"If Governor Tarkin is going to continue to make unilateral decisions of the sort he made at Phindar, then he should be doing so on Coruscant, coordinating the efforts of the Imperial military instead of chasing his errant corvette all over the Outer Rim."
―Harus Ison to Emperor Palpatine[1]

Harus Ison was an individual who served as an intelligence chief within the Galactic Empire, serving as the Deputy Director of the Imperial Security Bureau in 14 BBY. Ison was directly involved in the Empire's response to the Berch Teller campaign. Following the campaign's conclusion, he was given a promotion and moved into the Ubiqtorate within Imperial Intelligence.

Biography

By 14 BBY,[3] Harus Ison served as an intelligence chief as the Deputy Director of the Imperial Security Bureau,[1] the internal security and law enforcement agency of the Galactic Empire's Commission for the Preservation of the New Order.[2] At this time, Ison was present in a courtroom within the Imperial Palace beside Darth Vader, and Prefect Phoca Soot in front of a cadre of criminals gathered there to discover the reason why there was a surge in criminal activity on Level 1331. Moff Wilhuff Tarkin accompanied Grand Vizier Mas Amedda as the proceedings began, and remarked that he knew of Ison, but was unaware of who Prefect Soot was. After Vader provided an ultimatum to the criminals and for them not to interfere with Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine's plans, Vader killed Prefect Soot, who was responsible for the increase in crime.[1]

Following an attack on Sentinel Base, the subsequent discovery of a communications cache on Murkhana, a former Separatist Alliance stronghold, Amedda directed the ISB to share their findings with other high level groups within the Empire, and a meeting was scheduled at the Imperial Palace between Emperor Palpatine, Ars Dangor, Sate Pestage, and Janus Greejatus of the Imperial Ruling Council, Deputy Director Ison and Colonel Wullf Yularen of the ISB, Vice Admirals Dodd Rancit and Terrinald Screed from the Naval Intelligence Agency, Amedda, Lord Vader, and Moff Tarkin. After being directed by Amedda, Ison began the briefing with the contents found on Murkhana, and answered questions from Advisor Dangor. Colonel Yularen at times took over for Ison, and there were traded comments between Ison and Screed and Rancit from Naval Intelligence regarding the importance of the cache. At the end of the briefing and conversations Tarkin provided a recommendation to the Joint Chiefs of the Imperial Military, which was taken under advisement by the Emperor, though Ison had nearly groaned earlier at Tarkin's report to the group.[1]

Palpatine, not wanting Ison and others to conduct their own investigations, order Vader and Tarkin to undertake a mission to Murkhana and recover the communications cache. In preparation for the mission, Ison was only willing to provide the code name for the ISB operative on Murkhana to Tarkin. During the mission, Tarkin's personal corvette, the Carrion Spike, was stolen from a landing field by rebels led by Berch Teller. Following the theft of the precious Imperial property, Ison and members of the ISB and Imperial Intelligence attended a meeting with the Emperor via hologram. Ison began with an apology, which Palpatine immediately refused. Ison then briefed the Emperor on the vessel's theft with Rancit, and provided information on their investigations between a possible link with the communications cache and the theft of Tarkin's vessel, as well as ways to track the stolen ship. Palpatine then ordered Rancit to have his analysts continue their calculations into tracing the ship, and ordered Ison and his assets to focus on ascertaining the intentions of their enemy.[1]

With the start of Berch Teller's rebel campaign against the Empire, another meeting on the subject was made at the Naval Intelligence Headquarters on Coruscant between members of the Ruling Council and the Joint Chiefs of the Imperial Military. These attendees included Amedda, Dangor, General Cassio Tagge, Rear Admiral Conan Antonio Motti, Rear Admiral Kendal Ozzel, Rear Admiral Tiaan Jerjerrod, Director of COMPNOR Armand Isard, Ison, Yularen, Rancit and Screed, among others. Palpatine attended the meeting via hologram, and Ison began regarding the recent attack on Galidraan Station, stating that it was an isolated star system and that it was an attack on an unimportant outpost. Ison dismissed the notion that the rebels were on a campaign, and that the attack on Galidraan Station was likely to evade capture by Tarkin and Vader. Ison also downplayed the danger of the Carrion Spike agreeing with Rear Admiral Motti that it was only one ship, and that the Imperial Navy should not need to relocate entire assets. Amedda and Rancit countered that the danger posed by the single ship was that it posed a danger to Palpatine's unchallengeable reign, and so it must be destroyed. The meeting was then interrupted by the attack on Lucazec, where the Carrion Spike transmitted the attack on the Imperial HoloNet frequency, which answered Ison's previous questions on where the holofeed was being transmitted from.[1]

Personality and traits

Harus Ison had white hair and was a muscular individual with a flushed face and a square jaw. Ison was thought of by Tarkin as being an old-guard loyalist.[1]
