- "Still, that didn't stop me from riskin' a quick pit stop on Li-Toran to pick up a special ingredient—a sweet, sticky sap harvested from an organic 'bleedin' rock' found on the planet's surface. Melittos can't get enough of the stuff (though I'm not really sure how they consume it, seein' that those weird bug faces of theirs don't seem to have any mouths on 'em)."
- ―Strono Tuggs, The Ultimate Cookbook
Bleeding-rock sap was the sweet and sticky crimson sap of the bleeding rock organism native to the planet Li-Toran. It was the primary element of the liquid diet of the insectoid Melitto species that also lived there,[1] who harvested the sap on the world's surface.[2] Melittos who left Li-Toran used special survival devices that made sweet-smelling liquids that simulated the sap by distilling local foodstuff.[1]
During the culinary tour of the galaxy that he took[2] between 34 ABY and 35 ABY,[3] the Artiodac chef Strono Tuggs visited Li-Toran to collect some of the sap, requiring him to wear environmental gear due to the world's noxious atmosphere. Tuggs then used the sap to sweeten individual cornbreads to create Melitto Sap Cakes, a vegetarian cake that he included the recipe for in his third cookbook, The Ultimate Cookbook, which was published[2] in 35 ABY.[3] In the book, he professed to not understanding how Melittos consumed the sap as they had no visible mouths.[2]
Behind the scenes
Bleeding-rock sap was first mentioned in Cyphers and Masks, a 2018 supplement for the Star Wars: Age of Rebellion roleplaying game published by Fantasy Flight Games.[1] The 2023 recipe book Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook, which was written by Jenn Fujikawa and Marc Sumerak, uses honey to represent the sap in an out-of-universe recipe.[2]

- ↑ 3.0 3.1 Star Wars: The Ultimate Cookbook establishes that the publishing of the in-universe The Ultimate Cookbook and the culinary tour that preceded it occurred following the publishing of The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook and prior to the destruction of Kijimi. It also establishes that The Ultimate Cookbook was published following the Festival of the Ancestors that occurred during that time period. Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook further establishes that The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook was published concurrently with the First Order's search for the Resistance base on Batuu, which Star Wars: Timelines dates to 34 ABY. In addition, Timelines dates the Festival of the Ancestors and the destruction of Kijimi to 35 ABY, meaning the tour must have taken place between 34 ABY and 35 ABY and The Ultimate Cookbook must have been published in 35 ABY.
