Behind the scenes

In the 1973 treatment and the 1974 rough draft of the script for A New Hope, Alderaan was the name of the capital of the New Galactic Empire. In the 1975 second draft, Alderaan is where Darth Vader holds Deak Starkiller prisoner and in the 1975 third draft, Alderaan is where Vader holds Leia Organa prisoner. The treatment described it as a "city-planet" and the rough, second, and third drafts described it as a gas giant that resembled Bespin, with a city that resembled Cloud City on it.[1]

The original name in the second draft of A New Hope for what would become Alderaan was Ogana Major. Aquilae, Utapau and Ophuchi were also considered as names for worlds partially corresponding to Alderaan.[1]
