"While I was on Sarkhai, I dug up some root veg that was just the right consistency to slice and fry into these beautifully crispy chips. To add a bit of extra Sarkhai flare, I decided to sprinkle on some seasonin' made from dried algae. If you ask me, these little guys kinda look like they've got on face paint of their own now."
―Strono Tuggs, The Ultimate Cookbook[1]

Sarkhai Crisps were a type of vegetarian, yellow chip made of sliced and fried root vegetable with a sprinkle of brown garnish and short ribbons of dried algae seasoning. The dish was created by the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs during a culinary tour of the galaxy that he took[1] between 34 ABY and 35 ABY.[2] Tuggs harvested root vegetables with just the right consistency to use while on Sarkhai, the Mid Rim homeworld of the Sarkhai species, and added the algae for a little bit of extra Sarkahi flare, believing that they made the crisps look like they were decorated with the face paints that the Sarkhai wore to scare of predators.[1]

Tuggs then included the recipe for the dish in his third cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook, which was published[1] in 35 ABY.[2] In the book, he called the chips beautifully crispy and tasty enough that their "war paint" would scare off no one.[1]

Behind the scenes

Sarkhai Crisps were created as a recipe for the 2023 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook, a recipe book written by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak with photography by Ted Thomas. The out-of-universe recipe for the chips makes use of peeled russet potatoes, vegetable oil, kosher salt, ichi-mi tōgarashi, and nori.[1]

  2. 2.0 2.1 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook establishes that the publishing of the in-universe The Ultimate Cookbook and the culinary tour that preceded it occurred following the publishing of The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook and prior to the destruction of Kijimi. It also establishes that The Ultimate Cookbook was published following the Festival of the Ancestors that occurred during that time period. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook further establishes that The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook was published concurrently with the First Order's search for the Resistance base on Batuu, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 34 ABY. In addition, Timelines dates the Festival of the Ancestors and the destruction of Kijimi to 35 ABY, meaning the tour must have taken place between 34 ABY and 35 ABY and The Ultimate Cookbook must have been published in 35 ABY.
