Plot summary

Preparing for the race

Nash Durango and RJ-83 were working on a sailing skiff called the Crimson Bolt which she hoped to win the Kublop Classic with this year. Her enthusiasm was shared by Lys Solay, who was excited to race with other kids across the rivers of Kublop Springs. Durango described this as one of her favorite traditions. Kai Brightstar, who had been working on the crow's nest, described Durango as the best pilot he knew. Nubs danced with excitement but fell off the deck onto the dock.

He landed near Jedi Master Zia Zaldor Zanna, who waved to the younglings. Master Zanna complimented their workmanship. Brightstar says that Durango had designed the skiff while he and his fellow younglings had helped to build it. Durango thanked Master Zia for lending her younglings for the day since she had never had a team to sail with in the Classic before. At Durango's command, Nubs released the sail but it fell off into the river. Nubs used the Force in attempt to lift the sail back into position but struggled until Brightstar lent his powers.

The group were joined by Raena Zess, whom Durango shared a rivalry with. Solay recalled that Durango had mentioned that Zess had beat her in the race every year prior. Zess flaunted her brand new sailing skiff, which her uncle had purchased for her. The skiff was manned by several racing droids. Durango was not intimidated and responded that she would win with the help of her Jedi crew. After Zess left, Master Zanna reminded Durango and the Jedi Initiates that Jedi used their power to help others and not win races.

Brightstar and Zanna agreed that it would be unfair for the Jedi younglings to use their Force powers to gain an advantage during the race. Zanna reassured the group that the five of them working together would be more than enough to win. She described Durango as a very talented pilot. Brightstar reassured her that they would stick by her and do everything to help her win.

The Kublop Classic

The racing organizer Hap told the contestants to take up position. Durango assigned her crew their jobs; Brightstar was placed in charge of the engines and the brakes, Nubs was tasked with manning the sail, Solay is tasked with looking out with obstacles on the crow's nest, and RJ-83 served as co-pilot. Durango waved to her mothers in the crowd but her view was soon blocked by Zess, who taunted her. RJ-83 and one of Zess' droids traded insults in Binary until Durango intervened.

At Hap's signal, the skiffs streamed into the rivers. Under Durango's direction, Brightstar accelerated the engines while Nubs turned the sail. The skiffs avoided a sharp turn but a skiff operated by a Mirialan boy collided with a tree, knocking it out of action. Brightstar complimented Nubs on his work with the sails. As the race continued, Zess' ship fired off steam, which blinded the other competitors. A skiff piloted by several dark-skinned human girls was caught between two rocks.

Durango grumbled that Zess was cheating. She took a short-cut and flew overland briefly before re-entering the river. They followed Zess and her skiff down a waterfall. Unwilling to lose to Durango and her Jedi friends, Zess activated her skiff's illegal turbo-boosters. Solay spotted a waterfall, but Durango reassured her that the Crimson Bolt was prepared for that. She told her crew to, at her signal, have Nubs prepare the sails, Kai give them some speed, and for RJ to open up the flaps.

Putting aside differences

Working together, they descended down the waterfall, running neck and neck with Zess. Zess however boosted her skiff's engines and charged ahead. As they approached the bottom of the waterfall, Durango had Nubs unlock the sail. However, the momentum of their descent proved too much for the Crimson Bolt, and it crashed on the muddy riverbanks. Zess also crashed her skiff on the mud. After landing, Durango blamed Zess for distracting her but realized that Zess had also gotten stuck.

Durango was still determined to win the race and joined her crew in trying to push their skiff out of the mud. However, the ship was too heavy. Durango asked her Jedi friends if they could use their Force powers. Brightstar however remembered Master Zia's warning not to use the Force for cheating. He said they would figure something else out. Durango confided that she was anxious about Zess always winning and bragging that she was the best racer in town. Durango began to doubt her abilities, but Brightstar reassured her that they had survived a waterfall in a skiff that she designed. He told her that she was the best pilot in the Outer Rim Territories, not because of the Force but because of her own piloting skills. RJ-83 and the younglings gave her a hug.

Meanwhile, a frustrated Zess lorded over her droids as they tried to free their skiff from the mud. Durango approached Zess, offering to work together to free their skiffs. Zess asked if her Jedi friends could use their Force powers. Nubs and Brightstar countered that would be cheating. Zess realized that the Jedi younglings had not been using their Force powers. She told Durango that she had decided to cheat because she'd thought that Durango's team were cheating and admitted that she was wrong. Extending an olive branch to Zess, Durango offered to connect Zess' ship to the Fire Bolt's tow cable while working together to free both their skiffs.

Zess accepted their offer of help. Brightstar connected the Firebolt's tow cable to the front of Zess' skiff. Working together, the two teams freed their skiffs from the muddy banks and drug them into the river. Continuing the race, Zess proposed that the first skiff to get through the geyser field would be the winner. Durango accepted her challenge but warned her not to cheat. The two skiffs then sped through the geyser field, which was the last leg of the race.

Winning the race

Zess managed to pull ahead, but Durango was still determined to win the race. She told Solay to find a geyser that was ready to blow. Solay spotted a big one and sailed the ship there despite Brightstar's misgivings. The geyser threw the skiff into the air. After flying over Zess' skiff, they landed back in the water and reached the finish line, winning the race. Hap announced that Team Crimson Bolt had won. Durango and her friends were jubilant. Zess hid her feelings but smiled and shook hands with Durango. Durango told her that she was a great racer when she was not cheating. Zess vowed to beat her next time but not to use any tricks.

Hap awarded Team Fire Bolt a trophy. Durango's parents were also present and congratulated their daughter. Master Zanna praised Brightstar, Solay and Nubs for playing fairly and having good sportsmanship. The Jedi younglings cheered for Durango and lifted her up.
