"When you're a smuggler on the run, you gotta get your hands on food that's easy to run with. Maybe that's why this little folded phenomenon is all the rage on the streets of Byblos. It's practically a full meal—eggs, meat, grains, and veg—all packed into the perfect portable parcel. This is one tantalizin' treat you're gonna wanna smuggle with you to every world you visit."
―Strono Tuggs, The Ultimate Cookbook[1]

Byblos Squares were a convenient food item available on the Colonies planet Byblos, located along the Corellian Run hyperlane. The squares consisted of a purple vegetable wrap filled with blue Kerkoidia Grains, green Pickled Paddy Flowers, red meat, and yellow eggs. They were assembled by placing the four individual fillings on separate quarters of the wrap, which itself would be slit halfway down the middle from one side. The wrap would then be folded over itself three times, covering all the fillings.[1]

Upon completing a tour of the galaxy and its many food cultures [1] between 34 ABY and 35 ABY,[2], Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs included a recipe for Byblos Squares in The Ultimate Cookbook, his third cookbook, published[1] in 35 ABY.[2] Tuggs believed the popularity of the squares on Byblos was likely due to their convenient nature, making them perfect smugglers on the run who needed a quick meal.[1]

Behind the scenes

Byblos Squares were created as a recipe for the 2023 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook, a recipe book written by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak. The out-of-universe recipe for the wrap requires luncheon meat, tamari, granulated sugar, eggs, sesame oil, white pepper, and nori sheets, as well as two other recipes—Kerkoidia Grains and Pickled Paddy Flowers—included in the book.[1]

  2. 2.0 2.1 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook establishes that the publishing of the in-universe The Ultimate Cookbook and the culinary tour that preceded it occurred following the publishing of The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook and prior to the destruction of Kijimi. It also establishes that The Ultimate Cookbook was published following the Festival of the Ancestors that occurred during that time period. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook further establishes that The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook was published concurrently with the First Order's search for the Resistance base on Batuu, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 34 ABY. In addition, Timelines dates the Festival of the Ancestors and the destruction of Kijimi to 35 ABY, meaning the tour must have taken place between 34 ABY and 35 ABY and The Ultimate Cookbook must have been published in 35 ABY.
