Creators

These are real people have worked on Star Wars and are any of the following: they have publicly come out as LGBTQIA+, posthumously been acknowledged as LGBTQIA+, and/or have publicly shared that their pronouns are something other than those associated with their gender assigned at birth. Please correct or let us know if any information is incorrect or out-of-date!

Along with the out-of-universe (OOU) articles for these people, we look out for in-universe (IU) articles associated with them, primarily their inclusion in the "Behind the scenes" section.

Canon

Ongoing spoiler warning for recent canon content!

Visions:

These characters aren't included in one of the categories because they're only unconfirmed subtext, authors' ideas that didn't manifest canonically, or otherwise not clearly LGBTQIA+—but we still care about them as maybe or almost LGBTQIA+—so see the notes for why certain characters are in our project scope, but not in the IU categories.

Legends

As with canon, these are characters who are in our scope, but not in the categories.

Aliens of interest

These aliens are explicitly not cisgender male or female, but due to their distinctly non-human biology and/or culture, it's debatable if they should be regarded as LGBTQIA+ rep—still, they're of interest to this project.

Key:
∅ genderless being

Legends

A Legends character sometimes listed off-site as a "first" has been intentionally omitted from the categories and listing.[47]

  • Focus on topics that are relevant due to being closely tied with LGBTQIA+ in-universe character(s).
  • Are created/portrayed by someone LGBTQIA+.
  • Are a piece of OOU media that features LGBTQIA+ characters in content or via a Pride variant cover.

  2. Aytar is male and his lover, Kantam Sy, is non-binary. Following the example of Hareck, we believe he fits without labeling his specific sexuality.
  3. The High Republic: Path of Deceit establishes about Kessarine: "Two of these five will likely mature into egg bearers—girls. That is the usual percentage. The Galactic Basic is clumsy for Kessarine, but we do not think of ourselves as girls or boys." of which Ferize is in a poly relationship with her two partners. Follows the theme of several Path of Deceit non-human characters, though no specific label is applied.
  4. Per creator inspired by, droid with she/they pronouns used interchangeably. Groves has indicated that the droid was not intended to have gender programming.
  5. 5.0 5.1 Ahsoka Tano/Barriss Offee acknowledged and headcanon'd by "Weapons Factory" director Giancarlo Volpe: "I can't believe someone ships Barrissokka. You have no idea how hard I secretly pushed this agenda in "Droid Factory" "Weapons Factory" (thank you for pointing out my mistake - I have worked on a lot of shows, I some times get the titles confused.)"
  6. When asked about whether Ailee's usage of both "she/her" and "they/them" pronouns in Cataclysm meant she was intended to be non-binary, Ailee's creator Lydia Kang stated that she had not put much thought to it due to the character's minor role. The author also indicated that she thinks she may have vaguely had the character in mind to be non-binary, but ultimately could not remember clearly.
  7. 7.0 7.1 Subtext between Garazeb Orrelios and Alexsandr Kallus (especially in finale) acknowledged but unconfirmed by Dave Filoni; meanwhile, Zeb's voice actor Steve Blum said of it, "I got my man in the end. That was the greatest gift you've ever given me. We get our own show now, right? The Kallus and Zeb Adventures!" Star Wars Twitter later used "Kalluzeb" in a post
  8. Unconfirmed subtext in "A Closed Fist Has No Claws"
  9. The High Republic: A Test of Courage defines that at least two uncles of Avon Sunvale rescued her from kidnappers. It's not given further context as to whether the uncles are Starros Clan siblings or romantically involved, or if the uncles referenced were more than two individuals.
  10. Axel Greylark refers to women and men as "darling," and the genders of his prior marriage engagements aren't specified, but other specified relationships and flirtations are with women.
  11. 11.0 11.1 In regards to Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus, Kristin Baver [1] "one of my favorite ships, and I'm not talking about the flying kind".
  12. In scripts, Daniel José Older created Bibs using "he/him" pronouns and established the character's gender as male. Subsequent sources have followed suit, save for Star Wars: The High Republic: Chronicles of the Jedi, which uses "they/them" pronouns for Bibs. Older had been unaware of the differences, but when asked, felt that "he/they" pronouns would be the best way to refer to the character.

