Captain (armed forces)
Captain (civilian)
Flight captain
A naval captain, or simply captain, was a military rank used by navies throughout galactic history. The Chiss Ascendancy had three ranks for naval captains; junior captain, mid captain, and senior captain. Different types of naval captains included flag captain, who was a captain in command of an admiral's flagship, fleet captain used by the Mon Calamari, and Captain of the Line, also known as a Line Captain.
Description
Overview
A naval captain, or simply captain, was a naval military rank[5] used by multiple factions.[6] The rank was inferior to commodore[7] but superior to naval commander.[8] Naval captains served as the commanding officers from vessels as small as light cruisers[9] to warships as large as a Star Dreadnought.[3] Naval captains could also serve in the position of Fleet Commander.[4] Naval captains also had command authority over ground forces[10] and starfighter corps forces deployed from their warship.[11]
Alliance to Restore the Republic
A naval captain within the Rebel Alliance Navy.
The Rebel Alliance Navy utilized the rank of captain within their forces. Alliance naval captains were able to command warships such as EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigates,[12] CR90 corvettes,[13] Sphyrna-class Hammerhead corvettes,[14] GR-75 medium transports,[15] and could also serve as one of the commanders of an MC80A Home One Type Heavy Star Cruiser[16] that served as an admiral's flagship[17] or as the ship commander of an MC80 Liberty Type Heavy Star Cruiser.[18] Captains could also lead convoys of multiple ships.[12] For the Alliance Navy, the naval rank of captain was denoted by two blue pips vertical of each other on a square metal plaque.[14]
Chiss Ascendancy
For the Unknown Regions government known as the Chiss Ascendancy, the rank of naval captain existed as three separate ranks; Junior Captain, Mid Captain, and Senior Captain.[1] Junior Captain was superior to the Chiss rank of Senior Commander but below that of Mid Captain.[19] A Junior Captain could command Chiss Defense Force Transports,[1] serve as the executive officer of a Chiss heavy cruiser or Chiss frigate,[19] or serve as a weapons officer for a Nightdragon man-of-war.[20]
A Mid Captain was above the rank of Junior Captain, but below a Senior Captain. A Mid Captain could serve as the ship commander[1] or executive officer for a Chiss heavy cruiser. Next in the rank hierarchy, a Senior Captain was a naval captain rank inferior to that of commodore.[19] A Senior Captain had the capability of also serving as the commander of a heavy cruiser,[20] or as the executive officer of an admiral's flagship.[21]
Galactic Empire
Firmus Piett, a naval captain serving aboard the Executor. Piett was given a battlefield promotion to admiral.
In the Galactic Empire's Imperial Navy, a naval captain had the authority to command a Star Dreadnought, a Star Destroyer,[3] a cruiser, a corvette,[22] a light cruiser,[9] and other warships. Naval captains also had command authority over ground forces deployed from their warships,[10] and could personally lead a regiment of stormtroopers.[5] Naval captains also commanded the starfighter corps forces deployed from their warship.[11]
The Imperial Navy used variations of naval captains, with the branch also utilizing the naval rank of flag captain to denote a captain commanding the flagship of a fleet admiral[23] or grand admiral.[24] The Empire's navy also used junior captain as part of its rank structure.[25] The Imperial Navy utilized different rank insignia plaques to denote the naval rank, one variation using three blue tiles followed by two red tiles on their standard olive uniform,[26] and the same rank plaque could be worn on a black uniform.[27] Another version was a rank plaque of three red tiles over three blue tiles on olive[3] or black uniforms.[9]
Galactic Republic
Captain Tarkin (left) served as a fleet group commander.
Within the Republic Navy, a naval captain was able to serve as an officer of a Venator-class Star Destroyer[2] and of an Arquitens-class light cruiser.[28] Clone navigation officers with the rank of Clone Captain could also serve as the commanding officer of a Pelta-class frigate[29] as well as a Consular-class light cruiser.[30] A variation of naval captain[31]— Captain of the Line[32] or Line Captain— was used by the Galactic Republic.[31] A Republic Navy captain could also serve as a fleet group commander.[4]
In the Republic Diplomatic Fleet, Judicials were able to obtain the rank of naval captain and also command a Consular-class light cruiser[33] or a CR56 corvette.[34] The Republic rank plaque for a captain serving as a fleet commander[4] was three red tiles over two blue, which were also used to denote other ranks such as fleet admiral,[35] admiral,[36] and rear admiral.[37]
First Order & Final Order
The First Order Navy's rank structure included captains. Naval captains were able to serve as the commanding officer of the Mega-class Star Dreadnought Supremacy,[38] a Mandator IV-class Siege Dreadnought, or of a Resurgent-class Star Destroyer. Naval captains also served as part of a general's command staff aboard a Star Destroyer.[39] The Sith Eternal's Final Order also utilized naval captains in its rank hierarchy, with captains being able to command Xyston-class Star Destroyers.[40]
New Republic
A captain within the New Republic Defense Fleet.
The rank of naval captain[41] was also used by the Rebel Alliance's successor government,[18] the New Republic Defense Fleet. As such, it was also denoted by a command insignia with two blue pips on a metallic square.[41] Naval captains could serve as the commanding officer of a Republic Star Destroyer,[42] a Star Cruiser that served as a flagship,[43] an MC75 Star Cruiser,[44] a Defender-class cruiser,[41] an Acclamator-class cruiser,[45] or an EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate.[44] Captains could also serve as members of a command convened to respond to attacks,[46] or as the commander of a small fleet.[41]
Other factions
Within the naval forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, a captain had the capability of performing as the commanding officer of a Lucrehulk-class battleship,[47] a Providence-class Dreadnought,[48] as well as the commander of a blockade fleet.[47] The Trade Federation's fleet utilized naval captains, which also had the role of commanding a Lucrehulk-class battleship.[33] The monarchial government of Mon Cala also used naval captains, with fleet captains commanding the Mon Calamari Star Cruisers of the Mon Cala Mercantile Fleet.[49]
The Resistance, a private paramilitary group with ties to the Rebel Alliance and New Republic,[50] utilized naval captains in its fleet. A captain could command the Resistance flagship; the MC85 Star Cruiser Raddus, serve as part of a vice admiral's staff,[39] and additionally serve as a ground installation's flight officer.[40]

