Battles that Changed the Galaxy is divided into four sections: "Battle of the Republic," "Sparks of Rebellion," the "Galactic Civil War" and the "First Order-Resistance War." The book uses the Imperial calendar (BFE/AFE) system instead of the 'ABY-BBY' dating system.

"Battles of the Republic" covers the Invasion of Naboo and the Clone Wars. Notable Clone Wars battles covered in the book include the First Battle of Geonosis, the Battle of Christophsis, Battle of Teth, Battle of Ryloth, the Malevolence Campaign, Defense of Rishi Station, Battle of Quell, Battle of Malastare, Battle of Kamino, the Battle of Lola Sayu, the Battle of Mon Cala, the Battle of Umbara, the Massacre of the Nightsisters, the Onderonian Civil War, the Mandalorian Civil War, Battle of Coruscant, Battle of Kashyyyk, Battle of Utapau, the Jedi Purge and the various Outer Rim Sieges. The section also includes chapters on the importance of strategic worlds, resources military production and hyperspace lanes in conflicts. The section also compares the military forces and leadership of the Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems. While the latter relied primarily on battle droids, the Republic relied on Clone troopers before transitioning towards conscripts and Imperial Academy recruits.

"Sparks of Rebellion" focuses on the various insurgencies against the Galactic Empire, the successor to the Republic, between 9 AFE and 19 AFE. Notable battles and campaigns covered in this section include the Mimban Campaign, Darth Vader's attack on the Phoenix Cell, the Battle of Atollon, the Liberation of Lothal, the Wobani Extraction, the Battle on Jedha, Destruction of Jedha City and the Mission to Eadu. The section also profiles several key Imperial and rebel commanders including Grand Admiral Thrawn, Director Orson Krennic, Generals Cham Syndulla, Hera Syndulla and Jan Dodonna, and Captain Cassian Jeron Andor. There are also chapters on the role of hyperspace in warfare and propaganda.

The third section covers the events of the Galactic Civil War. The section also includes chapters on espionage, the Rebel Alliance's starfighter doctrine and the Imperial remnants that emerged following the Galactic Concordance.

The fourth section covers the events of the First Order-Resistance War. Notable battles and campaigns included the Attack on Tuanul, Battle of Takodana, Battle of Starkiller Base, Battle of Castilon, Battle of D'Qar, Battle of Oetchi, Battle of Crait, Battle of Barabesh, and the Battle of Exegol. The section also includes chapters on Neo-Imperialism, the New Republic's disarmament policy and the military uniforms of the Galactic Empire, Rebel Alliance, First Order and Resistance.
