meero had something different in mind, she laid out a mandatory set of guidelines that would define Eedy's relationship with her and Syril. Meero said that she would ensure Syril's regular involvement in Eedy's life so long as she thought before she spoke and didn't bring them so much anxiety. She then criticized Eedy for bringing up Uncle Harlo so much given that she was well aware of his criminal background from the ISB files she had on him. Following this, they shifted the conversation to Syril's achievements in his job. Meero asked Eedy if she wanted more caf, and she said please, referring to Meero by her first name. When Syril walks back in, Eedy told Syril about the conversation she was just having with Meero and how she wasn't suprised at all by his success. Syril seemed confused by this, and got up to get more cakes, on the request of Meero. She passed a slight smile to Eady and sipped her caf.[4]

Personality and traits

Eedy Karn was an overbearing, lecturing,[19] and judgmental mother to her son Syril. She was harsh and belittling to her son even during breakfast time.[20] She mistreated Syril, scolding him about everything from his slouching to his clothes.[7] Even in a time where he was clearly struggling, Eedy repeatedly doubted and dismissed him.[21] She was intent on exerting control on her son's life,[7] wanting Syril to fit in and make a good impression in order to protect her standing within the community.[21] Despite all this, she still loved Syril in her own way.[7] She had raised her son to succeed[3] and acted the way she did in order to see that success in her child. Ultimately Eedy was devastated when learning of the Ghorman Massacre which she (correctly) guessed had resulted in her son’s death.[20]

Equipment

She often wore nice clothing, usually in warm colors,[2][6] and had her hair perfectly coiffed.[22] She had a cache of jewelry that included pendant earrings to refine her look.[12]

Behind the scenes

Karn first appeared in "Aldhani,"[2] the fourth episode of television series Star Wars: Andor,[23] which aired September 28, 2022.[24] She was portrayed by Kathryn Hunter.[2] In an Instagram post that she later took down, Hunter confirmed she would be returning for Andor Season Two.[25]

Hunter and Kyle Soller, the actor who played Syril Karn, collaborated on a story about the latter's father, which involved him leaving early on in an acrimonious and horrible way. They thought Eedy being wronged catalyzed how she raised Karn. The actors believed that Eedy's anger, grief, disappointment, and frustration of him leaving filtered into Syril.[26]