  14. In The High Republic Adventures (2022) 5 the way Dexter describes his relationship with Maz Kanata is consistent with queerplatonic relationships, leading to recurring, speculation, that he's ace or demi. — See sources:
  15. 15.0 15.1 Uses they/them pronouns, but not confirmed genderfluid or non-binary. Also voiced by a non-binary voice actor.
  16. 16.0 16.1 Post liked by author, but otherwise not confirmed. See Good article nomination comments about category reasoning.
  17. 17.0 17.1 Either the writers on Star Wars: The Bad Batch didn't realize the implications of how they wrote Omega and Emerie Karr or they knew exactly what they were doing and just haven't acknowledged it.
  18. Uses he/him and they/them pronouns, unspecified gender programming.
  19. 19.0 19.1 Among other interviews, Oscar Isaac himself said of Finn and Poe Dameron: "I think there could've been a very interesting, forward-thinking—not even forward-thinking, just, like, current-thinking—love story there, something that hadn't quite been explored yet; particularly the dynamic between these two men in war that could've fallen in love with each other. I would try to push it a bit in that direction, but the Disney overlords were not ready to do that."
  20. How platonic/just-military-stuff was Fra Raida's shower with Yrica Quell? How accurate is Yrica's gaydar?
  21. 21.0 21.1 Hachi is married to her wife; though Hachi's gender was never confirmed, she uses she/her pronouns.
  22. Similar to the Twi'lek male server with headcones, Durand is depicted with horns, which Star Wars Rebels: The Visual Guide specifies that only males have, meaning that she may be trans, though it hasn't been addressed in lore.
  23. Premium-Era-real 'The Acolyte' Just Got Even More Queer: Dafne Keen Confirms Jecki Lon is Crushing on Amandla Stenberg's Osha by Meghan O'Keefe on Decider (June 19, 2024) (backup link archived on June 19, 2024) — Actor has stated that, in her mind, she imagines the character has a crush on Verosha Aniseya.
  24. Both Tonra and Sabé flirt with Guvar, though she only reciprocates the former. She indicates that she liked the way Tonra flirted with her and later, Sabé later mentions the journalist's attachment to Tonra being strong. E. K. Johnston specified on Twitter that the interactions with both Tonra and Sabé were intended to portray the aforementioned pair as not straight, leaving open the possibility of Guvar being interested in Sabé in return, though not confirmed due to the moment being brief.
  25. Implied in Last Shot when L3-37 asks Lando why he presumes she'd be interested in a "handsome boy droid." Lesbian and/or asexual droid?
  26. Author asked whether the pair had been intended to be brothers or a couple. He stated he had not thought about it before/when writing, but indicated it would make sense if they were a couple.
  27. TwitterLogo Alexander Freed (@AlexanderMFreed) on Twitter (post on July 18, 2019): "I wouldn't say for sure. I don't like to interpret my own work (I prefer to leave it up to readers) but it's totally reasonable to assume Nette and Quell were romantically involved. Whether Nette was Quell's FIRST girlfriend? I don't think there's enough evidence to say." (backup link) (screenshot) (In response to: "@AlexanderMFreed are nette and the mysterious "quell's first girlfriend" the same person ooooor?? im getting a vibe :P") This was re: Alphabet Squadron, but Shadow Fall pushed it further...
  28. As detailed, Johnston indicated she thought about putting Sabé and Padmé in a relationship but ultimately decided not to, instead regarding it as a "platonic soulmate situation." Other author comments also point toward the trilogy's affinity between the pair being a friendship to contrast Padmé's romance with Anakin. Queen's Peril subtext provides room for a sapphic interpretation in scenes depicting Padmé's jealousy toward Sabé as her handmaiden interacts with Harli Jafan. Queen's Hope depicts Sabé and Padmé's closeness, but indicates the latter had never fallen in love prior.
  29. Given their voice and their partner's appearance, these two can easily be read as a WLW couple. Previously included in the LGBT category before Wookieepedia's standards for listing gender changed.
  30. YouTube Interview with Gavin Hignight — Writer on "Star Wars Resistance" on the Friends of the Force YouTube channel (August 28, 2022) (backup link)
  31. 31.0 31.1 As revealed in a StarWars.com post, Wren and Hati's actors used "Shabine" as a moniker to coin their characters' connection in Ahsoka, having had the term made into a friendship bracelet. The article establishes that both appreciate the fans' headcanon name for the pair of "WolfWren" and also acknowledge the fan response regarding the intensity of the magnetic interactions between Wren and Hati as sort of a "yin and yang." Added to a Star Wars Twitter post.