Galactic Empire
Citation
Lucasfilm Story Group executive Pablo Hidalgo confirmed that live-action productions treat rank insignia plaques of the Galactic Empire by two eras: pre–Death Star I destruction and post. The pre-destruction era utilizes the "single row" format for live-action media including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Solo: A Star Wars Story, Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi and Star Wars: Andor per Pablo Hidalgo (@pabl0hidalgo) on Twitter (post on June 4, 2022): "@peacemakervitus There's basically two eras for Imperial badges - pre-Death Star destruction and post. So Andor and Kenobi follow the Rogue One 'single row' model." (original link is obsolete). Due to this, this individual's rank insignia plaque is consistent with its respective rank insignia and branch in the live-action production chart here, and as such must be that military rank and in that branch.

Notes:
- Senior Captain will be used to refer to a captain of a capital ship, which is Captain of the Line or Line Captain in canon. Junior Captain will be used to refer to a Captain of a sub-capital ship, which in real world applications are known as Corvette Captain and Frigate Captain. On a separate note, a Gunnery Captain, in real life applications is the chief gunner of a cannon/battery, and is a petty officer rank, rather than an actual captain rank.
* will be used for individuals who are confirmed to be a rank, but not the specific rank. For example, Cassio Tagge with the standard uniform and six red tiles is a Major General. General Sotorus Ramda has an identical plaque and uniform, therefore it can be reasonable to state that Ramda is specifically a Major General as well.- Google Sheets documenting observable single instances of Imperial rank plaques in new live-action films and TV series.
- Any original trilogy rank tiles that are orange or amber will be considered to be yellow. That is the color they are supposed to represent in the correct natural lighting, such as Commander Praji. This is reinforced by Captain Edmos Khurgee in A New Hope and in the COMPNOR Recruitment poster. Another example is Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin's plaque in A New Hope being depicted with yellow tiles in all other appearances rather than amber.

Rank plaques
Notes:
- Clone trooper officers maintained the same rank plaques throughout Star Wars: The Clone Wars until the latter seasons. Clone officers utilized rank plaques with three tiles, starting at 2 red and 1 blue, no matter the rank or branch. As such, these charts will not account for rank plaques for the earlier seasons and will begin at around the end of The Clone Wars: Season Five and beginning of The Clone Wars: The Lost Missions.
- Clone trooper officers with light blue/blue uniforms will be assumed to be commissioned officers. Clone officers with gray/black will be assumed to be non-commissioned officers, similar to the black uniforms worn by Imperial non-commissioned officers.
- Republic officers in Star Wars: The Clone Wars all wear the same rank plaque, regardless if they are a captain, Rear Admiral, or Admiral. Officers use three red plaques placed above two blue plaques. This chart will use such plaques since they are consistent with flag officers as they are all admirals. The only captain that appeared in The Clone Wars was a young Wilhuff Tarkin, who was serving as Fleet Group Commander. It can be deduced that such a position warranted an identical plaque as an admiral or other flag officer.
- * will be used for individuals who are confirmed to be a rank, but not the specific rank. For example, Cassio Tagge with the standard uniform and six red tiles is a Major General. General Sotorus Ramda has an identical plaque and uniform, therefore it can be reasonable to state that Ramda is specifically a Major General as well.
