B'ankora

The B'ankora were a sentient species of ruminants in the galaxy. Their homeworld suffered a cataclysmic collision with a meteor^[2] at some point before around 1300 BBY,^[3] which led the Galactic Republic to give them a small sanctuary, that eventually became the B'ankor Refuge, on their capital planet Coruscant. Chasen Piian, a Supreme Chancellor at the time of the Republic granted the land in perpetuity to the surviving members of the species so they could resume their sedentary lifestyle with humble homes, fields, and trails.^[1]

The B'ankora continued to live on the land for over fifty generations. After the rise of the Galactic Empire, their Coruscant allotment was seized after an Imperial edict citing eminent domain was enacted and an Imperial energy research center affiliated with Project Celestial Power was build on their former lands. The entire species, around ten thousand individuals, was relocated to Parau VI, a dying world located in the Mid Rim which featured similar characteristics to those of the B'ankor Refuge.^[1] Not more than nineteen years later, the B'ankora had become extinct as a result of the Empire's actions.^[2]

Behind the scenes

The B'ankora first appeared in Catalyst: A Rogue One Novel, written by James Luceno^[1] and published on November 15, 2016^[4] as a prequel to the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.^[1]

The 2016 reference book Star Wars: Rogue One: Rebel Dossier, written by Jason Fry, originally dated the species being granted the B'ankor Refuge to 131 BBY,^[5] but in Catalyst it is stated that they had lived in the Refuge "for more than fifty generations" and had planted a copse of gargantuan trees "centuries earlier" by the time of the novel.^[1] 2023's Star Wars: Timelines later instead placed the event to 1300 BBY.^[3] Because Timelines is the newer source and it's date lines up better with what is established in Catalyst, this article assumes it to be correct.
