Plot summary
The Ship Consumed by Asteroids
Qui-Gon Jinn of the Jedi Order meditates aboard a Consular-class light cruiser when he is interrupted by the shouts of his Padawan learner Obi-Wan Kenobi. Jinn assumes the younger Jedi's urgent pleas are indicative of imminent danger, but instead Kenobi reveals that the ship for whom they are responding to a distress call is fascinating for it appears to be thousands of years old. Always instilling a lesson in his Padawan, Qui-Gon heads with Kenobi to the cockpit. There, the men find that the massive starship in question is covered in massive rocks as if consumed by asteroids.
As the pair prepare to board the ancient ship, Qui-Gon reminds his Padawan of patience and to temper his enthusiasm given the context of responding to the distress call of a group of archaeologists and to treat them with open hearts and minds to help allay their fear. Within the ancient ship, the Jedi are greeted by the Iakaru Leeka, the Cerean Pol-Adi and the human Tamanuki who have lost their fourth companion, a Caphex archaeologist named Shanto somewhere in the ship they believe is haunted.
The archaeologists explain that they arrived at the site two days prior after months of preparation to explore, map, and catalogue the many relics which may exist on such an old ship. Even as they tell their tale to the Jedi, they have no idea of the origins of the ship, its affiliations, nor its story. Nevertheless, they are grateful for the pristine, untouched, condition in which Shanto discovered the wreckage. According to his team, Shanto had been researching the records of an old pirate crew who had once visited the ship, but fled before taking anything.
Once the archaeologists arrived, they explain, they flooded the ship with breathable air and began setting up their base camp in the hold. The impatient Shanto decided to take a peek ahead, beyond the artificial lighting the team set up. With his colleagues trailing somewhat behind, Shanto's light flickered out, terrifying his team. They fled back to their camp and sent out their distress call.
The Haunted Corridors
Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon set out to investigate Shanto's disappearance. In response to a query from Kenobi of whether the ship really is haunted, Jinn reminds the young man that everyone is haunted by the ghosts within them that must be embraced. Nevertheless, both Jedi sense terror through the Force and maintain their guard. They do not register the large, tentacled creature lurking above them.
The Jedi find some footprints in the dust, but Jinn soon detects incoming danger. A tentacle knocks Kenobi's lightsaber out of his hand and the massive oclatar to whom the tentacle belongs lunges at the Padawan with its gaping maw. Jinn pushes Kenobi back, sending him flying through a small opening between panels. The Jedi then uses the force to calm the oclatar, convincing it to retreat.
Qui-Gon Jinn checks in on Obi-Wan, who landed within a massive shrine. Jinn recognizes the iconography as that of the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door, a near-extinct dark side sect. Although the majority of their membership was eliminated during the early High Republic Era, Qui-Gon mentions that he once met a member when he was a Padawan himself on his first trip to Jedha City.
Pursuit in the Holy City
Years before Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi find the shrine on the ancient ship, a much younger Qui-Gon arrives to the holy moon of Jedha aboard a T-6 shuttle with his Master, Dooku. Jinn is surprised of the lack of solemnity in such a holy place, but his Master explains that the diversity of thought and creed leads to variety in how people celebrate the Force. Dooku explains that he brought his Padawan there not for a pilgrimage, but due to threat he discovered while researching ancient sects. He believes that there may be information on an artifact of considerable danger located within the temple of the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door. He also explains some of the history of the Brotherhood, including their philosophy of careful neutrality in using the dark side of the Force for neither good nor evil purposes, and how they were destroyed during the Battle of Jedha.
Dooku brings his Padawan to a contact, a member of the Guardians of the Whills known as Elena Yoph, who has volunteered to serve as the expedition leader and has leads on where the secret underground temple may be located. Dooku then nonchalantly points out to his Padawan that they have been followed throughout their journey and tasks him with searching through the Force to find their stalker. Jinn finds the threat, and Dooku recognizes that the pursuer is dressed as a member of the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door. With a warning of the many illusions members of the sect could deploy, he allows Jinn to pursue the fleeing interloper.
Qui-Gon chases the member of the Brotherhood through the city streets. Just as he is about to grab their clothing, they throw boxes in his way, but as the crowd thickens, the target vanishes. Jinn returns to his Master, and Dooku ponders whether the Brotherhood is not quite as extinct as he thought. In spite of the potentially increased danger, Dooku is steadfast in his goal to find the artifact before the interloper, so the trio continues onward.
The Ruins of a Temple
At the ruins of the former temple of the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door, Dooku, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Elena Yoph examine the undisturbed site. Dooku suspects that because of the pervading atmosphere of the dark side, nobody was comfortable claiming the land in the intervening centuries. The pair of Jedi use the Force to lift the rubble, revealing a hitherto concealed doorway and staircase into the secret underground of the temple.
Dooku leads his Padawan into the dark passage. The older Jedi is soon attacked by slithering vines and is rescued by Qui-Gon with a swift swing of his lightsaber. Deeper in the temple, they find more peace in spite of the darkness. This paradox inspires a conversation about how different practices of spiritual groups, including those of the Jedi, are likely to make others feel uncomfortable. Dooku reiterates that Jedi must treat all others as equals, including those of faiths which differ from Jedi dogma.
Qui-Gon soon senses the arrival of their former pursuer. The mysterious figure appears to attack Elena, leading Qui-Gon to rush towards them with his blade. In the disorientation created by the interloper, Qui-Gon accidentally runs into Elena, making an opening for the attacker to escape once more.
In the aftermath, the three come to realize there likely is not information for finding the artifact within the temple. In the meantime, Dooku asks his Padawan to seek guidance from the Force and remain patient, for if it is meant to be, there will be a confrontation with their opponent someday in the future.
