"What I did find though, were tons of white worm larvae in the thick Ylesian mud. Worms ain't usually my thing, but I knew that the Hutts ate 'em by the handful, so I took a deep breath and popped a few grubs into my mouth."
―Strono Tuggs, The Ultimate Cookbook[1]

Ylesian White Worms were a type of worm from the planet Ylesia, where their larval stage could be found in mud. Members of the Hutt species ate the worms, and during a culinary tour of the galaxy between 34 ABY and 35 ABY, the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs tried some and found them delicious. He then included a recipe using the worms in his third cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook.

Description

"They were a little chewy, a little spicy, and surprisingly delightful. Would never have expected it, but I'll be addin' these squirmin' sensations into my regular rotation, even beyond the borders of Hutt Space."
―Strono Tuggs, The Ultimate Cookbook[1]

Ylesian White Worms were a type of worm found on the Hutt Space planet Ylesia. The white-colored worms had a larval stage that could be found in the mud of their homeworld.[1]

History

"As a chef, I have to be willin' to try just about any food, no matter how strange it may seem. There's always a chance that somethin' completely outside of my comfort zone could become everyone's new favorite snack. That's what happened when I visited Ylesia."
―Strono Tuggs talks about trying Ylesian White Worms, The Ultimate Cookbook[1]

Ylesian White Worms were a popular food for the Hutt species, who ate them in large quantities,[1] with white worm larvae being one of the favourite snacks of the Hutt gangsters of the Outer Rim Territories.[2] While on a culinary tour of the galaxy[1] between 34 ABY and 35 ABY,[3] the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs agreed to take a tour of Hutt Space in his food freighter after an influential Hutt fell in love with his Klatooine Crêpes recipe. Not having to fear for his safety in the dangerous region and being given access to many strange ingredients on the Hutt worlds, Tuggs visited Ylesia in hopes of acquiring chops of meat from the reeks found there, but had a difficult time locating any of the creatures.[1]

Having instead come across a large number of Ylesian White Worms in the thick mud, Tuggs took a deep breath and then ate several, having heard of the Hutts' love for them. Although worms were not usually something he enjoyed, the Artiodac found the grubs to be a little chewy, a little spicy, and surprisingly delightful. Pleasantly surprised, he added the worms to his regular menu rotation and included a recipe using them in his third cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook,[1] in 35 ABY.[3] He also included Ylesian White Worms as one of several popular snacks from around the galaxy in the Chandrilan Cheese Board recipe in the book.[3]

Ylesian white worms as depicted in Legends

In the current Star Wars canon, Ylesian White Worms were mentioned in the 2023 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook, a recipe book written by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak with photography by Ted Thomas. The out-of-universe recipe for the dish using the worms makes use of multi-colored, extra virgin olive oil, peeled and roughly chopped cloves of garlic, fresh chopped basil, oregano, parsley, dried red pepper flakes, sweet smoked paprika, lemon pepper, kosher salt, and fresh balls of drained mozzarella.[1]

The worms originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they first appeared in the 1997 novel The Paradise Snare, the first story in The Han Solo Trilogy, written by A. C. Crispin. They were not named in the book,[4] but were then identified and pictured in the 1998 reference book The Essential Guide to Planets and Moons, written by Daniel Wallace and illustrated by Brandon McKinney and Scott Kolins.[5]

  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook establishes that the publishing of the in-universe The Ultimate Cookbook and the culinary tour that preceded it occurred following the publishing of The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook and prior to the destruction of Kijimi. It also establishes that The Ultimate Cookbook was published following the Festival of the Ancestors that occurred during that time period. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook further establishes that The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook was published concurrently with the First Order's search for the Resistance base on Batuu, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 34 ABY. In addition, Timelines dates the Festival of the Ancestors and the destruction of Kijimi to 35 ABY, meaning the tour must have taken place between 34 ABY and 35 ABY and The Ultimate Cookbook must have been published in 35 ABY.
