- "Then we're not here in the middle of the galaxy's worst ice cream shop prayin' every day that the Empire doesn't swoop down on us from above? 'Cause the Jedi got rid of all of the evil in the galaxy. Isn't that right?"
- ―Reyé Hollis, to Luke Skywalker
Reyé Hollis was a Naboo human and a sergeant in the Rebel Alliance Special Forces. The man from Naboo was one of the rebels who participated in constructing Echo Base. Despite his doubts about the Jedi Order, he soon bonded with the Jedi Luke Skywalker.
Biography
Reyé Hollis was a Naboo human male who was a sergeant in the special forces of the Alliance to Restore the Republic.[1] In 3 ABY,[2] he participated in the construction of Echo Base in the southern Clabburn Range on the ice planet Hoth. The harsh conditions were such that Hollis thought the planet was not "hothpitable" and would only appeal to someone on the run, like the Alliance was. He bonded quickly with other Alliance members stationed on Hoth.[1]
Shortly after meeting the newly arrived Jedi Luke Skywalker, Hollis and Skywalker were trapped together when a giant fork-nosed ice worm broke through the ground, causing an ice cave-in. Although he initially bickered with the Jedi, he soon trusted him. They worked together to dig their way out of the tunnel.[1]
Personality and traits
Hollis had a dark beard and skin that was darker than his beard, curly hair, and dark eyes with thick eyelashes. He was skeptical of Jedi usefulness, their powers, and the Force after hearing stories about how the Jedi Order failed to prevent the rise of the Galactic Empire. He often drew comparisons in his speech and thoughts, such as saying Hoth was the galaxy's worst ice cream shop and thinking that Skywalker's blue eyes were like Hoth's sky on a clear day.[1]
Equipment
To cope with the environment of Hoth, Hollis wore a white water-resistant pants and a fur-trimmed parka of the same material, along with gloves, black combat boots, and a helmet with goggles.[1]
Behind the scenes
In the Star Wars canon continuity, Reyé Hollis first appeared in the 2022 short story "Luke on the Bright Side" by Sam Maggs, published in the anthology Stories of Jedi and Sith;[1] however, Maggs intended him to be a character that she said was mentioned[3] in the 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.[4] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, one of the extras in The Empire Strikes Back was identified as Reyé Hollis, receiving the last name "Hollis" in the 1998 Star Wars Customizable Card Game set Special Edition Limited[5] and first name "Reyé" in the Star Wars Insider 74 article "Who's Who in Echo Base" by Josh Radke,[6] which was published on February 26, 2004.[7]

Sam Maggs (@SamMaggs) on Twitter (post on June 8, 2022): "Great question! Reyé Hollis is the same Hollis who is named in the film. The character shown in the photo you attached here is often mistakenly identified as Hollis but is actually likely the character Trey Callum!" … "Since this is Trey and we never actually see Hollis's face in the film, I took my own liberties with what his character looks like when writing the short story! (I also couldn't resist messing with and straightening out a little bit of confusing lore, as a research-lover)" (backup link)