The Nest and the Door
Back on the ancient ship, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon explore deeper within the cavernous rooms. Although Kenobi is confident they have solved the mystery of Shanto's disappearance given the presence of the oclatar, Qui-Gon senses there is more to the place than simply an abandoned vessel. Obi-Wan soon senses a shadowy figure lurking in the darkness, only for it to vanish. He tells his Master it was as if they are being watched by something that is not really there.
The Jedi find a scrap of fabric that appears to be part of Shanto's uniform. Above them, a chitter alerts them to the numerous oclatars nesting on the ceiling. The pair flee down a hallway to relative safety. They eventually come across a massive door with a complex lock. Qui-Gon decides to attempt to open it, realizing it is not an abandoned ship, but the tomb of the founder of the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door, Sarasti Thel. Thus, the artifact Dooku sought may be behind that door. Jinn tasks his Padawan with guarding him and decides to comfort him with the story of his second encounter with the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door.
The Snatcher in the Rye
Several years after his time on Jedha, now Jedi Knight Qui-Gon Jinn travels to the arboreal city of Müch, on the planet Cerosha. He hears a distant commotion and races to it. He finds a massive hexapedal beast threatening to attack a human youngling. Brandishing his lightsaber, he encourages the child to back away to safety while he takes on the creature. It throws him back, but Qui-Gon is able to recover and use the Force to throw it into a wall. This scares the creature enough for it to retreat up a tree. The youngling, who did not flee as Qui-Gon instructed, introduces themself as Peroka. They explain that the creature is known colloquially as the Snatcher and is suspected to be responsible for a series of recent disappearances.
Peroka leads Qui-Gon to various townsfolk who provide him with information about the disappearances. They tell him that the attacks started about a week prior, had taken several younglings, and that it aligns with a myth of monsters that steal naughty children.
After gathering the information, Qui-Gon plans to set off for the Snatcher. Peroka wants to join, but Qui-Gon protests given the keen danger. He believes there are multiple Snatchers and that their pack must have been triggered by some outside force into their recent hunting behaviors.
At night, Qui-Gon awaits for the arrival of a Snatchers and pursues it through the forest to a cave. He is followed by Peroka, however. Qui-Gon reluctantly allows the youngling to join him as it is likely the safest option at this point.
The two descend into the depths of the cave where they find the iconography Jinn recognizes as belonging to the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door. This realization allows Jinn to conclude that the Snatchers are using the temple as a nest following some disturbance. He soon hears a voice in the distance. He and Peroka follow it to a man trapped in some organic webbing.
Qui-Gon releases the man only for him to be struck by recognition: It is the same member of the Brotherhood he encountered on Jedha. Qui-Gon's prejudices towards the sect's use of the dark side get the better of him, and he accuses the man of opening the temple in search of the artifact and intentionally releasing the creatures onto the city. The man clarifies that he did open the temple, but that he was unaware that the creatures, Slovars, were nesting inside. They bound him and left him to die.
Peroka hears a menacing rumble approaching, and the two Force-sensitives realize they have awoken the Slovar Queen. The member of the Brotherhood asks to join forces with the Jedi to defeat the threat and to judge him by his actions rather than prejudice. The two work together to defeat the Slovar Queen and her supporting slovars.
In the aftermath, Qui-Gon finds that the dark-sider, who reveals his name is Minakatso, actually saved Peroka at one point. In gratitude and patience, Qui-Gon decides not to pursue Minakatso at this time. The Jedi seals the temple once again and contemplates the complexities of people's actions and their affiliations.
Qui-Gon Jinn: Tomb Raider
Obi-Wan Kenobi hears fighting in the direction of the oclatars and feels pulled to support whoever is facing the creatures. Qui-Gon seems to realize that whoever is doing so does not require their assistance and, further, cannot be allowed to reach the contents of the tomb first.
Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan work together to open the lock through the Force. Within, they find a scroll, which Jinn surmises to be the artifact Dooku searched for. It is likely filled with dangerous knowledge locked away for protection. He intends to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands.
Behind them, Minakatso announces his presence and intention: To ensure that the contents of the scroll are not seen by the eyes of any Jedi. Qui-Gon and Minakatso engage in a duel. Jinn believes only the Jedi can keep the information safe, but Minakatso sees that as arrogance that prevents them from doing what is necessary. Obi-Wan joins in the battle. Minakatso pleads with the Jedi to trust him and not to fall prey to their prejudice.
The pleas get through to Qui-Gon, and he turns off his lightsaber, instructing Obi-Wan to follow suit. They allow Minakatso to take the scroll, which soon crumbles into dust in his hand, fulfilling his vow. These actions deeply confuse Padawan Kenobi. Minakatso decides to tell his story to the young man.
Minakatso is one of few remaining followers of the Brotherhood of the Ninth Door, a group which does not delineate between the light side and dark side of the force. He says how Sarasti Thel's research into the origins of the Force revealed dangerous truths that were buried with him to prevent the knowledge from being used for evil purposes. As rumors of the knowledge spread, Minkatso vowed to not rest until it was destroyed. He spent his whole life searching for the scroll and finally found it, securing the honor of his people.
After Minakatso leaves, the three archaeologists arrive at the tomb. To Qui-Gon, their bravery represents the balance of light and dark, why they do not need to try and stop Minakatso for simply aligning more with the dark side. Leaving the archaeologists to continue their work, the Jedi leave the ancient ship. They discuss the lessons they learned from this experience, which inspires Jinn to share the story of Azlin Rell on their journey back to Coruscant.