  32. See note for Yrica Quell's boyfriend being included in scope, per his brief relationship with Svi'no Atchapat before it turned sour and they'd broken up.
  33. Queen's Shadow subtext
  34. 34.0 34.1 A patron (he/him) has no specified gender under Wook's rules of separating gender and pronouns fully. Meanwhile, the patron's husband is male but has no specified pronouns. Author said she'd look into it, but unconfirmable for the category during the SA process due to lack of confirmed gender.
  35. This male Twi'lek with headcones immediately spawned speculation that he's a trans man (or the costume department messed up).
  36. This Twi'lek is referred to by both singular "they/them" and "she/her" pronouns in prose, which also specifies either "she/her" or "he/him" pronouns for each of the other characters among their group of Nihil.
  37. In headcanons by E. K. Johnston that didn't make it into her writing, Versé is a trans woman, per this and other tweets, later touched on further in an interview for reasons it was omitted.
  38. Yoshi was of Aphra's lovers, but no pronouns were used—presumably female since Aphra is lesbian, but Yoshi is possibly non-binary or another gender.
  39. To paraphrase NBDani, Yrica Quell's past relationship with her boyfriend is still a relationship involving at least one bi character (Yrica herself); while it appears heteronormative on the outside, that appearance doesn't remove from Yrica's bi-ness. Thus, her ex-boyfriend is part of our scope as an aspect of her portrayal as bi.
  40. Similar to "Ember" and others; uses they/them pronouns, but not confirmed Genderfluid or NB.
  41. 41.00 41.01 41.02 41.03 41.04 41.05 41.06 41.07 41.08 41.09 41.10 41.11 41.12 In Star Wars: The Old Republic, player characters of any gender can flirt with this character, but the character does not reciprocate interest at the time.
  42. In Star Wars: The Old Republic, only female player characters can flirt with the character Kareena, but the character does not reciprocate interest at the time.
  43. 43.0 43.1 An author shared with us his observations that in the 1997 novel Planet of Twilight, Nataasi Daala describes Tol Getelles with a string of insults that includes "catamite," a term that refers to a bottom or receptive partner in a male/male sexual relationship, and often specifically the younger of the two men. (Wookieepedia previously missed that implication and redlinked the term in appearances as a "creature".) He is closely associated with Larm in other characters' descriptions; Daala says of him that Geteles "has his sycophant Larm on a leash." While Barbara Hambly's precise authorial intent is uncertain, it's possible that this was deliberate queer coding of Getelles and Larm as a couple.
  44. Considered female in Star Wars: The Clone Wars appearances, but male in pre-TCW sources. While Dave Filoni's intent was to override preexisting sources on Tills' gender, the result is that Tills seems to be transmasc.
  45. 45.0 45.1 From the 1997 roleplaying game supplement The Black Sands of Socorro: Pret Swain inherited the Caelli-Merced Syndicate "from his uncles, Vance Caelli and Rondale Merced." Multiple times after, they continue to be paired as "his uncles." Vance and Rondale's precise relationship to Pret and to each other isn't described. While they could be brothers-in-law, they might be married or romantic partners. An author shared with us that the latter is the sort of subtext he would expect from the scenario writer, Patricia A. Jackson.
  46. To quote The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, "Shild's sexual preferences did not extend to human females." Whether or not this means he was interested in alien females or wasn't interested in any females, we don't know for sure, but it sure sounds like human female Bria Tharen was his beard. Author intent can't be confirmed (unless someone locates an old interview) since his author, A. C. Crispin, has passed away.
  47. Reess Kairn is not a portrayal of a transgender character; instead, his storyline contains multiple transphobic tropes. He is a murderer who gets reconstructive surgery as a disguise, not to affirm gender identity, making his apparent species and gender presentation match those of his victims while also having delusions that it honors them. Kairn then pretends to be a priestess (like several of those victims) while trying to evade bounty hunters like Aurra Sing. Kairn's article and the surgery article formerly contained speculation that a name first mentioned in Coruscant Nights I: Jedi Twilight applied to Kairn's surgery, and that novel likewise depicted a transphobic trope.
