- ―Marda Ro, to the Path of the Open Hand's leader, the Mother
Grandfer was a title held by Aurin, an Umbaran who resided on the Outer Rim planet Dalna during the High Republic Era.[2] In 382 BBY,[3] Aurin welcomed their friend—Path of the Open Hand member Marda Ro—in a market within Dalna's Ferdan village.[2] However, when Ro visited the grandfer following the Path's involvement in the Battle of Jedha[1] later that year,[3] they acted cold and wary toward her.[1]
Behind the scenes
The title of grandfer first appeared in the 2022 young-adult novel The High Republic: Path of Deceit, written by Justina Ireland and Tessa Gratton as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[2] Phase II.[4] Within the novel, the title first debuted in a chapter written by Gratton.[5] Gratton confirmed its intent to be used as a title for Aurin on Twitter.[6]

Tessa Gratton (@tessagratton) on Twitter (post on May 8, 2023): "A title!" (screenshot) (In response to: "Hi! I've noticed a non-binary character named Aurin is identified as 'Grandfer' in Path of Deceit. Is it their name? Or is it a title like 'grandparent'? It seems a British dialect word for 'grandfather', and Aurin is pretty old. But Idk if it's just coincidence")
