The American[3] editor[4] Sage Groves was born on November 9, 2001.[1] Groves worked on Escape from Valo, a junior novel written by Daniel José Older and Alyssa Wong[7] as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's Phase III that was published on January 30, 2024.[8] For the project,[3] they[2] were the authors' literary assistant[3] and editor, considering the novel one of the highlights of their year in 2023.[4] Upon the book's publication, Groves was mentioned in the acknowledgments and thanked for their assistance with the project, though was left uncredited for the role of editor.[7] On May 23, 2024,[9] Groves attended the press premiere of the Disney+ live-action television series Star Wars: The Acolyte alongside Wong and Older,[10] having been brought to the event by the latter.[11] Alongside being listed in the acknowledgements of Escape from Valo, they considered the premiere one of their Star Wars-related highlights for 2024.[10]

The droid 5A-G3 was based on Groves,[4][12] having been developed for Older's 2023 comic-book series Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures, which was part of The High Republic's Phase III.[13] 5A-G3's name is a leet speak on the editor's name.[14] Groves confirmed the droid's pronouns as "she/they,"[12] intended to be used interchangeably,[12] which matched those used by themselves at the time of the droid's debut.[3] The editor was congratulated on the droid's debut by[15] the series' artist[13] Harvey Tolibao after[15] they expressed elation at their character's debut[15] in the comic's first issue, which was released by Dark Horse Comics on December 6, 2023.[13]
Tolibao created 5A-G3's design, basing her off of an espresso coffee bean grinder. Groves spoke to him about the design, finding the artist's inspiration for the droid's depiction amusing, as he had not known they had been working as a barista when they first began speaking with Older.[5] Upon 5A-G3's debut, the editor showcased a copy of the issue featuring the custom artwork of the droid doodled on a plastic cover holding a copy of the first issue of The High Republic Adventures.[12] Groves has also noted their hope for 5A-G3 to make future appearances in Star Wars media.[16]
